Chapter 84 - chapter 22

BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom

Chapter 22: The Key of the First Gate

Riva slowly opened her hand.

Resting in her palm was a small silver key.

It was beautifully crafted, with the symbol of the White Tree engraved on its handle.

Tiny stars shimmered along its edges, changing their positions as though they were alive.

The entire Hidden Valley fell silent.

Every eye was fixed on the key.

---

The First Guardian stepped forward.

His normally steady hands trembled.

"So..."

"It truly exists."

Riva looked up.

"You know what it is?"

He nodded.

"I've heard stories."

"But I never believed they were true."

---

Eva carefully examined the key.

Her compass immediately began spinning.

Every needle pointed toward the silver key.

"It isn't just a key," she whispered.

"It's connected to every Gate."

---

Suddenly, the White Tree released thousands of glowing leaves.

They circled above the Crystal Tower before gently falling around Riva.

One leaf landed on the silver key.

The moment it touched...

The key began glowing.

A beam of light shot into the sky.

Far above, the enormous Gate trembled.

---

Caelan stared upward.

"The Gate is responding."

The old gardener smiled.

"The Key has accepted its Keeper."

---

Without warning...

The Crystal Tower shook again.

This time, the tremor came from below.

Deep beneath the city.

A loud bell echoed through the valley.

DONG...

DONG...

DONG...

Arcturus looked toward the eastern side of the city.

"The Hall of Guardians."

"The bells only ring when a new Guardian is chosen."

---

The group hurried through the crystal streets.

The City of Dawn looked different now.

The flowers were brighter.

The rivers flowed with silver light.

People made entirely of glowing memories smiled as the Covenant passed.

They bowed respectfully before fading away.

"They're saying goodbye," Aarvi whispered.

"No," the First Guardian corrected gently.

"They're saying thank you."

---

Soon they reached an enormous circular hall.

Seven crystal statues stood around a glowing platform.

Six statues held familiar relics.

A notebook.

A sword.

A compass.

A flower.

A shield.

A wooden staff.

The seventh statue stood empty-handed.

Its face had never been carved.

---

Seren frowned.

"It was unfinished."

The First Guardian nodded.

"We were waiting for history to decide who the Seventh Guardian would become."

---

As Riva stepped onto the platform...

The silver key floated from her hand.

It drifted toward the unfinished statue.

Everyone watched in silence.

Instead of entering the statue's hand...

The key stopped in front of its chest.

Then...

The stone began changing.

The statue's face slowly formed.

Not Riva.

Not Caelan.

Not the First Guardian.

It became the face of Lyra.

Eva gasped.

"The Gate Weaver..."

---

Ancient letters appeared beneath the statue.

THE FIRST KEEPER

THE SEVENTH GUARDIAN

THE ONE WHO HELD THE FIRST KEY

---

Before anyone could react...

The statue's eyes opened.

Not as a living person.

As a magical guardian.

Lyra's gentle voice echoed through the hall.

"If you are hearing this..."

"...then the Key has found its next Keeper."

---

The glowing image smiled at Riva.

"You have already seen the stars fading."

Riva nodded.

"I have."

Lyra's expression grew serious.

"The darkness is spreading faster than before."

"The Gates are disappearing."

---

Lucien stepped forward.

"Can we stop it?"

Lyra looked toward the silver key.

"Yes."

"But only by opening the First Gate completely."

---

The First Guardian's face turned pale.

"No."

"We sealed it for a reason."

Lyra turned toward him.

"And now that reason no longer exists."

Silence filled the hall.

---

Seren looked confused.

"What changed?"

Lyra answered softly.

"The Covenant has become whole again."

"The Promise is no longer broken."

"The choice belongs to this generation."

---

The image slowly began fading.

Before disappearing...

She looked directly at Riva.

"There is one more truth."

"The Key does not open doors."

"It opens hearts."

With those final words...

The statue returned to stone.

---

No one spoke.

The weight of her message lingered in the air.

Then...

A sudden scream echoed from outside the hall.

The Covenant rushed into the street.

Above the Hidden Valley...

The sky had changed.

Several stars were vanishing one after another.

Not dimming.

Not falling.

Simply...

Ceasing to exist.

Every disappearing star caused another crack to spread across the great Gate in the heavens.

Eva whispered,

"It's happening..."

"The Unwriting."

---

Then the silver key grew warm in Riva's hand.

A new image appeared above it.

Not Lyra.

Not the First Guardian.

It was a map.

A glowing path leading far beyond the Hidden Valley.

At its end stood a lonely mountain crowned by a single white tree.

The First Guardian recognized it immediately.

"The Mountain of Beginnings..."

He looked at the Six Heirs.

"That is where the very first Gate was created."

Lucien smiled and tightened his grip on the Blade of Dawn.

"Then that's our next destination."

As the Covenant prepared to leave the City of Dawn, none of them noticed a tiny shadow watching from the highest tower.

Its eyes glowed with black light.

It whispered only four words before vanishing into the wind.

"They're finally coming home."
