Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Delivering a Phone

The moment the food delivery was placed in Jane Sterling's hands, Luna Nash's gaze locked onto the fragrant bag.

She didn't even notice the man who had appeared before them.

She licked her lips and finally tore her eyes away from the bag.

When she looked up, she saw a refined, handsome man wearing gold-rimmed glasses standing before them.

She couldn't help but float from Jane Sterling's side over to the man, circling him and looking him up and down.

Then, she glanced at the other paper bag in Jane Sterling's hand and asked with a suggestive look.

"Jane Sterling, is this your boyfriend?"

She had sharp eyes and spotted the latest model phone in the bag, which made her smile grow even more suggestive.

"Just now at the post station, I saw your phone had a huge crack. It looked like it was about to die. Your boyfriend is so thoughtful! He actually got you a brand-new phone!"

As she spoke, she seemed to recall something and sized Jane up and down.

"By the way, are you even an adult yet? You know, dating this young is wrong."

Jane Sterling rolled her eyes at Luna Nash, who was rattling on like a machine gun.

"I am an adult, thank you very much. I just turned eighteen yesterday."

The man watched as Jane Sterling snapped a reply at the empty air beside her, and he froze on the spot.

However, his professional training kicked in, and he simply pushed up his glasses.

But his eyes darted around. It was late, quiet, and deserted out here. Besides a small supermarket, there was nothing.

If it weren't for the fact that he absolutely had to complete the task his boss gave him, he never would have come to this godforsaken place.

"Excuse me, were you talking to me?"

The assistant rubbed his arms, a fresh wave of goosebumps breaking out. He braced himself and asked the question.

Jane Sterling heard his question and pulled her attention away from her conversation with Luna Nash.

"Oh, no, no. I wasn't talking to you."

The assistant's expression grew even more unsettled.

'If she wasn't talking to him, then who was she talking to?'

'That's even more terrifying than if she *had* been talking to me.'

In an instant, every hair on the assistant's body stood on end.

Seeing the well-dressed professional before her, Luna Nash was suddenly struck with a mischievous idea.

She floated over to the man's side and blew a gentle puff of air on his neck.

"I'm right behind you..."

The assistant couldn't hear her words, but he definitely felt the chill of her breath on his skin.

The assistant froze on the spot, his entire body going rigid.

He slowly raised a hand to touch the back of his neck.

'I wasn't imagining things. Someone definitely just blew on my neck.'

He stiffly turned his neck to look behind him.

But unfortunately, there was nothing there but his black sedan.

In that moment, the way the assistant looked at her grew even stranger.

'A deserted suburb, a strange girl... no matter how I think about it, this is just wrong.'

'And this strange girl is talking to thin air.'

In a flash, a million different horror stories raced through the assistant's mind.

He started to panic. Sure, the pay for working under Drew Thorne was great, but no salary was high enough to risk his life for.

Suddenly, not caring whether the girl would be offended, he blurted out a sentence.

"If you have any questions, just ask him! Ask the boss directly!"

After saying his piece, he ignored Jane Sterling completely, spun around, and got back into his car.

He fumbled to start the engine, and with a VROOM, he sped off, leaving nothing but a cloud of exhaust.

Seeing how fast he was going, Jane Sterling couldn't help but worry that at this rate, he'd drive straight into a ditch.

"What a strange guy."

Jane Sterling muttered to herself, looking down at the phone in her hand.

'Well, whatever. I did spend 300,000 M-coins to save his grandfather. I suppose I can accept this as a thank-you gift.'

She then hefted the food delivery in her other hand.

"Come on. Let's head back. We can eat while we sort this out for you."

Seeing the assistant's reaction, Luna Nash felt a little smug.

There was a certain sense of accomplishment in being able to scare someone as a ghost.

She gleefully tagged along behind Jane Sterling, turning back into the post station.

By now, Bianca had changed into a tiny suit and tie. He was sitting right on the post station's table, one leg crossed over the other, pouting at the two as they entered.

"What took you so long? I've been waiting forever!"

Seeing Bianca, Luna Nash floated over to him in amazement and circled around him.

"Whose adorable little kid is this?"

As she spoke, Luna Nash reached out, wanting to touch Bianca's cheek.

But, unfortunately, her hand passed right through Bianca's body.

However, looking at Bianca's slightly transparent body, she asked in surprise.

"Don't tell me you're a ghost, too?"

Bianca looked at Luna Nash and pouted irritably.

"You're the ghost! So rude!"

Luna looked at Bianca. He had the face of an adorable child, but the way he spoke was strangely stuffy and formal.

Luna Nash floated to the side, clutching her stomach as she laughed.

Jane Sterling placed the barbecue skewers in the middle of the table, carefully setting aside Luna Nash's commissioned item so it wouldn't get dirty.

As soon as she opened it, the scent of barbecue instantly filled the entire post station.

"Come on, time for you to try the ultimate human late-night snack!"

Although Bianca wasn't human, he could still eat human food.

'Maybe that's the difference between a system and a ghost.'

Seeing the two of them digging into the barbecue as if she weren't even there, Luna Nash grew anxious.

"What about me? What about me?! What am I supposed to do?!"

Bianca shot her an irritated glance.

"You're a ghost. You won't die if you don't eat."

'I won't die, sure, but it's torture watching others enjoy such delicious food.'

Luna Nash's face fell, and she huddled pitifully next to Jane Sterling.

She stared at the barbecue on the table, practically drooling.

Seeing how pathetic she looked, Jane Sterling lowered her head and asked Bianca.

"Is there any way to let her at least get a taste?"

Now that Bianca had gotten a bite of barbecue, he was in a great mood.

'I have to admit, the human world has its perks.'

'The food is just so good!'

'Way better than anything in my world.'

"Forget it. There's no way a ghost can eat anything. However..."

Bianca stroked his chin thoughtfully, then pulled a talisman from his pocket.

"She can't eat it, but I can let her smell it. That should help with the craving."

Luna Nash felt even more like crying, but no tears would come.

'Being able to smell it but not eat it? Isn't that an even crueler form of torture?!'

Bianca pinched the talisman between his chubby fingers and flicked it into the air.

The talisman instantly burst into flames, and Luna Nash's nose twitched.

She realized she could suddenly smell the barbecue.

And the barbecue, which had been black and white to her, suddenly appeared in full color.

"I can smell it! Oh my god, it smells so good! I wonder if I'll ever be able to eat something this delicious again in my life."

Watching Luna Nash leaning over the table and sniffing like a little puppy, Jane Sterling smiled softly.

She felt even more certain that she had to help her future classmate get back into her own body.

It would be such a shame for her to die so young.

Over the course of the evening, Jane Sterling and Luna Nash had already started to form a friendship.
