Chapter 5: I Am Not Human
The Nameless Monarch spoke with the God of Scholars for a long while.
When their words ended, he left.
Before he could return to solitude, the Goddess of Dreams appeared before him once more. This time, her expression carried questions she had not voiced earlier.
She did not circle her words.
"Nameless," she said, "humans can inherit godhood from their teachers. You know this."
He nodded.
"Then why," she continued, "did the God of Scholars not suggest this path to you? You could approach an ancient god, become their disciple, inherit their divinity, and ascend without trials."
She studied him carefully.
"This ability belongs only to humans," she said. "That is why so many races resent them. They can reach godhood without facing the trials. You know this. So why not choose that path?"
The Nameless Monarch looked at her calmly.
"I know," he said. "But that path is closed to me."
The Goddess of Dreams frowned.
"What do you mean?"
He answered without hesitation.
"I am not human."
Silence followed.
"I am not a god either," he continued. "Nor any single race."
He lifted his gaze.
"I carry the blood of gods. I carry the blood of dragons. And more that no longer have names."
The Goddess of Dreams slowly understood.
"I am a mixture," the Monarch said. "Something formed between species, not belonging to any of them."
He shook his head slightly.
"That rule," he said, "the inheritance of godhood through a master—it applies only to humans."
A pause.
"For me, it is impossible."
The Goddess of Dreams said nothing.
"I cannot become a god through another," the Monarch concluded.
"I must walk the path meant for gods' children."
