BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE
Chapter 38: The Last Journey
Three months had passed since Elara left.
Riva had learned something she never thought possible.
Waiting.
She didn't open a Gate to find her daughter.
She didn't search through thousands of possible futures.
She didn't use the old power buried inside her.
She simply waited.
And somehow...
That was harder than fighting the Void.
---
The village had changed.
The western Gate was now a meeting place.
People from different worlds crossed through every day.
Some traded food.
Some shared stories.
Some brought strange plants.
Some brought books.
Children from different worlds played together.
The world was no longer divided by fear.
It was divided only by distance.
Riva watched them from the hill.
Caelan joined her.
"You're thinking about her again."
"Every day."
"She'll come back."
"I know."
"You trust her."
Riva smiled.
"More than I trust myself."
---
Then the Gate opened.
Riva immediately stood.
Caelan reached for his sword.
But Riva stopped him.
"Wait."
Someone stepped through.
It was Nyra.
Alone.
Riva's heart dropped.
"Where's Elara?"
Nyra looked at her.
"We have a problem."
---
Riva ran toward her.
"What happened?"
Nyra looked exhausted.
"Elara found something."
"What?"
"A world that shouldn't exist."
Riva froze.
"What do you mean?"
Nyra held out her hand.
A small golden thread lay across her palm.
"This appeared when we crossed the last Gate."
Riva stared.
"I've seen that before."
Nyra nodded.
"It led us somewhere."
"Where?"
Nyra looked toward the sky.
"The first world."
---
Riva's expression changed.
"The first world was destroyed."
"I know."
"Then how can it still exist?"
Nyra shook her head.
"That's what we couldn't understand."
"Where is Elara?"
"Still there."
"Why didn't she return?"
Nyra looked away.
"Because she found someone."
"Who?"
Nyra whispered:
"You."
Riva frowned.
"Me?"
"Not you."
"Another Riva."
---
Silence.
Caelan stepped forward.
"Another version?"
Nyra nodded.
"Older."
"How old?"
Nyra looked at Riva.
"Older than the First Creator."
Riva's face went pale.
"That's impossible."
Nyra shook her head.
"That's what Elara said."
"What happened?"
"Elara tried to speak to her."
"And?"
"She knew Elara."
Riva's heart began beating faster.
"What did she say?"
Nyra answered:
'You're late.'
---
Riva looked toward the Gate.
"Open it."
Caelan grabbed her arm.
"Riva."
"She's my daughter."
"I know."
"Then I'm going."
Nyra stepped between them.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The older Riva said..."
Nyra hesitated.
"She said Elara wasn't the first person to carry the final choice."
Riva stared.
"Who was?"
Nyra looked at her.
"You."
---
The Gate opened.
Riva stepped through.
Caelan followed.
Nyra went behind them.
The world beyond was unlike anything Riva had ever seen.
There was no sun.
No moon.
No stars.
The sky was completely silver.
Mountains floated upside down.
A river flowed through the air.
At the center stood a city.
Ancient.
Silent.
Untouched.
Riva stared.
"I know this place."
Caelan looked at her.
"You've been here?"
"No."
"Then how?"
Riva touched her chest.
"I remember it."
---
They entered the city.
Every building carried the same symbol.
A circle divided into eight parts.
The Crowns.
But beneath it was another symbol.
A small golden thread.
Riva stopped.
"That wasn't part of the Crowns."
Nyra nodded.
"It's older."
"Much older."
---
They reached a massive palace.
The doors opened before they touched them.
Inside...
Elara stood in the center of the hall.
Riva ran toward her.
"Elara!"
Elara turned.
"Mother."
They hugged.
Riva held her tightly.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you come back?"
Elara looked toward the end of the hall.
"Because I found something."
Riva turned.
A woman stood there.
She looked like Riva.
But older.
Her hair was completely white.
Her eyes were tired.
She looked like someone who had lived through countless lifetimes.
Riva stared.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled.
"You."
---
Riva stepped backward.
"No."
The older woman laughed softly.
"I said the same thing."
"How?"
"You've forgotten the first beginning."
"I remember the first world."
"That's not the first beginning."
Riva looked confused.
"What is?"
The woman stepped closer.
"You weren't the first Riva."
Silence.
Caelan looked at Riva.
Nyra looked at Elara.
The older Riva continued.
"You were the second."
---
Riva's mind went blank.
"Second?"
The woman nodded.
"There was another before you."
"Who?"
"Me."
Riva stared.
"Then who created you?"
The older Riva smiled.
"No one."
"Then how?"
"I existed."
"Before creation?"
"Yes."
Riva shook her head.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It doesn't have to."
---
Elara stepped forward.
"What does this have to do with me?"
The older Riva looked at her.
"Everything."
"Why?"
"Because you are the first creation that didn't come from a creator."
Elara frowned.
"But Mother created me."
"No."
The older Riva shook her head.
"She gave you a body."
"She gave you memories."
"She gave you a beginning."
"But the thing inside you..."
She touched Elara's chest.
"...came from somewhere else."
---
Riva felt cold.
"What?"
The older Riva looked at her.
"The golden thread."
Riva stared at Elara's hand.
"The future."
"No."
The older Riva shook her head.
"The possibility."
She looked toward the ceiling.
"The ability to create something that even its creator cannot predict."
Riva whispered:
"Choice."
The older Riva smiled.
"Exactly."
---
Elara looked frightened.
"Then what am I?"
The older Riva answered:
"The end of the Creator."
Riva stepped forward.
"Don't call her that."
The older Riva looked at her.
"I'm not threatening her."
"Then explain."
"You spent thousands of years trying to create a perfect world."
"You failed."
"You created Crowns."
"You created Gates."
"You created Keepers."
"You created worlds."
"But every creation carried your fear."
She looked at Elara.
"Until her."
---
Elara's eyes filled with tears.
"Why me?"
"Because you were the first thing Riva created without fear."
Riva looked at Elara.
The older Riva continued:
"That's why you were never meant to replace her."
"You were meant to end the cycle."
---
Caelan stepped forward.
"What cycle?"
The older Riva looked at him.
"Every Creator eventually becomes afraid of their creation."
"So they create another Creator."
"That Creator becomes afraid."
"And the cycle begins
