BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom
Chapter 23: The Mountain of Beginnings
Morning light bathed the Hidden Valley in silver.
For the first time in thousands of years, the City of Dawn was alive with hope.
The White Tree swayed gently in the breeze, as if blessing the Covenant before their departure.
Riva held the silver key tightly.
It no longer felt cold.
It pulsed like a heartbeat.
---
The First Guardian stood before the Six Heirs.
"You have restored the First Promise."
"But your greatest journey begins now."
He looked toward the distant mountains beyond the valley.
"The Mountain of Beginnings lies beyond the Valley of Echoes."
"It is the oldest place in existence."
"It was there that the First Gate opened."
---
Caelan looked toward the horizon.
"I've never been there."
The old gardener smiled.
"Very few have."
"Even in Aurelia's greatest days, it was considered sacred."
---
Seren stepped beside Noctis.
"For thousands of years, we protected the city."
He bowed respectfully.
"Now..."
"It is your turn to protect the future."
The Six Heirs returned the bow.
No words were needed.
---
As they crossed the city gates, the people made of silver light gathered along the streets.
Children waved happily.
Musicians played soft melodies.
Elderly couples smiled proudly.
None of them spoke.
Yet the message was clear.
Thank you.
One by one, the spirits dissolved into countless silver stars, returning to the White Tree.
Their duty was complete.
---
Beyond the Hidden Valley stretched an endless plain covered in white flowers.
The wind carried their petals across the land.
Aarvi laughed as one landed on her nose.
"I think Aurelia likes saying goodbye."
Parna smiled.
"No."
"I think it's saying... 'Come back safely.'"
---
By sunset, the Covenant reached the Valley of Echoes.
Towering cliffs surrounded the narrow path.
The silence was unsettling.
No birds sang.
No insects buzzed.
Only the sound of their footsteps echoed through the valley.
---
Suddenly...
A familiar voice echoed around them.
"Riva..."
She turned.
No one was there.
Then another voice.
"Lucien..."
Another.
"Eva..."
Each of them heard someone calling their name.
---
Eva frowned.
"The echoes..."
"They're copying voices."
The First Guardian nodded.
"This valley doesn't repeat sounds."
"It repeats memories."
---
Without warning, shimmering figures appeared ahead.
Not enemies.
Not spirits.
The people they had lost.
Riva saw the caretaker from Black Hollow Station.
Lucien saw his father.
Eva saw her grandmother.
Parna saw her mother.
Aarvi saw her uncle.
Orion saw his former captain.
Caelan saw a smiling woman whose face he finally recognized.
"Mother..."
he whispered.
---
The figures smiled gently.
They reached out their hands.
For one heartbreaking moment...
Everything felt real.
Aarvi took a step forward.
But Riva gently caught her wrist.
"Remember what Lyra said."
"The key opens hearts."
"Not old wounds."
Aarvi closed her eyes.
She smiled sadly at her uncle.
"I'll make you proud."
The figure smiled one last time before dissolving into silver petals.
One by one, every memory faded peacefully.
The Valley of Echoes became silent once again.
---
The silver key suddenly glowed.
Its light spread across the valley floor.
Hidden beneath the flowers...
An ancient stone road appeared.
Symbols older than Aurelia glowed softly.
The First Guardian smiled.
"The true path."
---
The Covenant followed the road until nightfall.
At the end of the valley stood a colossal mountain that pierced the clouds.
Its peak shone with silver light.
Halfway up the mountain stood an enormous stone gate.
Unlike every other Gate they had seen...
This one had no frame.
It appeared to have been carved directly into reality itself.
Riva stared at it in awe.
"So this..."
"...is the First Gate."
The Guardian nodded.
"The beginning of every Promise."
---
Before they could climb any farther...
A slow clap echoed through the mountain pass.
Everyone turned.
Standing on a nearby cliff was the shadowy figure that had been watching them since the City of Dawn.
His black cloak fluttered in the wind.
This time, his face was visible.
He was young.
Calm.
His eyes glowed with shifting darkness.
He smiled politely.
"You've arrived sooner than I expected."
Lucien drew the Blade of Dawn.
"Who are you?"
The stranger placed a hand over his heart and bowed.
"My name no longer matters."
"I am simply..."
"...the Last Unwriter."
The wind suddenly stopped.
The sky darkened.
Behind the stranger, the stars began disappearing one by one.
Then he looked directly at Riva.
His smile widened.
"And I've come..."
"...for the Key."
