BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE
Chapter 38: The Last Journey
The Gate closed behind Elara and Nyra.
For a moment, there was nothing.
No sound.
No light.
No ground beneath their feet.
Only endless white.
Elara looked around.
"Are we still in a world?"
Nyra shook her head.
"No."
"Then where are we?"
"Between them."
Elara looked at the golden thread wrapped around her wrist.
It was glowing.
A thin line stretched forward into the distance.
Nyra pointed.
"That's our path."
Elara smiled.
"Then let's follow it."
---
They walked.
There were no roads.
No signs.
No stars.
But every few steps, another world appeared around them.
A desert world.
A world covered in oceans.
A world where the sky was purple.
A world where enormous cities floated above the clouds.
A world where humans had never existed.
A world where they had.
A world that looked almost exactly like home.
Elara stopped.
"Why are we seeing all these?"
Nyra looked at the thread.
"It's showing us possibilities."
"Again?"
Nyra smiled.
"You seem to attract them."
Elara laughed.
"Very funny."
---
They reached the first world.
People were standing around a broken Gate.
A young man approached them.
"Are you the travelers?"
Elara nodded.
"Who told you about us?"
"The stars."
Nyra frowned.
"The stars?"
The young man pointed upward.
Every star had turned golden.
"They've been guiding people here."
Elara looked at the sky.
"Why?"
The man answered:
"Because our world is dying."
Elara sighed.
"Again."
Nyra looked at her.
"You don't have to save them."
Elara nodded.
"I know."
She looked at the broken Gate.
"What do they need?"
The man answered:
"A choice."
---
Elara understood.
She placed her hand on the Gate.
It didn't repair itself.
Instead, a doorway appeared beside it.
Two paths.
One led back to their world.
The other led deeper into the unknown.
The people stared.
"What happens if we choose the second?"
Elara smiled.
"You'll find another world."
"And if we don't?"
"You stay."
The man frowned.
"That's all?"
"That's enough."
---
One by one, people began choosing.
Some stayed.
Some left.
Some walked through the new doorway.
Some simply sat beside the old Gate.
Nobody was forced.
The world stabilized.
Elara smiled.
Nyra watched her.
"You're becoming like Riva."
Elara shook her head.
"No."
Nyra looked surprised.
"I'm becoming like myself."
---
They continued.
World after world.
They didn't rule.
They didn't command.
They didn't save everyone.
Sometimes they helped.
Sometimes they simply listened.
Sometimes they walked away.
And slowly...
The golden thread changed.
It became brighter.
Stronger.
Until one day...
It stopped.
Elara stared.
"What happened?"
Nyra looked ahead.
A door stood in the darkness.
A simple wooden door.
No magic.
No symbols.
No Crown.
Elara approached.
She touched the handle.
The door opened.
---
On the other side was a small garden.
Elara froze.
"I know this place."
Nyra looked around.
"So do I."
It was Riva's garden.
The house.
The hill.
The flowers.
The river.
Everything.
But nobody was there.
Elara walked toward the house.
The door opened by itself.
Inside was a table.
Two chairs.
And a letter.
Elara picked it up.
Her name was written on it.
ELARA.
She opened it.
Inside was a single sentence.
"If you are reading this, you finally found your own future."
Elara's eyes filled with tears.
"Mother..."
Nyra looked at the letter.
"She knew you'd come here."
Elara shook her head.
"No."
"Then how?"
Elara smiled.
"She didn't."
---
A voice came from behind them.
"Exactly."
They turned.
Riva stood in the doorway.
Elara froze.
"Mother?"
Riva smiled.
Elara ran toward her.
They embraced.
Nyra stood back, smiling.
Riva looked at both of them.
"I've been waiting."
Elara pulled away.
"How did you know we'd come?"
"I didn't."
"Then why were you here?"
Riva looked around the garden.
"Because I wanted to remember where everything began."
---
Elara looked confused.
"Is this the first world?"
Riva shook her head.
"No."
"The last?"
"No."
"Then what is it?"
Riva smiled.
"The world I never created."
Elara stared.
"What?"
Riva walked toward the garden.
"Before I created the first world, I imagined a place where nothing was controlled."
"No Creator."
"No Crown."
"No prophecy."
"No destiny."
"Just life."
"Then I became afraid."
"And I created everything else."
Elara looked around.
"So this place existed only in your imagination?"
"Yes."
Nyra touched a flower.
"And now?"
Riva smiled.
"Now it's real."
---
Elara sat beneath the tree.
"Why did you bring us here?"
"I didn't."
"Then why are we here?"
Riva looked at the golden thread.
"You brought yourselves."
Elara stared at it.
"The future led us here."
Riva nodded.
"Your future."
"Not mine."
"Exactly."
---
Nyra looked at Riva.
"What happens now?"
Riva smiled.
"I don't know."
Nyra laughed.
"You really like saying that."
"Because it's true."
Elara looked toward the horizon.
"What if we stay?"
Riva looked at her.
"You can."
"What if we leave?"
"You can."
"What if we build something here?"
Riva smiled.
"You can."
Elara laughed.
"You're not going to tell me what to do."
"No."
"Not even a little?"
"No."
"You're really serious."
Riva nodded.
"Because this is your life."
---
The three stood together in the garden.
Mother.
Daughter.
And the forgotten piece of the same creation.
For the first time, none of them needed a purpose.
They simply existed.
Then Caelan's voice echoed from the Gate.
"Riva!"
Riva turned.
Caelan stepped through.
Behind him came Lyra, Naren, and Seris.
Elara smiled.
"You followed us."
Caelan looked at Riva.
"I followed her."
He pointed at Riva.
Riva laughed.
"I didn't ask you to."
"I know."
"Then why?"
Caelan smiled.
"Because I wanted to."
---
Seris looked around.
"This place..."
Riva nodded.
"The world that never was."
Seris smiled.
"Then perhaps it is time."
Riva frowned.
"Time for what?"
Seris pointed toward the sky.
The golden stars were gathering.
One by one.
Thousands.
Millions.
They formed a circle above the garden.
Elara stared.
"What's happening?"
Seris answered:
"The worlds are choosing."
Riva looked upward.
"Choosing what?"
"Where they want to belong."
---
The golden stars began descending.
Some moved toward the existing worlds.
Some remained where they were.
Some disappeared.
No world was destroyed.
No world was forced.
Every reality chose its own place.
The universe slowly settled.
The endless chaos finally became quiet.
Riva watched.
"This is beautiful."
Elara smiled.
"You were right."
"About what?"
"The future doesn't need to be controlled."
Riva looked at her.
"It only needs room."
---
The last golden star descended.
It landed in the garden.
The flower that had grown from the mysterious seed opened.
Inside was a tiny glowing sphere.
Elara touched it.
A voice whispered:
"What will you create?"
Elara looked at Riva.
Riva didn't answer.
She simply smiled.
Elara looked at Nyra.
Nyra shrugged.
"It's your choice."
Elara looked at Caelan.
He smiled.
"Whatever you choose."
She looked at the garden.
Then the worlds.
Then the people.
Then the endless future.
She closed her eyes.
And instead of creating another kingdom...
Another Crown...
Another prophecy...
She created a door.
A simple door.
Anyone could open it.
Anyone could walk through.
Anyone could leave.
Anyone could return.
No ruler.
No owner.
No destiny.
Just a choice.
---
Riva looked at the door.
"What does it lead to?"
Elara smiled.
"Wherever someone wants to go."
Riva laughed.
"That's perfect."
The door opened.
Beyond it was nothing.
Then slowly...
A path appeared.
And at the end of the path...
A sunrise.
Riva looked at Elara.
"Are you ready?"
Elara smiled.
"I think so."
Nyra stood beside her.
"So am I."
Caelan took Riva's hand.
Lyra and Naren followed.
Seris stayed behind for a moment.
She looked at the garden.
Then smiled.
"Perhaps this is what peace looks like."
She stepped through.
The door remained open.
The worlds remained free.
And for the first time since the beginning of creation...
Nobody knew what would happen next.
And nobody was afraid.
Because the future no longer belonged to one person.
It belonged to everyone.
