I jumped off the bed the moment Spike said they were here.
My heart started to pound hard inside my chest.
Jack rose inside me at once.
Not loud.
Not wild.
Just alert.
Focused.
Danger close, Jack growled in my head.
I moved fast, pulling Bella behind me for one second before turning to Spike.
"Did the traps work?" I asked.
Spike shook his head.
"I don't know yet, Alpha."
Then the screams started.
Not human screams.
Wolf screams.
Deep.
Sharp.
Angry.
Claws scratched against walls.
Howls filled the air, long and cruel.
My blood turned cold.
"Are they wolves?" I asked.
"Yes," Spike answered.
That shocked me.
I thought it would be witches.
Jack bristled inside me.
Rogue wolves, he said. Traitors.
"Oh my God," Bella cried behind me. Her voice was shaking. "I'm going to die."
I turned to her at once.
"No," I said softly but firm. "You're not dying. Not on my watch."
Just then, one of my men burst through the door.
Blood covered his stomach.
