BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE
Chapter 37: The Future Without a Name
The word remained glowing in Elara's palm.
BEGIN.
She stared at it.
Then slowly closed her fingers.
The light disappeared.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally, Caelan broke the silence.
"So..."
Elara looked at him.
"What?"
"Do you know what your future is?"
Elara smiled.
"No."
Caelan nodded.
"Good."
Riva laughed.
"That's probably the first time uncertainty has made me happy."
---
The village slowly returned to normal.
People went back to their homes.
The Gate remained closed.
The stars continued shining.
Nothing looked different.
And yet...
Everything was different.
Riva walked through the village with Elara.
Children ran past them.
A woman carried baskets of flowers.
Someone was repairing a roof.
Two old men argued over a game.
Riva stopped.
"What?"
Elara looked at her.
Riva smiled.
"Nothing."
"What?"
"I used to think the world needed something extraordinary to make it worth saving."
She looked around.
"But this..."
"This is enough."
---
Elara smiled.
"Do you regret anything?"
Riva thought carefully.
"Yes."
"Everything?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"That I spent so long believing I had to know everything."
Elara laughed.
"That sounds like you."
Riva smiled.
"It was."
"And now?"
"Now I know better."
---
That evening, Riva found Nyra sitting beside the river.
She was watching the water.
Riva sat beside her.
"You've been quiet."
Nyra smiled.
"I'm thinking."
"About what?"
"Who I am."
Riva looked at her.
"Have you figured it out?"
Nyra shook her head.
"No."
Riva laughed.
"Good."
Nyra looked surprised.
"Why is that good?"
"Because you're allowed to figure it out slowly."
Nyra looked at the river.
"I spent so long believing I was created to destroy."
Riva nodded.
"And now?"
"I don't know."
"Then choose."
Nyra smiled.
"I think I'd like to learn."
"Learn what?"
"How to be human."
Riva laughed softly.
"You already are."
Nyra looked at her.
"Am I?"
Riva nodded.
"You worry."
"You get angry."
"You love."
"You make terrible decisions."
Nyra laughed.
"That's human?"
"Very."
---
Across the river, Elara watched them.
Caelan stood beside her.
"You're worried about her."
Elara nodded.
"About everyone."
"Why?"
"Because for the first time, nobody has a destiny."
Caelan smiled.
"That's what makes them free."
Elara looked at him.
"Doesn't it scare you?"
"Of course."
"Then why aren't you afraid?"
"Because I've spent enough time following other people's plans."
He looked toward Riva.
"Now I want to make my own."
Elara smiled.
"Maybe that's what everyone needs."
---
The next morning, something unexpected happened.
A messenger arrived.
He was young and exhausted.
He ran through the village gates.
"Riva!"
She turned.
"What's wrong?"
"The western world..."
Riva immediately became serious.
"What happened?"
"The Gate opened."
"Who opened it?"
The messenger shook his head.
"No one."
Riva frowned.
"Then why?"
The messenger looked terrified.
"People are coming through."
"How many?"
"Thousands."
Riva looked toward Elara.
"Are they attacking?"
"No."
"Then what do they want?"
The messenger swallowed.
"They're asking for you."
---
The village fell silent.
Riva walked toward the western Gate.
Elara followed.
Caelan, Nyra, Lyra, Naren, and Seris joined them.
The Gate stood open.
On the other side...
Thousands of people waited.
Different clothes.
Different languages.
Different appearances.
Some carried weapons.
Others carried children.
Some looked frightened.
Some looked hopeful.
An old woman stepped forward.
She looked at Riva.
"You are the Creator."
Riva shook her head.
"Not anymore."
The woman smiled.
"Then perhaps that's why we came."
Riva frowned.
"Why?"
The woman pointed behind her.
"Because our world has no Creator."
"That's good."
"No."
The woman shook her head.
"It's dying."
---
Riva looked through the Gate.
The world beyond was beautiful.
But cracks covered the sky.
Mountains floated upside down.
Rivers flowed upward.
Trees flickered between existence and nothing.
Elara whispered:
"It's unstable."
Seris nodded.
"Because the worlds were separated."
Riva looked at her.
"Can we fix it?"
Seris shook her head.
"Not without controlling it."
Riva went silent.
The old problem.
The same choice.
Control...
Or freedom.
---
Elara stepped forward.
"Maybe we don't need to control it."
Riva looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
Elara held up the golden thread.
"The future I received."
Riva frowned.
"What about it?"
"Maybe it isn't just my future."
She looked toward the broken world.
"Maybe it's a connection."
The golden thread began glowing.
A second thread appeared.
Then a third.
Then hundreds.
They stretched through the Gate.
The broken world began stabilizing.
The cracks slowly disappeared.
The mountains stopped shaking.
The rivers returned to normal.
The people gasped.
Riva stared.
"You're connecting the worlds."
Elara nodded.
"But I'm not forcing them together."
"I'm giving them a choice."
---
A child from the other world stepped forward.
He looked at Elara.
"Can we visit your world?"
Elara smiled.
"If you want."
"And can we go home?"
"Whenever you want."
The child smiled.
"Then I'll visit."
He walked through.
Nothing happened.
The two worlds remained separate.
But connected.
A bridge existed between them.
A bridge that could be crossed...
Only by choice.
---
The old woman bowed.
"Thank you."
Elara shook her head.
"Don't thank me."
"Why?"
"You chose to come."
The woman smiled.
"And you chose to let us."
---
Riva watched her daughter.
A strange feeling filled her chest.
Pride.
Not because Elara had saved a world.
But because she had done it without becoming what Riva once was.
She hadn't controlled.
She hadn't ruled.
She hadn't decided for everyone.
She had simply opened a door.
And let people choose.
---
That night, Riva sat beside Caelan.
"You were right."
He smiled.
"I usually am."
"Don't ruin the moment."
He laughed.
Riva leaned against his shoulder.
"I think I'm finally ready."
"For what?"
"To stop being the Creator."
Caelan looked at her.
"What will you be instead?"
Riva looked toward Elara.
"A mother."
Caelan smiled.
"Just a mother?"
Riva thought.
"A woman."
"That's a good start."
---
Elara approached them.
"Mother."
Riva looked up.
"What?"
"I've decided something."
Riva smiled.
"That sounds dangerous."
Elara laughed.
"I'm leaving."
Riva's smile disappeared.
"Leaving?"
"Not forever."
"Where?"
Elara held up the golden thread.
"Beyond the Gate."
Riva stood.
"Why?"
"Because there are worlds that need bridges."
"You don't have to save them."
"I know."
"Then why go?"
Elara smiled.
"Because I want to."
Riva stared at her.
And this time...
She didn't stop her.
She didn't ask her to stay.
She didn't create a path for her.
She simply hugged her.
"Come back."
Elara hugged her tightly.
"I will."
---
Nyra stood nearby.
"Can I go too?"
Elara smiled.
"I was hoping you'd ask."
Riva looked at them.
"Both of you?"
Nyra nodded.
"We'll be careful."
Riva laughed.
"That's what everyone says before doing something dangerous."
Elara smiled.
"Maybe we'll surprise you."
Riva looked at Caelan.
"I think they're going to give me gray hair."
Caelan smiled.
"You already have some."
Riva hit his arm.
"That's not funny."
---
At sunrise, Elara and Nyra stood before the Gate.
Lyra and Naren stood beside them.
Seris remained behind.
Riva and Caelan watched from the village.
Elara turned around.
She smiled.
"Mother!"
Riva raised her hand.
"Yes?"
"I don't know where this path leads."
Riva smiled.
"Good."
Elara laughed.
Then she stepped through.
Nyra followed.
The Gate closed.
Riva stared at the empty space.
Caelan took her hand.
"Are you okay?"
Riva nodded.
"Yes."
"You're not afraid?"
She smiled.
"I am."
"Then why are you smiling?"
Riva looked at the place where her daughter had disappeared.
"Because this time..."
"...fear didn't make the choice for me."
The sun rose over the valley.
And somewhere beyond the Gate...
Elara began walking toward a future with no name.
A future she hadn't been given.
A future she hadn't been forced into.
A future she had chosen.
