A few minutes later, Spike and the boys came running back through the rain.
His face lit up when he saw me.
"We found a motel," Spike said. "About five minutes from here. Small place. Quiet road."
Good.
A motel was perfect. Easy to lock down. Easy to watch.
"Pay the owner a large amount," I told him. "Make sure every guest leaves. Now."
Spike didn't ask questions.
He just nodded and turned fast.
I already knew the assassins would not stop.
They never do.
Once a mission starts, they see it through to the end.
So the best move was to prepare.
And I was not letting innocent people get caught in the middle.
That's why I wanted the motel empty.
Because this was about to turn into war.
They think because I'm not in my mansion, not inside my strong walls, that I'm weak.
That I'm an easy target.
I almost smiled.
They were about to learn the hard way.
Jack stirred inside me, sharp and ready.
