Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

The academy didn't lock down after the Grove.

It tightened.

Extra patrols along the forest edge.

Quiet conversations between instructors.

First-years noticed the change, more eyes on them, fewer free hours.

But Master Elowen addressed it plainly at morning assembly.

"Fear feeds imbalance," she said, voice steady. "We train. We learn. We prepare. That is how we answer."

Kai felt the truth of it settle in his chest.

No panic.

Just purpose.

Later that afternoon Instructor Lena gathered the first-years in the main arena.

"New exercise," she announced. "Strategic control. Not brute force."

The field had been re-marked, colored flags in zones, low barriers, open sight lines.

"Teams capture and hold two zones for ten minutes. Contest if you want, but no direct harm. Win with coordination, timing, positioning."

Kai's team stayed together.

Aria cracked her knuckles. "Finally something that rewards brains."

Theo adjusted his glasses. "This plays to our strengths."

Renn almost smiled.

They claimed two side zones near low walls, defensible, good sight lines.

Kai laid it out quickly.

"Defensive anchor. Zephyr scouts high. Theo's owl covers blind spots. Aria applies pressure when needed. Renn blocks breakthroughs."

Renn lifted a brow. "And you?"

Kai gave a small smile. "I hold the line."

The whistle blew.

Another team charged their nearest flag, fast, aggressive.

"Too eager," Theo murmured.

"Ember, flare wall," Aria said calmly.

A clean arc of flame rose, blocking the direct path without scorching anyone.

Renn moved Fang along the flank, lightning crackling just enough to make the attackers hesitate and split.

Kai waited.

A tall boy with a stone mole burrowed under the flame wall.

"Below!" Zephyr chirped.

Kai snapped Wind-Infused Bounce.

Bouncy spun low, downward gust collapsing the tunnel safely but firmly.

The boy popped up, dazed.

Renn stepped in, Fang's presence alone enough to freeze him in place.

No blows. Just control.

They held.

Minutes ticked by.

Other teams clashed harder in the center, loud, flashy.

Kai watched.

"Second zone's exposed," he said.

Aria grinned. "Let's take it."

They moved smooth.

Theo's owl flashed distraction at the edge.

Zephyr relayed patterns.

Bouncy bounced unpredictable arcs, wind interference throwing off timing.

They claimed the second flag with almost no resistance.

Eight minutes in

A tremor rolled under the ground.

Not part of the drill.

Kai's chest tightened.

[Corrupt Energy: Distant – Rising]

Not here.

Somewhere beyond.

Heart Gauge dipped.

[Heart Gauge: 76%]

He breathed through it.

Focus.

Timer ended.

Team Seven held both zones.

Cheers went up.

Instructor Lena smiled, rare and genuine. "Excellent patience. Excellent control."

Renn let out a short laugh. "We're actually good at this."

Kai smiled back.

Yeah.

They were.

But even as the team laughed and slapped shoulders under the afternoon sun

Far beyond the academy, deeper in the shadowed woods past the Grove

A cloaked figure knelt beside a faintly glowing sigil carved into an old stump.

A crystal lens hovered before them.

Inside it, Kai's silver flare from the Grove replayed, slow, frame by frame.

"So the Heart Channel purges corruption," the figure murmured, thoughtful.

A taller shadow stepped forward.

"And the vessel?"

"Responsive. Balanced. Still unaware of his ceiling."

The taller figure's voice dropped colder.

"Then increase the pressure. Slowly. Do not shatter him yet."

"Understood."

The lens dimmed.

Back on the training field, Kai stood with his team.

Aria nudged his shoulder. "You're drifting again."

"Just thinking."

Renn folded his arms. "Thinking wins fights."

Theo nodded. "It does."

Kai looked at them, his team, his balance.

This was what the Core needed.

Heart and power.

Protection and growth.

But out there, in the dark beyond the wards, Someone was watching.

Taking notes.

Adjusting.

The board had grown bigger.

And the next move might not be gentle.
