Chapter 18 - The Alliance and The Answer

Selene woke three days later.

I was sitting by her bed, watching her breathe, when her eyes finally fluttered open.

Violet-gold. Confused. Frightened.

*Who—* Her voice was a rasp. *Where—*

*You're safe.* I took her hand. *You're in the ancestral lands. You were poisoned. The Inquisition—*

*I remember.* Selene tried to sit up, collapsed back against the pillows. *The battle. The hunters. The dart—*

*You're going to be okay.* I helped her adjust the pillows. *Rowan healed you. Flushed the poison. But you need rest. Lots of rest.*

*Rowan?* Selene frowned. *The witch? Astrid's... lover?*

*Ex-lover,* I corrected. *But yes. She owed Astrid a life debt. She paid it by saving you.*

*Huh.* Selene's lips quirked. *Astrid never mentioned that part.*

*It was complicated.*

*It always is.* Selene studied me. *And you? How are you?*

*Me?* I was surprised by the question. *I'm fine. The power surge... I came back from it. The children are safe. Kael—*

*No.* Selene cut me off gently. *I mean... how are you really? After everything? The rejection. The return. The battle. The—*

*The power?*

*All of it.*

*Thoughtful.*

*Let me guess,* Selene said quietly. *You're tired. You're scared. You're wondering how much more you can take before you break.*

*Something like that.*

*You won't break.* Selene squeezed my hand. *You're stronger than you think. Not just because of your power. Because of your heart. Your ability to love. To forgive. To—*

*To keep going.*

*Exactly.*

*Selene?* I asked the question that had been bothering me. *Rowan said you might lose memories. From the poison. Is there... is there anything you don't remember?*

Selene was silent for a long moment.

*I don't know,* she said finally. *I remember... pieces. The battle. The poison. The healing. But there are gaps. Blanks. Things I should remember but don't.*

*Like what?*

*Like the Inquisition's leadership.* Selene's brow furrowed. *I know there's something important. Something about who's leading them now. But every time I try to focus on it... it slips away.*

*That's okay.* I squeezed her hand back. *It'll come back. Eventually. In the meantime—*

*In the meantime,* Selene interrupted, *we need to talk about Rowan's proposal.*

*The alliance?*

*The alliance.* Selene struggled to sit up again. *It's the only way, Elena. The Inquisition is too strong for any one group to face alone. We need to unite. All supernatural beings. Against them.*

*Even vampires?* I made a face. *Rowan mentioned them. I've heard stories. They're not exactly... friendly.*

*Some are.* Selene's expression was serious. *There are three major vampire clans. The Crimson Valley Clan. The Shadow Falls Clan. And the Northern Ice Clan.*

*And which ones would ally with us?*

*The Northern Ice Clan, possibly.* Selene thought for a moment. *Their leader, Queen Valerica, lost her mate to the Inquisition a century ago. She's been seeking revenge ever since.*

*So she might help?*

*If we approach her right.* Selene nodded slowly. *If we offer her something she wants. Information. Resources. A chance to hurt the Inquisition.*

*And if she says no?*

*Then we try the Shadow Falls Clan.* Selene listed them. *Their leader, King Marius, is... pragmatic. He'll ally if it benefits his clan.*

*And Crimson Valley?*

*Ruled by Queen Lilith.* Selene's mental voice dropped. *She won't help. She believes in vampire superiority. Thinks other supernatural beings are inferior. Not worth allying with.*

*So we have two maybe-allies and one definite no.*

*Better than nothing.*

*True.* I stood. *So when do we leave?*

*Not you.* Selene shook her head. *You need to stay here. Recover. Train. Protect your children.*

*But—*

*I'll go.* Astrid appeared in the doorway. *With Rowan. We'll approach the vampires. Feel them out. See if they're willing to talk.*

*You just got back,* I protested. *From the spirit paths. You need rest too.*

*I'm fine.* Astrid moved into the room. *And this is important. More important than my rest.*

*I don't want you to go alone.*

*I won't be alone.* Astrid nodded toward Rowan, who stood behind her. *Rowan knows the vampire territories. She knows the protocols. She can—*

*Get us killed if we're not careful,* Rowan finished. *But yes. I know how to approach them. How to ask. What to offer.*

*What do we have to offer?* I challenged her. *Besides not being the Inquisition?*

*Information,* Rowan said. *About the Inquisition's new weapons. Their tactics. Their weaknesses.*

*We know their weaknesses?*

*Some.* Rowan came closer. *I've been tracking them for years. Studying them. Learning their patterns. And I know something about their leader that might interest the vampires.*

*What leader?*

*That's the thing.* Rowan's expression was grim. *No one knows who's really in charge. The Inquisition presents a public face—a Grand Inquisitor, a council of cardinals. But the real power... the real leader operates from the shadows. Someone new. Someone dangerous.*

*Who?*

*That's what I'm trying to find out.* Rowan sighed. *Every time I get close, the trail goes cold. People disappear. Evidence vanishes. It's like they're being protected by something... something beyond normal magic.*

*Beyond normal magic?*

*Old magic.* Rowan's mental voice dropped. *Ancient. Forbidden. The kind that hasn't been seen in centuries. The kind that—*

*The kind that destroyed the Lycans the first time,* Selene finished.

*Yes.*

I thought about that. About what that meant. About what we were really facing.

*Okay,* I said finally. *Astrid and Rowan go to the vampires. Feel them out. See if they'll ally. In the meantime—*

*In the meantime,* Selene interrupted, *you train. Harder. More intensively. You tapped into the full network during the battle. You need to learn to control it. To use it without losing yourself.*

*Okay.* I nodded. *I'll train.*

*And the children?* Kael asked from the doorway. *What do they do?*

*Darius trains with me,* Selene said. *His powers are manifesting early. Too early. He needs guidance. Control.*

*And Felix?* I looked at my firstborn, who was peering around Kael's legs.

*Felix trains with you.* Selene smiled. *He has your strength. Your fighting spirit. He needs to learn how to use it.*

*And Lucian?*

*Lucian...* Selene's expression turned thoughtful. *Lucian needs something different. His powers were forced. Corrupted. He needs... healing. Retraining. Rebuilding.*

*I can work with him,* Astrid volunteered. *When I get back. In the meantime...*

*In the meantime,* Kael said, *he can train with the pack warriors. Learn discipline. Structure. How to fight as part of a unit instead of a weapon.*

*Okay.* I looked around at everyone—my family, my pack, my allies. *This is it, isn't it? This is the war?*

*This is the beginning,* Selene corrected me. *The first stage. There will be more battles. More losses. More—*

*More everything.*

*Yes.* Selene squeezed my hand. *But we'll face it together. All of us. As a family. As a pack. As—*

*As an alliance.*

*As an alliance.*

*Astrid and Rowan left the next day.*

I watched them go from the training grounds, feeling both anxious and relieved.

*They'll be okay,* Kael said, wrapping his arm around my waist.

*How do you know?*

*Because Astrid is the most capable person I've ever met.* Kael kissed my temple. *And Rowan... Rowan may be a witch, but she's on our side. She'll get the job done.*

*I hope so.*

*They will.*

*Training time?* I asked, looking at Selene, who was watching from the doorway.

*Training time.* Selene nodded toward the children. *Bring them. We start today.*

*Today.*

*Today.*

***

Training changed after that.

More intense. More focused. More... everything.

Selene taught me how to access the Lycan network without losing myself. How to draw power without drowning in it. How to use it for specific purposes—healing, shielding, attacking—without letting it use me.

It wasn't easy.

There were days I wanted to quit. Days I thought I'd never get it. Days I lay on the training grounds, exhausted, weeping, feeling like I'd never be strong enough.

*You're doing fine,* Selene would say, extending a hand to help me up. *This takes years to master. You've been at it for weeks. You're ahead of schedule.*

*I don't feel ahead of schedule.*

*Feelings aren't facts.* Selene would pull me to my feet. *Again. Show me what you learned.*

*Again.*

And I'd try again.

And again.

And again.

Meanwhile, Darius trained with Selene separately.

*He's powerful,* she told me one evening, watching him practice telekinesis—moving rocks, branches, eventually entire trees with his mind. *More powerful than any Lycan I've ever seen. But he lacks control.*

*He's four,* I reminded her. *He just turned four. Give him time.*

*I'm not criticizing him.* Selene's mental voice was gentle. *I'm observing. His powers are growing faster than his ability to handle them. We need to stay ahead of it. Or—*

*Or what?*

*Or he'll overwhelm himself.* Selene's expression was grim. *His mind could break under the strain. The power could consume him. He could—*

*He won't.* I spoke with absolute certainty. *Because I won't let that happen. Neither will you. Neither will anyone here.*

*You're a good mother, Elena.*

*I'm trying.*

*You're succeeding.*

I hoped she was right.

Felix trained with me and Kael.

He was a natural fighter—inherited his father's warrior instincts, his mother's strength. At four years old, he could already hold his own against adult wolves in human form. In wolf form, he was unstoppable.

*He's going to be a great Alpha,* Kael said proudly, watching Felix spar with Reese.

*If he wants to be,* I corrected. *He might choose something else. Something different. We have to let him choose.*

*I know.* Kael wrapped his arm around me. *But I can still be proud. Can't I?*

*You can.* I leaned into him. *You can.*

And Lucian...

Lucian struggled at first.

The training at Blackwood's hands had left scars—not just physical, but mental. Emotional. He flinched when someone raised their voice. Froze when given commands. Had panic attacks when things moved too fast.

*We need to be patient,* I told Kael after one particularly bad session. *He's not like the other children. He's—*

*He's a survivor,* Kael finished. *And survivors have different needs. We'll adapt.*

*We will.*

So we adapted.

Slower pacing. More encouragement. Less pressure. Lots of positive reinforcement.

And slowly, Lucian began to heal.

Began to trust. To laugh. To play.

To be a child.

*He's doing better,* Astrid reported when she and Rowan returned two weeks later. *Much better than when we left.*

*He is.* I watched Lucian playing tag with Felix and Darius, actually smiling. *It helps that he has friends now. Other children who understand what he's been through. What he is.*

*Children are resilient,* Astrid agreed. *More resilient than adults give them credit for.*

*Did you find the vampires?* I asked, changing the subject. *Any willing to talk?*

*Two.* Rowan stepped forward. *Queen Valerica of the Northern Ice Clan. And King Marius of the Shadow Falls Clan.*

*Both of them?* I was surprised. *That's... better than we hoped.*

*They remember the last purge,* Rowan said. *They remember what the Inquisition did to their kind. The slaughter. The near-extinction. They're willing to consider an alliance.*

*Consider?*

*They want to meet you.* Astrid explained. *The Lycan Queen. In person. They want to see if you're worth following into war.*

*When?*

*Two weeks.* Rowan's mental voice was practical. *That gives us time to prepare. To gather our forces. To—*

*To get ready.*

*Exactly.*

I looked at Kael, who nodded.

*We'll be ready,* he said. *I promise.*

*Good.* Astrid squeezed my shoulder. *Because this alliance... it's the only way we win. The only way we survive.*

*I know.*

*Do you?* Astrid studied me. *Because this means fighting alongside vampires. Creatures who drink blood. Who hunt humans. Who—*

*Who are being hunted too,* I cut her off. *Who are facing the same enemy we are. Who need allies just as much as we do.*

*You've come a long way,* Astrid said quietly. *From the servant girl who was scared of her own shadow.*

*I'm still scared,* I admitted. *Every day. I'm terrified of what's coming. Of what I might have to do. Of—*

*But you do it anyway.*

*I have to.*

*No you don't.* Astrid hugged me. *You choose to. There's a difference.*

*I suppose there is.*

*There is.*

*Two weeks,* I said finally. *Then we meet the vampire queens and kings. Then we form this alliance. Then we—*

*Then we end this,* Kael finished. *Once and for all.*

*Once and for all.*

*Once and for all.*

And for the first time since this war began, I actually believed it.

We could win.

We would win.

Because we weren't alone anymore.

We had each other.

We had allies.

We had...

*Family,* Darius sent, appearing beside me, taking my hand. *We have family.*

*Yes we do, sweetie.* I squeezed his hand. *Yes we do.*

*And we're going to win.*

*We are.*

*Definitely.*

*Definitely.*

And outside, the moon rose—full and bright—and I could feel it pulling at my blood, at my power, at the very core of who I was.

I was the Lycan Queen.

And for the first time, I felt ready.

Really ready.

To face whatever came next.
