They came at dawn.
Not an army—Thomas had been wrong about that. A strike force. Elite hunters. Fifty of them, armed and armored in weapons designed specifically to kill Lycans.
I felt them before I saw them.
Through the Lycan network Selene had taught me to access, I could feel their approach like a disease spreading through the earth. Corrupted. Wrong. Intent on destruction.
*They're here,* I sent to the children, Astrid, and Selene. *Get to the safe room. Now.*
*What about you?* Astrid demanded.
*I'm going to hold them off.*
*Elena, you can't do this alone—*
*I won't be alone.* I looked at Selene, who was already positioning herself at the edge of the training grounds. *Selene's here. And between the two of us...*
*We'll hold them,* Selene finished. *Go, Astrid. Protect the children.*
*I don't like leaving you.*
*You're not leaving me.* I moved toward the entrance of the ancestral lands. *You're doing the more important job.*
*Flatterer.* Astrid's mental voice was affectionate. *Don't die.*
*I won't.*
*Good.* Astrid disappeared into the safe room with the children.
Then I waited.
And they came.
*Inquisition!* The leader called out, walking forward unarmed, his armor covered in religious symbols. *Surrender the Lycan abominations and we'll spare the rest.*
*I am the Lycan Queen,* I called back, shifting as I spoke. *And I don't negotiate with terrorists.*
*Terrorists?* The leader laughed. *We're doing god's work, abomination. Cleansing the earth of your kind. Of all your kind—vampires, witches, monsters, and—**
*I'm not a monster.* I let my Lycan form fully manifest—seven feet of fur and fangs and claws, violet-gold eyes burning with power. *I'm a mother. And you're not touching my children.*
*Your children will be taken.* The leader's voice was cold. *Studied. Experimented on. We'll learn how to exterminate your kind once and for all.*
*Try it.*
I lunged.
The Inquisition was ready.
They moved in perfect formation—silver-coated nets, wolfsbane-tipped spears, enchanted blades that glowed with holy light.
I was faster.
Dodged the first net, shredded the second, raked my claws across the armored chest of the nearest hunter.
He didn't bleed.
The armor held.
*Enchanted,* I realized. *Of course.*
*You can't win,* the leader taunted. *We've hunted your kind for thousands of years. We know your weaknesses. We know how to kill you.*
*You think you do.*
I reached for the Lycan network—the flow of energy Selene had shown me. Pulled it. Directed it.
Not into strength. Not into speed.
Into something else.
Into the earth beneath their feet.
*EARTH,* I commanded, using the Royal Voice amplified by the network. *SEIZE THEM.*
The ground erupted.
Rock and soil and roots burst upward, tangling around the hunters' legs, trapping them, holding them in place.
*Impossible,* the leader snarled, struggling against the earthen bindings. *You're just an animal. A beast. You can't—*
*I'm not just anything,* I cut him off. *I'm the Lycan Queen. And you've walked into the wrong territory.*
I attacked in earnest then.
Claws raking through armor where I found weak points. Teeth tearing through enchantments. The hunger—the Lycan urge to destroy—rising, and this time I didn't push it down.
I used it.
Channeled it.
Made it a weapon.
But there were fifty of them.
And only one of me.
*Selene,* I sent urgently. *I need help.*
*Working on it.*
I risked a glance toward where she'd been.
She wasn't fighting.
She was standing still, arms raised, eyes closed, and—
And glowing.
Not just her eyes. Her entire body. Radiating light that wasn't holy, wasn't enchanted, was just... power. Raw, concentrated Lycan power.
*What is she doing?* One of the hunters demanded, alarmed.
*Ending this.*
Selene opened her eyes.
And the world went white.
***
When my vision cleared, the hunters were on their knees.
Not physically restrained.
Mentally restrained.
Selene was holding them in place with nothing but her mind—fifty hunters, frozen in place, unable to move, unable to act, barely able to breathe.
*How?* The leader's mental voice was pure terror. *What are you?*
*I'm the last Lycan Elder,* Selene said calmly. *And you've underestimated me for the last time.*
*Kill them,* I sent. *Before they break free.*
*I can't.* Selene's mental voice was strained. *Holding them is taking everything I have. I can't... I can't attack too.*
*Then I will.*
I moved toward the leader, claws extended, ready to end this—
*ELENA, LOOK OUT.*
Astrid's warning came too late.
Something shot past me—a dart? an arrow?—and hit Selene in the throat.
She gasped. Her concentration broke.
The hunters surged free.
And Selene collapsed.
*SELENE.*
I ran to her, caught her before she hit the ground.
*What—what was that?*
*Poison,* she rasped. *The same kind they used on Thomas. Magical. Corrupted. It's... it's blocking my powers. Suppressing them. I—*
*Can you heal it?*
*No time.* Selene clutched my arm. *Listen to me. You have to finish this. You have to—*
*I don't know how!*
*Yes you do.* Selene's eyes locked on mine. *You've felt it. The network. The connection. The power that flows through everything. You need to access it. Fully. Completely. Not just a taste. Not just a glimpse. You need to—*
*To become it.*
*Yes.* Selene coughed, her lips stained with blood. *But be careful, Elena. That kind of power... it changes you. Whatever you are when you come out... you might not be the same person who went in.*
*I don't care.* I looked toward the hunters, who were regrouping, preparing to attack again. *I'll do whatever it takes to protect my children.*
*Good.* Selene squeezed my arm. *Then remember: power serves the will. Focus your will. Know what you want. What you really want. And let the power shape itself around that intention.*
*What do I want?*
*That's for you to figure out.* Selene's eyes fluttered closed. *Go. Finish this. I'll... I'll hold on as long as I can—*
*SELENE.*
*GO.*
I stood, turned to face the hunters, and—
*The children,* Astrid sent urgently. *Elena, they're flanking us. They sent a team around the main force. They're going for the safe room.*
*NO.*
Panic. Pure, blinding panic.
My children.
Darius. Felix. Lucian.
*On my way.*
*Elena, don't leave the main force,* Selene protested, weakened. *They'll overrun you—*
*They're not my priority.*
I ran toward the safe room, shifting fully, and—
And stopped.
There were six of them.
Six elite hunters, already breaking down the safe room door, already reaching for—
*GET AWAY FROM THEM.*
The Royal Command hit them like a physical blow.
They froze.
Just for a second.
But that was all I needed.
I slammed into them, claws tearing, teeth ripping, and I killed three before they could react.
The other three scrambled back, regrouping, and—
*Darius?*
*Here, Mama.* His mental voice was calm. Too calm. *I've got this.*
*Darius, stay back—*
*No.* The safe room door burst open—not broken from the outside, but pushed from the inside—and my son stepped out.
Violet-gold eyes burning.
Power radiating from him in waves.
*Darius,* I started toward him. *Sweetie, you need to—*
*They want to experiment on me.* Darius's mental voice was cold. *On us. On Felix and Lucian and me. They want to cut us open. Study us. Figure out how to—**
*I know.* I grabbed him, pulled him behind me. *Which is why you need to hide. Let me handle this.*
*No.* Darius moved around me. *I'm done hiding. I'm done being protected. I'm done being the victim.*
*Darius, you're three years old—*
*I'm Lycan royalty.* My son looked up at me, and for the first time, I saw something in his eyes that scared me.
Something ancient.
Something powerful.
Something not entirely child.
*I can end this,* he said. *Let me.*
*Darius, no—*
*Yes.*
He raised his small hands and—
And the world dissolved into light.
***
I don't know how long it lasted.
Seconds? Minutes? Hours?
Time stopped meaning anything.
All I knew was power.
Darius's power. Amplified. Projected. Unleashed.
When it faded, the three remaining hunters were on the ground.
Not dead.
Unconscious.
Their minds... gone. Wiped clean. Empty.
*Darius?* I whispered.
My son collapsed.
I caught him before he hit the ground.
*Sweetie?* Darius? Can you hear me?*
*Tired,* was all he managed. *So... tired...*
I looked toward the main battle, where Selene was still holding—barely—against the remaining hunters.
*I've got him,* Astrid sent, appearing in the doorway. *You go. Finish this.*
*Is he—*
*He'll be fine.* Astrid took Darius from me. *Exhausted. Drained. But he'll recover. Go. Before Selene falls.*
*GO.*
I turned back to the main battle, shifted, and—
*RAGE.*
Pure, blinding rage.
These monsters. These terrorists. These hunters who'd come for my children. Who'd tried to take my sons. Who'd wanted to experiment on—
I reached for the Lycan network.
For everything Selene had taught me.
For the power she'd said I needed to access fully.
For the—
*I DON'T CARE,* I snarled at the power. *I DON'T CARE WHAT IT DOES TO ME. JUST GIVE ME STRENGTH TO END THIS.*
The power answered.
It flooded into me—through every cell, every nerve, every fiber of my being. It burned. It transformed. It—
I wasn't Elena anymore.
Wasn't the Lycan Queen.
Wasn't anything I could name.
Just power. Pure. Infinite. Destroying.
I attacked.
Not as a fighter. Not as a warrior.
As a force of nature.
I tore through the hunters like they were paper. Silver armor shredded. Enchanted weapons melted. Their minds—
I didn't kill them.
I broke them.
Took their will to fight. Their desire to hunt. Their belief in their cause.
Stripped it away and left them empty.
When the last hunter fell, I stood alone in the center of the battlefield.
Surrounded by unconscious enemies.
Power still humming through me, demanding more. Wanting more.
*Easy,* Selene's weak mental voice came through. *Easy, Elena. You need to stop. You need to—*
*I CAN'T.*
*You have to.* Selene struggled to sit up. *The power... it's consuming you. If you don't let go—*
*I'LL END THEM ALL.*
*No.* Selene's mental voice firmed. *You won't. Because that's not who you are. That's not what Maria raised you to be. That's not—*
*MAMA?*
Felix's small voice cut through the haze.
*Mama, stop. You're scaring me.*
I froze.
The power surged, demanding I continue. Demanding I destroy. Demanding I—
*Felix.*
*I'm here, Mama. Right here.* My son's mental voice was terrified. *Please come back. Please—*
*I'm trying.*
*Let it go,* Selene urged. *Just... let go.*
I tried.
Tried to release the power. To stop drawing from the network. To come back to myself.
But it wouldn't let go.
*It's too strong,* I realized. *I can't—*
*Yes you can.* Astrid's mental voice joined in. *You're not a monster, Elena. You're a mother. And you're stronger than this.*
*Mama,* Lucian added. *You taught me. You said that being brave means being scared and doing it anyway. Well... you can do this. Even if you're scared. Even if it's hard. You can let go.*
*We believe in you,* all three children sent together. *We know you. We love you. We—*
*I love you too.*
The power fought back.
Surged, raged, demanded—
*No.*
I pushed back.
Not with strength.
With love.
With the knowledge of what mattered. Who mattered. Why I was fighting in the first place.
*I am not my power,* I said aloud, speaking to the network, to the hunters, to everything. *I am Elena. I am a mother. I am a mate. I am—*
*I am home.*
The power released me.
I collapsed.
Dimly, I heard running. Felt arms catching me. Kael's scent—pine and rain and MATE—
*You're here,* I whispered. *How are you here?*
*We felt the power surge,* Kael said aloud, his mental voice terrified. *The entire pack felt it. We came as fast as we could.*
*You came.*
*Of course I came.* Kael gathered me into his arms. *I'll always come for you. Always.*
*I missed you.*
*I was only gone for a day.*
*It felt longer.*
*For me too.* Kael kissed my forehead. *For me too.*
I looked around.
Selene was being tended to by healers. The hunters were all unconscious—captured, not killed. My children were safe, gathered around Astrid.
*We won?* I asked Kael.
*We won.* He squeezed me tight. *But the war's just beginning, Elena. The Inquisition sent fifty. They have thousands. This was just a probing attack. A test.*
*They wanted to see what I could do.*
*And now they know.* Kael's mental voice was grim. *Which means the real attack is coming. And soon.*
*Then we'll be ready.*
*We?*
*We.* I looked at my pack, my family, my children. *We fight together. We protect together. We survive together.*
*Together.*
*Together.*
And as Kael helped me stand, as my children ran to me, as Selene nodded approval from where she lay—I felt something settle into place.
Not just power.
Not just resolve.
Purpose.
I was going to end this war.
Whatever it took.
