Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Late-night BBQ and a Grand Plan

The girl floated to Jane Sterling's side. Seeing the displeased look on Jane's face, she quickly forced a smile.

"Don't be mad. I didn't mean to offend you. I just didn't expect the person helping me would be a girl about my age."

Jane Sterling felt a little better after hearing this, and she went back to studying the girl.

The girl before her was just half a head shorter than her, her face still holding a bit of baby fat.

Only, blood dribbled from beneath her straight-cut bangs, dripping steadily onto the floor.

"Your head… What happened?"

The girl wiped at her forehead. Hearing this, her eyes darkened.

"My stepmom pushed me down the stairs for the family inheritance. Now my body is in a coma, and the inheritance is about to go to her and her son. Our family's business is going to fall into the hands of a mere mistress."

Jane Sterling pulled out a nearby stool and sat down, listening carefully to the girl's story.

After the girl finished her story, Jane finally understood.

She glanced again at the tokens in the middle of the table: a letter sealed with wax and a large package.

The package was bulging, apparently packed with quite a few things.

Jane Sterling resisted her curiosity. After all, as a professional courier, she had her own professional standards to uphold.

She would never open a client's package.

As she listened to the girl's ordeal, Jane learned her name was Luna Nash.

To her surprise, Luna was also an incoming student at Aethelgard University, just like her.

And by an even greater coincidence, she was also majoring in Natural Sciences, just like Jane.

The shared connection instantly closed the distance between them.

Luna Nash was the daughter of a wealthy tycoon. But as is often the case with the rich, there were dalliances, and her family was no exception.

When her father was younger, he kept a mistress and had two children with her.

Luna was the daughter of his first wife. After Luna was born, her parents' relationship fell apart, and her mother moved abroad.

Luna grew up with her father. However, once she was older, her father moved his mistress and their two children into the family mansion. The woman brazenly took her place as the new lady of the house.

Luna had known since she was a child that the woman's kindness was purely superficial.

In reality, the woman had secretly been wishing her dead for years, eager to monopolize the entire family fortune.

Then, just recently, her father died in a car accident.

The mistress, unable to wait, caught Luna off guard and pushed her down the stairs.

She took a nasty fall and has been in a coma ever since.

"Actually, as the eldest child, I not only hold company shares, but most of the family fortune was built by my father and my mother together. By all rights, it should all be mine! That mistress and her children have no claim to it whatsoever!"

Luna seethed with indignation while Jane listened attentively.

"What about your mother?"

At the mention of her mother, the light in Luna's eyes faded.

"My mother is still abroad. I'm afraid she doesn't know what's happened yet. But if she heard that mistress did this to me, she'd probably come storming back from overseas."

With that, Luna floated forward, her eyes pleading as she looked at Jane.

"You have to help me. I'll pay you whatever you want. Just deliver these at the shareholders' meeting tomorrow. I'm sure that mistress's scheme will fall apart!"

Jane looked at the two items on the table and nodded.

Even without the connection of being future classmates, she would have taken the job for the money alone.

Once they had an agreement, Jane glanced at the clock.

It was already two in the morning. After Luna finished her emotional tirade, Jane sat down and looked at her phone.

At the same time, she called out to Bianca in her mind.

'Bianca, get up! Time for some BBQ!'

Bianca was clearly fast asleep. Roused from a dream, it grumbled in annoyance.

'What BBQ? Have you seen the time? I want to sleep...'

Jane's reply was nonchalant.

'Are you sure you don't want any? It's now or never.'

Hearing this, Bianca jolted awake and practically leaped out of bed.

After a moment of silence, it replied haughtily.

'Fine. I'm on my way.'

Apparently, the allure of BBQ was too strong to resist. Jane chuckled to herself.

She glanced at Luna, who had been cursing her stepmother until she was practically hoarse, and asked casually,

"I'm ordering some barbecue. Want anything?"

Luna hovered there, stunned for a long moment.

"Barbecue… I haven't eaten in days."

Her words caught Jane's attention. Jane turned to study her more closely, a question forming in her mind.

'Can a non-human like her even eat?'

After a moment's thought, Jane realized the answer was obviously no.

If she tried to touch Luna, her hand would just pass right through her body.

'How could a transparent, non-human being possibly eat anything?'

Jane sighed.

"Never mind. We can go out to eat once you're back in your body."

Jane quickly finished ordering, setting the location to a small convenience store next to Aethelgard University.

The waystation they were in wasn't marked on any map.

So she had to set the delivery location to the convenience store. Thankfully, it was only a short walk away.

Jane stood by the side of the road waiting for her food delivery, with Luna floating in mid-air beside her.

"I don't even know if I'll make it back alive. It's been so long since I've smelled the aroma of food."

As she said this, Luna's expression grew somber.

Jane said encouragingly,

"Don't worry. As long as there's still a breath in your body, you can definitely be saved!"

Jane was being completely sincere. For the sake of her future classmate, she was even willing to spend another 300,000 M Coins on a Soul Revival Talisman to heal her.

Luna gave a bitter smile, thinking Jane was just trying to comfort her.

In her current state, being half-dead was the best she could hope for.

Her only desire now was to drive that mistress and her children out of the Nash family home,

and expose what she had done to the world.

'To think she'd do something like this for the inheritance… who knows if that child is even my father's biological son?'

Just as Jane got her food and was about to head back, she saw a dapper man in a suit and gold-rimmed glasses walking straight toward her.

Jane turned to walk back toward the waystation, but the man stopped her.

"Excuse me, are you Miss Jane Sterling?"

Jane was taken aback for a moment before turning to face the stranger.

"And you are…?"

The man offered a polite smile and took out a business card.

"I'm Mr. Drew Thorne's assistant. He asked me to give you this."

As he spoke, he handed a small gift bag to Jane.

Jane glanced at the contents of the bag and frowned.

"What's this for?"

Inside was a brand-new phone.

The assistant looked troubled.

"I'm not entirely sure myself. Perhaps you could message him and ask? I'm just here to follow orders."

With that, the man gave Jane an apologetic smile.
