Chapter 28 - Shadows of the Past

A day had passed since Sofia's disappearance, and concern was etched deep on the faces of her friends. Emily and Arya approached Cable in the palace hallway, their expressions clouded with worry.

"Have you seen Sofia lately?" Emily asked, her voice tinged with unease.

Cable hesitated, measuring his words with agonizing care: "I don't know."

Arya's eyebrows rose in suspicion: "You've been so close to her for so long, and now she's nowhere to be found... Did you two have a fight?"

Emily added gently, trying to bridge the gap: "If you did, Cable, you should talk to her—work things out. After all... you love each other."

Cable's eyes dropped at Emily's words. "...you love each other." The phrase echoed in his mind, sparking a sudden realization. He looked up, his resolve hardening. "You're right," he said firmly. "We love each other."

Then, without another word of explanation, he spun around and hastily departed from the corridor. He sprinted across the courtyard, his footsteps echoing sharply off the stone walls. Reaching the stables, he swiftly mounted his horse and gripped the reins tight.

With a sharp command, the horse galloped out of the palace gates, carrying Cable away from the sanctuary of the palace—and its painful memories—into the vast unknown.

As the sound of the horse's hooves faded into the distance, Emily and Arya looked at each other in total bewilderment. They could not understand what had just happened or where Cable was racing off to in such a desperate hurry.

Cable's horse navigated through the dense jungle foliage, his heart racing with a desperate hope – would he find Sofia? After what felt like an agonizing eternity, Cable spotted a figure by the riverbank – it was Sofia.

His face lit up with a warm, radiant smile as he slid off his horse and approached her eagerly. His eyes locked onto hers, filled with raw relief and joy: "Sofia!" he exclaimed softly, opening his arms wide for an embrace.

But as he drew closer, his smile faltered at the haunting scene before him. A lifeless cat lay beside her, its glassy eyes staring into nothingness. Another cat struggled in her grasp, Sofia's fingers digging deep into its fur. Blood smeared her mouth and hands, her eyes gleaming with an unnatural, predatory hunger. Her fangs were bared, poised to sink into the helpless creature's neck...

Yet, strangely, Cable's expression didn't fill with terror – only a profound, aching concern for Sofia: "Sofia, what's happening to you?" he whispered, reaching out gently.

Cable wrapped his arms around Sofia from behind, pulling her into a tight, protective embrace as the frightened cat escaped into the shadows of the jungle. Sofia struggled to free herself, her body trembling, but Cable's grip only intensified.

"Leave me..." Sofia whispered, her voice laced with pure anguish. "Cable, let me go... I am not who you think I am."

But Cable didn't budge. He buried his face in her shoulder, his voice low and cracking with devastating emotion:

"Just for a little while... just for a little while, stay like this. My love, my heart... it has been feeding on the illusion of you – the image of a mortal woman with a beating heart. But now I realize... my only true sustenance is your existence itself. Without you, I am fading away – dying from the sheer emptiness of a world that doesn't have you in it."

His arms tightened around her waist, as if willing her soul to stay bound to his:

"Don't leave me to this cold darkness, Sofia... Take me with you – into whatever eternal night you inhabit. I tried... God, I tried so hard to walk away, to listen to the world, but I can't do this anymore. Don't go... please don't leave me behind. I've realized that I don't need a heartbeat to love you; I just need you. I cannot live another day without you."

Sofia's resistance completely faded as Cable's words pierced through her defenses, leaving her heart bare.

Together, they dissolved into tears – deep, wrenching sobs that shook their entire bodies. Cable buried his face in Sofia's hair, holding her even closer as she leaned back into his chest, seeking refuge in his strength.

Their desperate embrace remained unbroken for a long, sorrowful time – the only sound was the haunting rhythm of their heartbreaking weeping. The jungle around them faded into a heavy silence, as if nature itself was mourning the weight of their painful love.

Hours might have passed – or maybe only minutes – before their tears slowly subsided into quiet sniffles and gentle, lingering hugs. On that riverbank, amidst the shadows, they found a peace that the rest of the world had denied them.

In the lingering silence of the riverbank, only the sound of the flowing water remained. Cable gently pulled Sofia a few inches away, though his hands remained firmly clasped in hers. The fear in his eyes had been replaced by a deep, aching curiosity.

Cable looked into her eyes and asked in a low, steady voice:

"Sofia... now that we are here, tell me everything. Tell me the truth about your past. What happened in your previous life? How did you escape that darkness and find your way to Lady Emily? And who was the one who forced this life upon you?"

He squeezed her hand slightly, as if to give her strength. "I want to know everything that made you who you are today. Don't hide anything from me anymore, because I want to be a part of your entire truth."

Sofia's eyes filled with tears once more. She knew the time had come to reveal the darkest chapters of her soul to the man she loved. Taking a long, shaky breath, she began to descend into the haunting depths of her memories.

Flashback: 150 Years Ago

The night in the village was serene. Sofia was enjoying the warmth of the hearth with her parents. Her father was telling her a favorite story when, suddenly, the barking of dogs turned into a collective scream.

"Fire! Run!" someone shouted from outside.

Sofia's father slammed the door shut, but it shattered like paper. From the shadows emerged figures that were not human. Their eyes glowed a predatory red. Sofia gripped her mother's hand, but in an instant, her mother was dragged into the darkness.

Everything was a blur—the scent of burning wood, the metallic tang of blood, and a cold, icy laugh.

The leader of the pack approached Sofia. He lifted her chin with frozen nails. "Such innocence... it would be a waste to end it," he whispered. He sank his fangs into her neck. The pain was excruciating—as if liquid fire was being poured into her veins. She collapsed, her last vision being her home engulfed in flames.

The Dark Journey

When Sofia's eyes opened after the destruction, the world had shifted. The sunlight that once brought her peace now seared her skin. But the most terrifying change was the 'Thirst'—a fire that burned constantly in the back of her throat.

Her new family, the pack of vampires, wanted to mold her into a predator.

"Look, Sofia," Viktor would say, baring his fangs toward an innocent villager, "this fear, this warm blood... this is your life now. Embrace it."

Sofia pulled her hands back, trembling. Her soul screamed that she could not be a murderer. While the rest of the pack preyed on the villagers, Sofia would hide in dark caves or the densest parts of the forest. She would writhe in agony from the hunger, her veins feeling like they were about to burst, but she vowed never to take a human life.

To satisfy this uncontrollable hunger, she found a different path. Under the cover of night, she would sprint through the woods, hunting wild animals. Preying on a deer or a rabbit wasn't easy; the human side of her still recoiled in disgust. But to save her morality, she began to feed on animal blood. It was bitter, tasteless, and it didn't provide the surge of power that human blood offered, but it kept Sofia from becoming a 'monster.'

The pack mocked her. Viktor would often jeer, "How long will you deceive your soul by drinking the blood of beasts? You are a vampire, Sofia, a hunter!"

But Sofia didn't give in. She spent her nights looking for a way to escape them. she made long, grueling journeys through the wilderness, sleeping in the dirt and moving only by the light of the moon. She was searching for a place where she could exist in peace without harming anyone.

It was during one of these desperate flights that she encountered Mr. Thornton, who was mortally wounded. That encounter became the turning point of her life. She used every ounce of her supernatural strength to stand against her own 'brother,' Viktor, to protect Thornton. Even though she couldn't save his life, seeing the pity in that dying man's eyes convinced Sofia that she wasn't entirely a monster.

Following the path Thornton had whispered, Sofia spent weeks traveling through the wild, starving and exhausted, until she finally reached the borders of Lady Emily's estate.
