BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom
Chapter 24: The Last Unwriter
The mountain fell silent.
Cold wind swept across the ancient stone path.
The stranger stood on the cliff, his black cloak fluttering behind him.
His dark eyes reflected the fading stars above.
Behind him...
The sky slowly unraveled.
One star vanished.
Then another.
Then another.
As each disappeared...
The world grew just a little quieter.
---
Lucien stepped forward.
The Blade of Dawn gleamed with silver light.
"You've been following us."
The stranger smiled.
"I've been waiting."
His voice carried no anger.
No hatred.
Only certainty.
---
Riva tightened her grip around the silver key.
"Who are you?"
The man looked toward the First Gate.
"I no longer have a name."
"It was erased long ago."
He looked back at her.
"Now..."
"I am simply..."
"...the Last Unwriter."
---
Eva frowned.
"Unwriter?"
The stranger nodded.
"Every story has someone who writes it."
"And every story..."
"...must someday end."
---
The First Guardian slowly stepped in front of the Covenant.
"I warned you never to return."
The Unwriter smiled faintly.
"And yet..."
"Here we are."
---
Caelan looked confused.
"You know him?"
The Guardian remained silent.
Finally...
He answered.
"I do."
"We met..."
"...before the First Kingdom disappeared."
---
The mountain trembled.
The First Gate released a soft silver glow.
The Unwriter looked toward it.
"I didn't come to fight."
"I came to ask one final question."
He looked directly at Riva.
"Will you give me the Key?"
---
Lucien immediately raised his sword.
"No."
The Unwriter didn't even look at him.
Instead...
He continued watching Riva.
"If you refuse..."
"I will not take it by force."
Riva frowned.
"Then why ask?"
He smiled sadly.
"Because the Key belongs to the one who chooses."
---
The First Guardian's expression darkened.
"Don't listen."
"He always speaks half the truth."
The Unwriter nodded.
"True."
"The other half..."
"...is too painful."
---
Suddenly...
The silver key began glowing.
It floated out of Riva's hand.
Everyone prepared for an attack.
But the key didn't fly toward the Unwriter.
Instead...
It hovered between them.
The First Gate responded.
Ancient symbols illuminated its massive surface.
A deep voice echoed across the mountain.
"Both bear the right to choose."
Silence.
Even the First Guardian looked shocked.
---
Eva whispered,
"Both?"
The Gate repeated.
"Both."
---
The Unwriter closed his eyes.
"So..."
"It remembers."
He slowly removed one black glove.
Burned into the palm of his hand...
Was the exact same symbol that appeared on the silver key.
The Covenant stared in disbelief.
Riva whispered,
"He has the same mark..."
---
The First Guardian sighed heavily.
"I hoped this truth would never return."
Lucien looked at him.
"What truth?"
The Guardian answered quietly.
"The First Gate chose..."
"...two Keepers."
---
No one spoke.
The wind itself seemed to stop.
The Unwriter nodded.
"One Keeper would protect every Promise."
He looked at Riva.
"The other..."
"...would protect every ending."
---
Aarvi blinked.
"So you're not trying to destroy everything?"
The Unwriter smiled.
"No."
"I'm trying to stop something far worse."
---
Without warning...
The sky cracked.
Not the clouds.
The sky itself.
A gigantic black fracture stretched across the heavens.
The stars nearest to it disappeared instantly.
The First Gate trembled.
The White Tree, far away in the Hidden Valley, shed thousands of silver leaves.
Eva gasped.
"The Unwriting..."
"It's accelerating."
---
The Unwriter looked at the spreading fracture.
"There isn't much time."
He turned back to Riva.
"If the First Gate opens completely..."
"The thing beyond it will awaken."
Caelan frowned.
"You mean Lyra?"
The Unwriter slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Even Lyra fears what sleeps beyond the First Gate."
---
The silver key suddenly split into two identical halves.
One floated toward Riva.
The other floated toward the Unwriter.
The Gate's ancient voice echoed once more.
"The Beginning..."
The second key settled into the Unwriter's hand.
"...and the Ending."
Both keys shone together.
The mountain began to shake violently.
The First Gate slowly started opening.
From within came neither light nor darkness...
But endless mist.
A soft melody drifted out of the opening.
It was beautiful.
Peaceful.
Almost inviting.
The First Guardian's face turned pale.
"No..."
"It heard the Keys."
Then...
A child's laughter echoed from inside the Gate.
Riva froze.
She knew that laugh.
It was the same mysterious child she had heard in Black Hollow Station on the very first day her journey began.
A small silhouette appeared in the white mist.
It raised one hand toward the Covenant.
Then...
It whispered one sentence that chilled everyone.
"You've finally come back..."
