School was literally becoming unbearable for Paige. She hasn't had any peace for the last months. Hazel socially tortured her making her leave the Mockingbirds. She was doing everything possible for her to leave the school and hopefully Jamie's life. The only places she could have peace was in class and when she was with Jamie.
"So who is your Spring dance date this time around?" Leon said pulling him out of his reverie.
"I don't know. Maybe this time I will go alone" he said distressed.
He knew what he was saying wasn't true but he had to.
"You can ask Paige" Phil said walking in on them.
"Paige? What makes you think I would do that?" he said pretending he had no interest in what they were saying.
"There are many reasons but I will give you a few. She's currently the hottest girl in school and still single which buffles me. She is your vice and besides no one has asked her yet" Cyrus cut in as the other boys teased.
"What makes you think she would go with me?" Paige was walking in when he said it and she heard it.
She just stood behind the door listening in silence.
"Well, it is obvious she is into you and you my brother are head over heels for her. I promise if you don't ask her I will gladly take your place" Leon said then she walked in without knocking.
"Speak of the angel" Phil whispered.
"Shouldn't it be the devil?" Leon asked, acting a little bit surprised.
"He was also an angel bro" Phil replied making them laugh.
"I think we will be leaving now see you dream boats on the flip" he added as they stepped out of the room staring at Paige mischievouly. She head all they said and was really happy Jamie liked her. She liked him too but was just waiting for him to make the move which was really slow.
"Hi, are those the plans for the Spring dance event?" he asked to divert her attention from him as she was watching him like an eagle waiting for him to say something.
She was really disappointed when he said nothing about the date.
"Yes they are and I need you to go over them so we can make some changes if necessary" she said simply.
She avoided looking at him when she handed him the file.
"Paige, I was wondering?" he said all of a sudden and it brought something to life in her. She had the feeling their case wasn't helpless yet. She remained silent looking at him waiting for the sentence he started to be completed.
"I was wondering if you would like to go with me as my date. I mean to the event" he said mumbling.
"Yes, I would love to go with you" she replied and it was the best thing he had heard so far in months.
He had waited for long and he was glad he was finally getting things out. She smiled at him and left the office. What seemed to be an impossible relationship was coming true and they were both up for the run. Hazel eventually heard the news since Marie couldn't keep her mouth shut about it. She had been waiting for a while hoping the two lovebirds would come together. Everyone surprisingly seem to have noticed their affection towards each other except themselves since they were in constant denial.
"So you are now hooking up with that girl. I thought you said there was nothing between you two" Hazel said when he entered the room.
Their parents weren't around and she was wearing the same clothes as the first time they had their moment.
"What are you doing in my room?" he said avoiding the other conversation.
"Since when did it become a problem and answer my question" she replied still sitting on the bed.
He just stood in the middle of the room staring at her. He didn't know what to say or how to explain anything because he didn't even understand what was going on himself. "It is a problem when I'm not aware of it and I don't have anything to do with her. I'm just going with her as my date" he explained.
She stood up gently and closed the distance between them. The air was becoming warmer like their first time and they could feel it. "Prove it to me" she said.
She leaned forward trying to kiss him but he took a few steps back. He didn't know why he did it but it felt good. Something was in control of him and at that moment he liked it. "You really meant it when you said it is over?" she asked hoping to hear another answer other than the obvious.
"Yes, you seem oblivious to a clear situation and I know about all that you have been doing to Paige and I want you to stop it" he said pleading.
"I will gladly stop if you tell me you don't feel anything for her" she said knowing the answer already.
He stood there in silence. Saying he didn't have any feelings for her would be a lie. He stared at her as she walked past him.
"I thought so. Keep it in your thick skull that if I can't have you, nobody will. Especially not Paige" she said at the door.
He knew this was a threat. Hazel was unpredictable. Not knowing the extent she would go to really scared him. He wished he could stay away from Paige but he couldn't. His whole mind and body would not let him. Jamie stood in front of the school waiting for his date who seemed to be late. He saw Hazel walk past him with Leon who seemed very happy. He knew she was up to something but he couldn't really get his hands on what it was. Just when he was lost in thoughts the black car stopped in front of him and out of it came his magic. Paige looked very different in the black dress which fit her perfectly. He could hear the sound of her steps from afar. She looked splendid and her smile gave the extra touch. For once he felt his mouth had dropped open. He was too lost that he couldn't even hear her say 'Hi'.
"Shall we?" she asked noticing he was lost. Having the thought of Jamie lost thinking of her made her happy. It added a little bit of confidence. All eyes seemed to have turned to them as they entered. The whisper was about the captivating couple who had just entered the building. Just then Paige's parents walked to them.
"Jamie this are my parents" she introduced. "Nice to meet you Mr and Mrs Bennett" he said as he shook hands with her mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
Her father was reluctant for a while before bringing his hands. He was a bit surprised but he took him for the overprotective father. They turned back and left. Everything seemed to be going on well. They went to the floor to dance. He put a hand around her waist as she had hers around his neck. They looked just like the perfect couple everyone was picturing. They turned as they saw the flash of light. It was Marie taking pictures of them. At that moment they both knew they would be on the cover of the student paper on Monday. That was very obvious since she had been waiting to get a picture of them together since they started working together. What they wished they knew was what she would be writing about them. The drive home was quiet. He drove her home since they were almost the last people to have left. He got out of the car to walk her to her door. She made it clear it wasn't necessary but he insisted. She stopped to face him when they were at the door. They stood there very close to each other holding themselves in a steady gaze.
"Goodnight" he said then turned to walk away but felt a hand on his coat turning him.
"I hope this counts between us" she said and before he could ask for clarification her lips were on his.
He didn't know how but he gave in very easily. They both knew it was where their relationship begins as their tongues intertwined. She felt a chill down her spine when he wrapped his arms around her. At that moment she felt safe from everything. She knew he would protect her. He still had his arms around her when they stopped kissing. Time was working different in their favor.
"This definitely counts to me" he said.
It was simply what she wanted to hear.
"Me too" she said then went inside.
He couldn't stop smiling as he went to his car. All he wanted was coming around and he hoped nothing will destroy it. Hazel watched from her car far away. She knew this would happen and all she wanted was to get Paige out of their lives, no matter the consequences.
