Chapter 22 - The Battle and The Betrayal

Three days.

Three days of frantic preparation. Of traps set. Of plans made. Of allies arriving—more witches, more vampires, even a few shifters from other packs who'd heard about the alliance and wanted in.

*We're not turning away help,* I decided when Kael questioned the new arrivals. *Every fighter counts. Every ally matters.*

*But can we trust them?* Kael asked quietly. *We don't know these packs. These shifters. They could be—*

*They could be spies,* I acknowledged. *But Rowan's witches are screening everyone. Magical truth spells. Mental scans. If someone's a traitor, they'll know.*

*And if they miss someone?*

*Then we deal with it.* I met Kael's eyes. *Like we deal with everything. Together.*

*Together.*

*Together.*

The poison from the dagger slowed me down.

Not life-threatening—Rowan had neutralized most of it—but I was tired. Weaker than I should be. Healing slower than normal.

*You should rest,* Selene told me for the hundredth time. *The battle's coming. You need to be at full strength.*

*I can't rest.* I shook off her concern. *There's too much to do. Plans to finalize. Traps to set. Strategies to—*

*Delegate,* Astrid cut in. *You're not alone in this, Elena. You have allies. A mate. A pack. Let us help.*

*I don't want to put anyone at risk.*

*They're already at risk,* Selene countered. *The Inquisition is coming for everyone. Not just you. Not just Lycans. All supernatural beings. We're all targets.*

*I know.* I sighed. *I know. It's just...*

*Hard?* Astrid suggested.

*Terrifying.*

*Yes.* I admitted it. *I'm terrified. That I'll fail. That I won't be strong enough. That I'll get everyone killed. That—*

*That you'll disappoint your children,* Selene finished quietly.

*That too.*

*You won't.* Astrid hugged me. *You're stronger than you think. Braver than you know. And you're not doing this alone.*

*I'm starting to believe that.*

*Good.* Astrid pulled back. *Now, go. Spend time with your children. Kael can handle the final preparations.*

*Are you sure?*

*I'm sure.* Astrid smiled. *Go. Be a mother for a while. The warrior can wait.*

*The warrior can wait.*

*The warrior can wait.*

I found the children in the nursery, playing with Lucian—training, really, but they made it look like play. Felix was teaching Lucian hand-to-hand combat. Darius was using telekinesis to levitate small objects.

*Mama!* Felix spotted me first and ran over, shifting mid-stride from wolf to human. *You're back!*

*I'm back.* I scooped him up. *Did you miss me?*

*Yes.* Felix hugged me tight. *Don't go away again.*

*I'll try not to.*

*Try?* Darius appeared beside me, taking my hand. *Mama, you're hurt.*

*I'm—*

*Don't lie to me.* Darius's violet-gold eyes bore into mine. *I can feel it. The poison. It's... it's still there. In your blood. Not active, but—*

*Dormant.* I knelt down to his level. *It's okay, sweetie. I'm dealing with it. Rowan gave me something to help. I just need to rest.*

*You promise?*

*I promise.*

*Good.* Darius hugged me. *Because I don't want you to die.*

*I don't plan on dying.* I kissed his forehead. *I plan on living. For a long, long time. With you. And Felix. And Lucian. And—*

*And Papa?* Felix asked.

*And Papa,* I agreed. *Yes.*

*Good.* Felix nodded seriously. *Because Papa says he's not going anywhere either. That he's going to stay and be our father and—*

*And make up for lost time,* I finished.

*Yes.*

*Yes.*

*You've been talking to Kael?* I asked Felix.

*Uh-huh.* Felix squirmed until I put him down. *He comes to visit. When you're busy. Training with the grownups. He tells us stories. About when he was little. About when he first met you. About—*

*About when he made a mistake,* I said quietly.

*He says he messed up,* Felix agreed. *That he chose wrong. That he's sorry. And that he's going to spend forever fixing it.*

*That sounds like Kael.*

*Is that enough?* Lucian spoke up from where he'd been practicing combat moves with Felix. *Is being sorry enough?*

*I don't know,* I said honestly. *But he's trying. And that matters. Effort matters. The attempt to make things right—*

*It counts,* Lucian finished.

*It counts.*

*It counts.*

I spent the afternoon with my children—playing, training, just being present. As the sun set, Kael joined us, and the five of us sat together as a family.

*I'm scared,* Felix admitted suddenly. *About the battle. About the bad people coming. About—*

*I know,* Kael pulled him onto his lap. *I'm scared too.*

*You are?* Felix seemed surprised. *But you're big. And strong. And you fight all the time.*

*Being scared doesn't mean you're not brave,* Kael explained. *Bravery is being scared and doing it anyway. Being terrified and fighting anyway. Being—*

*Being strong anyway,* Darius finished.

*Exactly.* Kael kissed the top of Felix's head. *And you know what?*

*What?*

*You're already brave.* Kael hugged him tight. *All of you. You're the bravest children I know.*

*Even Lucian?* Felix asked.

*Especially Lucian.* Kael looked at my adopted son. *Because he's fighting. Against what was done to him. Against the training. Against—*

*Against the monster,* Lucian said quietly. *I don't want to be a monster anymore.*

*You're not,* I told him firmly. *You never were. You were a victim. Now you're a survivor. And a fighter. And—*

*And part of the family,* Felix added, hugging Lucian.

*Part of the family.*

*Part of the family.*

*Bedtime,* I announced as the moon rose. *Big day tomorrow.*

*Can't we stay up?* Felix protested. *Just a little longer?*

*No.* I stood. *You need sleep. I need sleep. We all need—*

*To be ready,* Darius finished.

*To be ready.*

*To be ready.*

I tucked them in—Felix first, then Darius, then Lucian in his own small bed. Kissed each forehead, whispered *I love you,* and—

*Mama?* Darius caught my hand before I could leave. *Be careful tomorrow. Please?*

*I will,* I promised. *I'll be careful.*

*Don't do anything stupid,* he said solemnly.

*I'll try not to.*

*Okay.* Darius released my hand. *Love you, Mama.*

*Love you too, sweetie.*

*Love you too.*

I stepped out of the nursery... and found Kael waiting for me.

*They're amazing,* he said quietly. *Your children. Our children.*

*They are.* I leaned against him, exhausted suddenly. *I'm so tired, Kael. I don't know if I can do this. The battle. The leadership. The—*

*You don't have to do it alone.* Kael wrapped his arms around me. *I'm here. The pack is here. The alliance is here. You have support, Elena. You just have to—*

*Let people in.*

*Let people in.*

*Let people in.*

*I'm trying,* I said quietly. *It's just... hard. After everything. After the rejection. After being alone for so long. It's hard to remember that I'm not anymore.*

*You're not alone.* Kael rested his forehead against mine. *You'll never be alone again. I promise. Even if you never fully forgive me. Even if we never mate again. Even if—*

*I'm working on it,* I cut him off. *The forgiveness thing. The trust thing. It's not... it's not as simple as flipping a switch.*

*I know.* Kael's mental voice was gentle. *I'm not asking for it to be simple. I'm just asking for the chance. For the opportunity to earn it. To prove that I'm not the boy who rejected you anymore.*

*You're not,* I said firmly. *That boy is gone. You're someone else now. Someone better.*

*Am I?*

*Yes.* I pulled back slightly to look at him. *You're a father. A mate who's learning. A leader who listens. You're—*

*Still flawed,* Kael cut in. *Still make mistakes. Still—*

*Human.* I kissed him. *And that's okay. I don't need perfection. I just need effort. Progress. The attempt to be better.*

*I can do that.* Kael kissed me back. *I can definitely do that.*

*Good.* I yawned. *Now. Sleep. Because tomorrow—*

*Tomorrow we fight.*

*Tomorrow we fight.*

*Tomorrow we fight.*

***

The battle began at dawn.

Not with a warning. Not with a challenge.

With screams.

*AMBUSH.* I was out of bed and shifting before the scream finished—Lycan form exploding outward, claws extended, ready to—

*ELENA,* Kael sent urgently. *THEY'RE NOT ATTACKING THE MAIN GATES. THEY'RE ATTACKING THE—*

*NURSERY.*

I ran.

Faster than I'd ever moved in my life. Through the main hall, down the corridor, toward the nursery building—

And stopped.

Because the nursery was surrounded.

Not by Inquisition soldiers.

By... by witches.

Rowan's witches.

*What are you DOING?* I snarled, moving between them and the nursery door. *ROWAN. EXPLAIN.*

*We're protecting the children,* one of the witches said—her second-in-command, a woman named Brenna. *Rowan's orders.*

*From what?* I demanded. *There's no threat here. The wards would have—*

*The wards are down,* Brenna said quietly. *Someone disabled them. From inside.*

*What?* I accessed the network, reached for the protective spells Selene had placed around the nursery, and—

*Gone.*

*Not just disabled,* I realized. *Sabotaged.*

*How?* Kael caught up with me, shifted and ready.

*Doesn't matter.* I looked at Brenna. *When did Rowan give this order?*

*Last night.* Brenna's mental voice was tense. *She said there was a threat. A traitor. Someone working with the Inquisition. She didn't say who, just—*

*Just to protect the children.*

*Exactly.*

I heard the main battle begin outside—the sounds of fighting, of spells being cast, of—

*They're distracting us,* I realized. *The attack on the main gates is just a diversion. The real threat is here.*

*Here where?*

*I don't know.* I strained my senses, reached for the Lycan network, trying to feel—*

*There.*

In the shadows behind the nursery.

*AMBUSH FROM BEHIND.*

I spun, claws extended, and—

*Faced the Grand Inquisitor.

Not three of them.

Just one. In black armor, face hidden, radiating power that made my skin crawl.

*You're alone,* I observed, shifting my weight, preparing to fight. *Where are your friends?*

*Waiting.* The Grand Inquisitor's voice was distorted. *For the right moment. To strike. To—*

*To betray you,* I realized suddenly. *You're not Silas. Or Hecate. Or Malachi. You're someone else.*

*Does it matter?* The Grand Inquisitor raised a hand—glowing with power, with magic, with—

*Yes.* I accessed the network, pulled power, and—

*ELENA, WAIT.*

Darius's mental voice—

*Too late.*

I lunged.

And the Grand Inquisitor dropped the illusion.

Black armor fell away.

To reveal—

*SERAPHINA.*

I froze mid-lunge.

*Surprised?* Seraphina's smile was cruel. *Did you really think I'd just fade away? Just accept exile? Just—*

*You're working with the Inquisition?* I snarled, resuming the attack.

*Working with them?* Seraphina dodged—unnaturally fast, magically enhanced. *I AM them. I've always been them.*

*What?*

*My father isn't Alpha Blackwood,* Seraphina said casually, parrying my claws with an enchanted blade. *He never was. That was just... a cover. A story we told. To hide the truth.*

*The truth?*

*That I'm Inquisition born and bred.* Seraphina attacked, forcing me back. *My "father"—the man I called Alpha Blackwood—was just a handler. A contact. Someone to give us access to Lycan territory. To Lycan secrets.*

*You used your own pack,* I said, horrified. *Your own mate—*

*Kael was never my mate.* Seraphina's lip curled. *The bond was faked. A spell. An illusion to make him think we were compatible. To give me access to Silver Moon Pack. To—*

*To the Lycan Queen.*

*Exactly.* Seraphina's eyes gleamed. *And I almost had it. Until you came back. With your brats. Your royal blood. Your—*

*You're not getting my children.*

*I don't want your children.* Seraphina slashed at me with the enchanted blade. *I want YOU. Your blood. Your power. Your—*

*My death.*

*Your cooperation.*

*Never.*

*Then I'll take it by force.*

She lunged.

And I fought.

Claws against enchanted blade. Lycan power against Inquisition magic. Ancient blood against trained hatred—

*You're strong,* Seraphina grunted, blocking a swipe that would have taken her head off. *Stronger than Blackwood said. Stronger than—*

*I'm not the same girl,* I snarled, driving her back. *The girl who crawled away three years ago. I'm the Lycan Queen. And you're—*

*In over your head.*

Seraphina vanished.

Shadow-walking.

Vampire training.

*Behind you,* Kael sent urgently.

I spun—took a hit across the ribs, enchanted blade cutting through Lycan fur, drawing blood—

*POISON,* I realized. *THE BLADE IS—*

*POISONED.*

*But Rowan healed you,* Kael reminded me, shifting to wolf form and flanking Seraphina.

*This is different,* I snarled. *Stronger. More corrupt. It's—*

*It's killing you,* Seraphina said smugly, reappearing. *I can feel it, Elena. The poison spreading. Your healing... it's not keeping up. Is it?*

*I don't need to heal fast,* I said grimly. *I just need to last long enough to kill you.*

*You're welcome to try.*

She attacked again.

Fast. Ruthless. Using every trick—the shadow-walking, the illusion spells, the enchanted weapons. Fighting like someone who'd trained for this moment for years.

*She's too strong,* I sent to Kael, taking another hit, struggling to stay on my feet. *I can't—*

*Yes you can.* Kael lunged, jaws snapping at Seraphina's throat, forcing her to dodge. *Remember who you're fighting for. Your children. Your mate. Your—*

*My family.*

*My family.*

The word hit me like a physical blow.

My family.

Seraphina had threatened them. Hunted them. Tried to kill them.

She wasn't getting another chance.

*KAEL,* I sent urgently. *THE NETWORK. I NEED YOU TO CONNECT TO ME. FULLY. COMPLETELY.*

*WHAT? WHY?*

*I NEED EVERYTHING YOU HAVE.* I dodged another strike from Seraphina. *EVERY BIT OF POWER. STRENGTH. WILL. I NEED—*

*YOU'VE GOT IT.*

I felt Kael's essence flow into mine—his love, his strength, his devotion, his—

*MATE MATE MATE MATE MATE.*

The broken bond between us flared to life.

Not mended. Not healed.

But enough.

Enough.

I accessed the Lycan network—not just my connection to it, but Kael's too. Combined. Amplified. Multiplied by—

*SERAPHINA.*

I used the Royal Voice. Amplified by the network. By Kael's presence. By everything.

*FREEZE.*

She didn't just stop.

She collapsed.

Like her muscles had turned to stone. Like her will had been shattered. Like—

*What are you doing?* she gasped. *I can't—*

*You're done,* I said grimly. *You're finished. You're—*

*ELENA, LOOK OUT.*

I turned too late.

A dagger—enchanted, poisoned, deadly—flying through the air.

Not from Seraphina.

From behind me.

From—

*BRENNA.*

The dagger hit its mark.

My chest.

Right over my heart.

I collapsed.

*ELENA.* Kael was there instantly, shifting back to human, trying to stem the blood. *ELENA, STAY WITH ME. ROWAN. ROWAN, WE NEED HEALING. NOW.*

*I'm trying,* Rowan's mental voice was frantic. *But the poison... it's the same as before. Corrupted. Magical. It's—*

*It's killing her,* Brenna said calmly, walking toward us. *And that was the point.*

*You?* Kael snarled, shifting again, ready to attack. *You're the traitor.*

*Of course I am.* Brenna smiled. *Did you really think we'd ally with Lycans? With wolves? With—*

*Monsters?* I whispered, the world starting to dim. *Is that what you think we are?*

*I know what you are.* Brenna crouched over me. *Abominations. Affronts to nature. And you... you're the worst. The Lycan Queen. The embodiment of everything we're trying to eradicate.*

*So you poisoned me.*

*I poisoned you.* Brenna's mental voice was satisfied. *And I poisoned your mate too—through the bond. The dagger... it's designed to kill both. To end the Lycan bloodline once and for all.*

*NO.* Kael howled, a sound of pure grief. *NO. ELENA. ELENA, STAY WITH ME. PLEASE. DON'T—*

*I'm sorry,* I whispered, my vision tunneling. *I'm so sorry, Kael. I tried. I wanted—*

*DON'T.* Kael grabbed my hands. *DON'T LEAVE ME. NOT NOW. NOT WHEN WE JUST FOUND EACH OTHER AGAIN. NOT WHEN—*

*Tell them,* I managed. *Tell the children. That I love them. That I'm proud. That—*

*I will.* Kael's voice broke. *I will. I promise. Just—*

*Don't go.*

*Trying.*

The world faded.

The pain receded.

And I felt... peace.

*ELENA.*

A voice. Not Kael's. Not the children's.

*SELene?*

*Don't let go.* Selene's mental voice was urgent. *The poison... it's in your heart. In your blood. But you can fight it. You can—*

*How?*

*The network.* Selene's mental voice firmed. *Use it. All of it. Everything you've learned. Everything you are. Purge yourself. Burn it out. Or—*

*Or die?*

*Yes.*

*Then I don't have a choice.*

*No.* Selene's mental voice softened. *You don't. Fight, Elena. Fight for your children. For Kael. For—*

*For everyone.*

*For everyone.*

I reached for the Lycan network—for everything, everyone, all the power flowing through the earth and the moon and the stars—

And I burned.

The poison screamed.

My blood boiled.

My heart seized.

But I didn't let go.

*I AM THE LYCAN QUEEN,* I snarled into the poison. *AND YOU DON'T GET TO KILL ME.*

*TRY US.*

The poison fought back.

But I was stronger.

Had to be stronger.

*I WILL NOT DIE TODAY.*

*You WILL.*

*I WON'T.*

I pushed. With everything I had. Everything I was. Everything I could be—

*And the poison dissolved.*

Not faded. Not retreated.

Dissolved.

Burned away by Lycan power by sheer will by—

*ELENA.* Kael's mental voice was awed. *You're... you're glowing.*

*What?*

I opened my eyes.

My arms—where the poison had entered—were glowing. Violet-gold light streaming from my skin, from my veins, from my very cells—

*You're purging it,* Selene said wonderingly. *Not just fighting it. Burning it out of existence. I've never seen—*

*Neither have I.*

I sat up.

The hole in my chest was still there, still bleeding, but—

*Healing.* I looked at Kael. *The Lycan healing... it's working again. The poison is gone.*

*Gone?* Brenna had backed away, was looking at me with terrified eyes. *That's not possible. The poison was—*

*Defeated.* I stood, swaying slightly. *By me.*

*What are you?* Brenna whispered.

*I told you.* I shifted—Lycan form exploding outward, but this time different. Brighter. Stronger. More. *I'm the Lycan Queen.*

*And I'm done playing nice.*

I lunged.

Brenna didn't have time to scream.

Didn't have time to beg.

Didn't have time to—

*Regret anything.*

Before she hit the ground, she was dead.

I turned to Seraphina.

Still frozen. Still trapped by the Royal Command.

*Your turn.*

*ELENA, NO.* Kael's mental voice stopped me. *DON'T. YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS.*

*She tried to kill our children.* I growled.

*I know.* Kael moved to my side. *But killing her... that's too easy. That's what the Inquisition would do. What they've always done. We're better than that.*

*Are we?*

*We need to be.* Kael rested his hand on my shoulder. *For the children. For their sake. For—*

*For the future.*

*For the future.*

I nodded slowly.

*You're right.*

*I usually am.*

*Don't push it.*

*I won't.*

I turned to Seraphina.

*You're under arrest,* I said formally. *For conspiracy. For attempted murder. For treason against the alliance. For—*

*Everything.*

*Everything.*

The battle outside was still raging— the main force had broken through, was fighting the Inquisition's army. Valerica, Marius, Rowan— everyone was engaged.

But here, in the shadow of the nursery...

We'd won.

Small victory.

But victory.

*We need to join the fight,* Kael said.

*Yes.*

*Together.*

*Together.*

*Together.*

And as we ran toward the main battle, I felt something settle into place.

Not just power.

Purpose.

I was going to end this war.

Whatever it took.
