The instructors were impressed.
Team Seven, Kai's team, had not only returned with the required Spirit Bloom petals, but handled a Mossback Boar without triggering emergency tokens.
Instructor Lena read the report twice.
"Excellent coordination," she said. "Especially de-escalation. Remember, true tamers don't seek unnecessary battles."
Renn stood a little straighter at that.
Back in the dorm hall, whispers followed Kai again.
"Did you hear? He calmed a Mossback."
"That silver glow thing…"
"Advanced track already…"
Kai kept his head down. Attention felt heavier now.
Theo nudged him lightly. "You okay?"
"Yeah. Just thinking."
That evening, Master Elowen summoned him again.
Her chamber felt different this time, quieter.
"You used Moonlight infusion in front of three students," she said calmly.
Kai stiffened. "It was the safest option."
"I agree." She walked slowly around him. "But power revealed spreads faster than rumor."
She stopped in front of him.
"Other academies have observers. The capital has spies. And there are factions who study rare abilities."
Kai's chest tightened slightly.
"I'm not telling you to hide," Elowen continued. "I'm telling you to grow steadily. Don't rush evolution. Let your foundation solidify."
He nodded. "I understand."
She softened slightly. "You handled today well. Your Heart Gauge rose."
He blinked. "You can see it?"
"A faint echo of it. Yes."
That surprised him more than anything else.
Later that night, Kai couldn't sleep.
He climbed to the dorm roof quietly.
Bouncy glowed faintly beside him. Zephyr perched on his knee.
"Am I growing too fast?" he whispered.
Bouncy nudged his hand.
Zephyr fluffed his feathers, calm and steady.
A soft voice interrupted.
"You're growing at the pace you need."
Kai turned.
Aria stood near the edge of the roof, Ember curled around her shoulders.
"Couldn't sleep either?" she asked.
"Guess not."
She sat beside him, legs dangling over the edge.
"Renn talked about you today," she said casually.
Kai raised a brow. "In a bad way?"
"No. He said you think before acting. That it saved Fang from charging too hard."
Kai smiled faintly. "That's… something."
Aria looked up at the stars.
"You know," she said softly, "most people chase strength to stand out. You use it to hold things together."
He didn't know what to say to that.
The moment felt quiet. Easy.
[Heart Gauge: 73%]
Kai felt it rise gently.
Then
A pulse.
Sharp. Cold.
The Heart Gauge flickered briefly down to 70%.
Kai sat upright.
"Did you feel that?" he muttered.
Aria blinked. "Feel what?"
Zephyr fluttered nervously.
Far beyond the academy walls, deep in the forest shadows, something stirred.
A faint ripple of dark energy spread like ink in water.
Not violent.
Not loud.
But wrong.
Master Elowen stood in her tower chamber, eyes closed.
"I felt it too," she whispered.
Back on the roof, Kai stood slowly.
The warmth of teamwork and friendship still glowed in his chest.
But something else had entered the board now.
Something older.
Something watching more closely than before.
And this time…
It wasn't just observing.
It was moving.
