Chapter 24 - The Unspoken Revelation

A strange silence hung over the gilded corridors of Eldrida Palace. Sofia noticed Emily standing on the balcony, her gaze fixed on the distant horizon where Prince Rayan's caravan had disappeared only yesterday. The usual spark in Emily's eyes was missing, replaced by a veil of melancholy.

Sofia, who was not only Emily's dedicated butler but also her closest confidante, approached her with grace. Softening her tone with royal elegance, she asked:

"Princess Emily, forgive my intrusion upon your solitude, but might I inquire what has cast this shadow of sorrow upon your countenance? Your eyes speak of a grief that your lips have yet to utter."

Emily let out a long, weary sigh and turned to Sofia. "I do not know myself, Sofia. I cannot fathom why I feel so distressed. It is just... I cannot explain why, but lately, I feel a profound sense of loneliness. As if, even within these high palace walls, something vital is missing."

Sofia's heart swelled with sudden guilt. She feared that perhaps her growing closeness with Prince Cable and the hours they spent together had unintentionally left Emily feeling neglected.

Bowing her head in deep respect, Sofia spoke in a gentle, melodic voice, "Princess, I beg your forgiveness. I fear that my personal engagements and the time spent in Prince Cable's company have inadvertently cast you into the shadows of isolation. As your butler, my primary devotion is to your service; as your friend, my joy lies in your smile. I am truly repentant for this lapse in my attention."

Emily reached out and took Sofia's hand, a flicker of confusion in her eyes—perhaps she herself didn't realize if this loneliness was due to Cable's absence or the void left by Rayan's departure.

As Sofia and Emily were still conversing, a royal messenger entered the chamber. Bowing deeply, he handed a sealed parchment to Sofia.

"This letter has been sent to you by Prince Rayan as he crossed the borders of Eldrida, Sofia," the messenger announced before departing.

The moment Sofia broke the seal, a sudden radiance washed over Emily's face. The melancholy in her eyes vanished instantly, and she stood beside Sofia with unmistakable eagerness. "A letter from Rayan? Is... is he safe? What has he written?" The excitement and sheer joy in Emily's voice were impossible to hide.

As Sofia read the letter, she meticulously observed the changing expressions on Emily's face. Rayan had written:

"Sofia, my dear friend...

I trust this letter finds you in the finest of spirits.

Though I am journeying toward my kingdom, my soul remains anchored within the enchanting gardens of Eldrida. I find myself haunted at every turn by the memory of that 'someone special'—one whose profound silence shattered my heart, yet whose eyes whispered a lingering hope. I miss her presence more than words can express. I only ask for your prayers, that I might one day find a sanctuary within her heart.

It is my deepest hope that these words reach the one whom I can never truly forget."

A friend of yours

Rayan Igthen

Hearing these lines, Emily beamed, a radiant smile gracing her lips that she couldn't suppress even if she tried. Seeing Emily's unrestrained happiness, everything became clear to Sofia. She remembered how Rayan often spoke of a girl he loved beyond measure, though he never mentioned her name.

A knowing smile played on Sofia's lips. She finally understood that the girl Rayan was yearning for was none other than her own Princess Emily. And Emily's 'loneliness' wasn't caused by Cable—it was the void left by Rayan's departure.

While Emily was still smiling, clutching Rayan's previous letter to her chest, Sofia quietly sat at her desk and pulled out a fresh sheet of parchment. She was determined to uncover the truth behind Rayan's unspoken words so she could heal Emily's hidden sorrow.

Sofia dipped her quill into the ink and began to write with utmost royal grace and dignity:

"Your Royal Highness, Prince Rayan,

I trust you find yourself in good health after crossing the borders of Eldrida. Your departure has left a void in the aura of this palace that we all profoundly feel.

I write this to you with the authority of a friend and as your trusted confidante. The mention of that 'someone special' and the yearning in your previous message have stirred a deep curiosity within me. The silent anticipation in Princess Emily's eyes and the rare radiance that graces her face at the mere mention of your name... might I be so bold as to assume the truth is now clear before me?

Is it possible that the 'someone special' whose heart you left behind in Eldrida is none other than our dear Princess Emily? If my intuition holds true, rest assured that your sentiments will remain etched in a safe heart. To embrace the truth is to find solace for the soul, and I shall await the resonance of your heart's call."

Your good wishes

Sofia Monarch

Arya entered the throne room, where King Julian, Queen Ava, Crown Prince Liam, Prince Cable, Lady Emily, and Sofia were already seated. The room fell silent as everyone noticed Arya's troubled expression and the weight she carried.

Queen Ava rose from her throne, concern etched on her face:

"Arya, dear niece, what brings you to Eldrida City so suddenly? Is all well?"

Arya took a deep breath before beginning:

"I've come to tell you all something... My engagement to Prince Ryker of Brindlemark is ended."

Gasps filled the room, followed by shocked murmurs. Arya continued, sharing every detail – the reasons for her broken engagement, her heavy feelings, and her final decision. The room listened intently; Sofia exchanged a sympathetic glance with Lady Emily, and Prince Cable's eyes never left Arya's face, as if trying to absorb her sorrow.

When Arya finished, Queen Ava opened her arms for a warm embrace:

"You're safe now, dear. You can stay with us as long as you need."

Princess Arya hugged Queen Ava tightly, tears of gratitude welling in her eyes:

"Thank you, Aunt Ava. Your kindness means everything to me."

Queen Ava smiled warmly and signaled to a lady-in-waiting:

"See that Princess Arya is settled in the East Wing's Rose Suite – her favorite room since childhood."

The lady-in-waiting curtsied and escorted Arya out of the throne room, leaving the royal family to process the heavy news.

As Arya departed, Queen Ava turned to the remaining family members and Sofia:

"Let us give Arya time to rest. We shall dine together tonight and discuss... everything."

Prince Cable nodded thoughtfully, glancing at Sofia, who was watching Arya disappear down the hallway. Sofia excused herself with a gentle curtsy:

"May I help Princess Arya settle in, Your Majesty? We haven't caught up in ages."

Queen Ava smiled warmly: "Of course, Sofia. See that Arya has everything she needs."

Sofia hurried out of the throne room, following the path Arya had taken towards the East Wing's Rose Suite. She found Arya unpacking slowly, looking relieved but still troubled. Sofia opened her arms for a tight hug:

"Arya, I'm so glad you're here! I've missed you."

Arya smiled weakly before Sofia pulled back and asked directly:

"How did all this happen with Prince Ryker – and more importantly, where is Ethan?"

Arya's eyes filled with tears as she sat down on the bed: "You're one of the few people who know about us..."

Sofia nodded gently: "Yes, you trusted me with your secret. So, tell me everything – what happened, and where is Ethan now?"

With a heavy heart, Arya poured out the entire story of the palace fire, her father's ultimate sacrifice, and Ethan's choice to exile himself to the Battle Grounds to atone for the tragedy.

Arya's tears flowed freely as she poured out her heart to Sofia:

"Ethan and I... we fell deeply in love. He was a soldier in my father's kingdom."

Sofia nodded gently. Arya continued, her voice trembling:

"But before we could even dream of a future together, my father discovered our relationship. He was furious and arranged my marriage to Prince Ryker immediately."

Sofia's eyes widened in shock. Arya's voice cracked:

"Ethan thought I had chosen Prince Ryker over him... that I was cheating on him with my fiancé. In his grief and anger, Ethan accidentally started a fire in the palace... Our palace burned, and my father, King Duck, died in the flames."

Sofia gasped, tears welling up in her eyes. Arya's tears slowed, replaced by a deep sadness:

"My father... he died soon. The grief consumed him."

Sofia offered comfort, hugging Arya gently. Arya pulled back, her voice barely audible:

"I don't know... I don't understand what I should do now."

Sofia took Arya's hands, offering hope:

"Think about this calmly, Arya... maybe now you and Ethan can be together, free from obligations."

But Arya's expression turned icy:

"No, Sofia... that's impossible. Because of him, my father lost his life... I will never forgive Ethan for that."

Sofia looked stunned by Arya's harsh words. Her voice was gentle, probing:

"Arya, despite everything... do you still love him?"

Arya's expression hardened, her voice firm:

"No. My love died with my father."

Sofia looked saddened by Arya's absolute denial. Arya added, her tone unwavering:

"Do not ask me that again, Sofia. My heart is closed to Ethan forever."

The room fell silence, heavy with Arya's unresolved grief and the cold embers of a broken love.
