Chapter 23 - Game Night

Tonight was game night, which was to say there was a football game. Personally I didn't actually care all that much for football, which always seemed to surprise people. I didn't dislike it, I just didn't care for it. Most sports seemed to boil down to a bunch of sweaty men pumped up full of adrenaline chasing each other and obsessing over balls and rules. The rules part also tended to just break down to trying to get away with bending or breaking the rules while trying to hold the other teams accountable for the rules.

How thrilling.

But cheerleaders had their part to play at these games so whatever. Joey also didn't care for football, or most sports but he always came to the games just to watch me. Meanwhile, most of the other girls seemed to enjoy football a lot more than I did. I guess that made sense, several of them were also dating or sleeping with members of the football team.

Kaley came over with a big old smile on her face. "We really got the crowd roaring with that last performance" she seemed so proud of herself. Out of everyone on the team she always seemed to most excited about getting the crowd excited.

"I'm just glad it was a roar and not a bark like last time" I giggled, last game the announcer had all the people in the stands barking like dogs. It felt like someone was just trying to live out a kink. Joey joked he should've brought some tennis balls for people to play with.

"Hey there ladies, doing an awesome job as always" I heard a man approaching and rolled my eyes. I already knew who it was. "Oh thank you Johnny" Kaley practically bounced in place, always eager to get a compliment and Johnny was always happy to hand them out.

"And Jessy, you are just killing it out there, if Jade doesn't watch out you might take her place!" Johnny always tried to joke with me, I didn't care for him. He was the biggest party guy out of all the football players, and also the most likely to fuck a sock if he couldn't get a girl for the night.

"Ha. Ha. Ha." I rolled my eyes. Jade was our captain, and she was a good captain. I for one, did not care to ever be captain. Leadership didn't look good on me.

"Oh don't mind her, she's just in the zone you know" Kaley made excuses for me as she wrapped her arms around Johnny who practically beamed with joy. Ugh, Johnny was benched at the moment and Jade had us on break so I guess we're stuck with him.

"Hey Jessy, I'm going to be having a party at the frat house later on. You should totally come! You can even bring um what's his name? Well your boyfriend."

I didn't respond, instead I just glared at Johnny who chuckled awkwardly, seeming to shrink for a moment. "Oh she never comes to the frat parties! But don't worry I'll be there" Kaley was quick to jump in.

A lot of people tended to go to the frat houses to party. I went once, seemed like a great spot for people to drink and flirt and fuck. I already had Joey for 2 of those 3 things and while I loved a good martini, I did not like getting wasted. It just got me sloppy, I'd rather stay at the top of my game as much as possible.

Joey loved drinking, but didn't last very long before he was seeing stars. It was cute to see him get drunk and immediately try to flirt with me like he was still single. Hm... I wonder how Barrett get's when he's drunk?

"Johnny are you really throwing another party?" Maddie scoffed as she join in. Maddie also didn't go to frat parties or really any party. She used to be a heavier girl in middle school and then worked like hell to lose enough weight to join the cheer squad at her high school. Honestly she looked great, but she was always paranoid about her figure and insisted parties tricked people into snacking and drinking into obesity.

I'm pretty sure she's wrong but it's more fun to say she's right. "If you keep this up you'll end up with a heart attack before the end of the season!" Maddie chastised Johnny. "I mean look at you, you're already starting to gain weight!"

"Hey! That's all muscle baby" Johnny countered and flexed for us. I rolled my eyes, meanwhile Kaley looked like she wanted to be picked up and carried away. "Nah, your fat" I said with a smile and Johnny's face dropped.

"Jessy! Don't be mean" Kaley defended him. Hm now that I think about it hadn't Kaley been recently caught cheating on her boyfriend with one of the soccer players? Before that I had heard she had been kicked out of the library after getting caught with one of the basketball players. Seems she had a bigger taste for sports men than for her boyfriend, oh well, it's none of my business.

"I'm not mean, I call him fat out of concern for his own wellbeing. What if he gets so big they kick him out? Or worse! Roll him out?" I chuckled and Maddie frowned. "Don't joke! That could actually happen! What are you even going to have at the party? Chips and beer again?"

Before Johnny could protest though Jennifer came sliding in as she usually did. "Well hello ladies and gentle sirs!" She sang out the words. Jen had apparently been a theater student before trying out for the cheer team. It um showed. But she was fun to have around and everyone seemed to like her.

Jen spun on her heels and came face to face with Johnny "you sir need to stop inviting Jessy over. We all know you just want to try and sleep with her. Which would maybe be less obvious if you hadn't tried to do that last time she went to a party."

Oh yea, at that frat party I did go to Johnny kept flirting with me and then at one point he smacked my ass. I kicked his leg in which caused him to fall head first on a table. Luckily that table broke his fall, unluckily, he broke that table with his fall.

That was also the day everyone learned about Joey. Apparently before that most people seemed to think I was single. Well the people who went to the same high school as Joey and I already knew, but everyone else seemed surprised.

Johnny's face got red as a tomato while Jen spun back to look at Maddie. "You need to stop being everyone's mom. Let people be dumb, so long as it's their own lives they ruin. Who cares?" Maddie rolled eyes and crossed her arms, she didn't like being told she was being a mom.

I almost laughed but Jen spun once more. I guess it's my turn now. "How about you hang out with me instead? I could invite my girlfriend and we could make it a sort of double date? She loves playing video games so we could do that. I'll even make that strawberry martini you like!"

Oh, well I liked my turn. "That sounds great Jen! You really are a true diplomat" I giggled, happy to have had Jen's intervention. I had only met her girlfriend once, I knew she was an artist but other than that I didn't really know much else. But she seemed sweet enough.

"Well since we're all starting to crowd together, we might as well put on a show" Jade spoke in her typical monotone voice as she walked over and placed her hand on her hips. Everyone chuckled awkwardly and Johnny quickly disappeared. Jade could cut ice with her words, and nobody really wanted to feel their sting. That would change when it was time to perform, the woman came alive in a really big way.

She was all smiles and giggles during interviews, performances, or anything where she had to represent the team; and most people seemed to think she was a real people's person. But with us, she was a wall full of expectations. Luckily even with everyone's silliness we did tend to meet those expectations and today would be no different.

We went through the rest of the game without incident though Jade didn't give us any more breaks. At one point she decided Jen had too much energy and decided to send her off to play with the mascot. The crowd loved that.

Once the game was over we made our way to the locker rooms and showers. Once inside I headed over to one of the showers but Jade was waiting for me. "Oh um hey captain, everything alright?"

Jade looked at me with her usual cold eyes. Her eyes were a cold blue color that reminded me of the frost after a harsh winter storm. It didn't help that sometimes it felt like they were looking into my very soul. "I heard you insulting Johnny, seemed you were having fun."

Oh that? Was she somehow upset about that? "Oh um yea" I wasn't even really sure what to say. I wasn't going to apologize.

"You've never been a push over. I like that about you" Jade continued. "But before you would simply tell him off and leave. You seem a bit... Different... Even in practice, you've always strived to be the best. But lately you seem less tense, and more lively."

Did I really? I certainly didn't feel that different. I opened my mouth to speak when Jade held up her hand to stop me. "I don't care. But rumors move faster than the lips that speak them. Keep it quiet, keep it hidden. I'm losing patience with all the drama."

Jade then began to walk away leaving me wondering. Did she know about Barrett? Or was she assuming I was sleeping around like Kaley? "Oh and be nice to the new girl" Jade said just before leaving. "Sounds like she really looks up to you."

"New girl?" I turned in full confusion. Jade paused before simply saying "A spot opened up on the team. As I said, I'm getting tired of the drama. Besides, Kaley will get the support she needs from her sorority sisters."

Jade tilted her head over to me, looking at me with one eye. "You never did join a sorority did you?" I felt the color leave my face. "No ma'am" came my soft reply. Jade nodded "keep things quiet, and keep up the good work."

With that Jade took her leave, and left my heart pounding in my chest.
