Chapter 21 - The Silent Woods

The forest swallowed sound entirely the moment Azraeth stepped beneath its first twisted branches.

No wind moved through the blackened canopy. No snow fell here, though frost coated every trunk and root in a thin, glittering shell. For a long stretch, nothing in the dead woodland stirred at all — until the branches began to shake.

Frozen trunks groaned as something massive moved through them, and Wendigos descended from the canopy itself, more emerging silently from behind trees wide enough to hide a dozen men, gliding through the frost-laced undergrowth without disturbing so much as a single fallen branch.

The first strike came from directly overhead, claws dropping silently from the canopy toward his skull.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield caught it an instant before contact, and Azraeth answered with a burning uppercut that ended the creature mid-fall. Two more emerged from behind a massive trunk to his left, moving in perfect silent tandem; Heat Sense flagged both before they cleared the tree line, and he teleported directly between them, ending both before they'd finished registering his arrival. A third dropped from a branch overhead in a delayed follow-up, timed to catch him mid-motion; Foresight caught the delay, and he simply stepped aside, letting it crash into frozen roots below.

A fourth seized his wrist from behind a snowdrift, dragging with unnatural strength toward a waiting pair; Azraeth let the pull carry him forward rather than resist, using the momentum to drive a burning headbutt into the puller's skull before wrenching free of the grip entirely. The waiting pair lunged the instant he broke loose; he met them both with a spinning elbow that caught the first across the jaw and a follow-up knee that folded the second before either could recover.

A fifth struck from a blind angle he hadn't fully covered, claws raking across his shoulder; Heat Thickness dulled the blow into a shallow scratch rather than the tearing wound it should have been, and he answered without breaking stride, a burning backhand ending the attacker before it could press the advantage.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared around his feet, carrying him through the deepening ambush before the forest's cover could fully conceal the next wave. A pack used the trees themselves as a maze, weaving between trunks to strike from angles that shifted constantly; Azraeth read the pattern through Heat Sense, meeting each emergence a half-second before it fully committed. A cluster of five converged from a snow-choked hollow between roots, claws raking low; he dropped into their reach rather than away, driving a burning knee up through the center of the formation before they could spread wide enough to surround him properly. A sixth attempted to ambush from a branch directly above the hollow, timing its drop to catch him distracted; Foresight flagged the delay, and he rolled clear an instant before it landed, ending it with a burning kick before it could reorient.

The pack shifted tactics, driving him toward a stand of close-packed trunks meant to restrict his movement entirely.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He spread unstable ground beneath the herding formation instead of resisting it, and half the pack lost footing on terrain that no longer held. A pair tried to flank from behind the collapsing formation; Azraeth caught one with a grapple, using its own momentum to hurl it into the second, both crashing through a frozen trunk that split entirely on impact. A third clung to a branch overhead, refusing to descend into the churned ground below; he answered with a burning leap that caught it mid-perch, ending it before it could drop clear.

They began coordinating with genuine intelligence now, packs feinting retreats to draw him into ambushes sprung from three directions at once. Azraeth answered by refusing to chase any single feint, letting Foresight mark the true attack before committing to any response at all. A wave of a dozen surged from the treeline in a single coordinated rush; he met it with Stellar Pull, expanding the ultimate into its large form, gravity dragging frost and broken branches and Wendigos alike toward the burning center blooming above the forest floor. A handful clung to root systems deep enough to resist the pull entirely; he abandoned the vortex for direct strikes against them, ending each in turn while the star's light still bathed the clearing gold.

A stray claw finally found his forearm, tearing deep; he pressed a burning palm to it mid-strike.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The wound sealed shut, and as the last of the pack gathered for one final, coordinated charge, Azraeth fell back three strides to meet it properly.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light gathered between his palms as the charging remnant surged toward him through the ruined treeline. He held the compression steady through Fire Protection absorbing what little reached him, refusing to let their numbers rush the charge before it finished. The detonation completed a heartbeat before their line could close, reducing the coordinated assault to ash and drifting frost in a single silent flash. Azraeth pushed forward through the last scattered survivors, ending the final cluster with a wide sweep of thermal light that melted frost from bark for a dozen meters in every direction, the forest finally falling still around him.

Azraeth sank against a frost-covered trunk, chest heaving, exhaustion finally catching up to him after hundreds of relentless exchanges. He allowed himself a long moment before pushing upright again.

Floor fifty-two's two hundred and fifty-five Wendigos ambushed through the same silent forest, but Azraeth met them with cleaner economy this time, Heat Sense mapping the treeline before any single ambush could fully form. A pack tried baiting him toward a hollow rigged with a secondary ambush waiting beneath the snow; he read the trap through Foresight and let the hidden attackers surface into a burning sweep before they'd finished their approach.

Floor fifty-three's two hundred and sixty coordinated feints more aggressively, several packs sacrificing themselves as distractions for a genuine strike from elsewhere; Azraeth read through the deception with Foresight, ending distractions and true threats alike before either could matter. A cluster attempted to collapse a frost-heavy branch down onto him mid-fight; he teleported clear an instant before the weight came down, reappearing already mid-strike against the pack that had triggered it.

Floor fifty-four's two hundred and sixty-five turned the forest itself into a battlefield of collapsing trunks and churned frost, entire stands of ancient trees splintering under the fight's accumulated violence. A pack attempted to encircle him using the wreckage of an earlier collapse as cover; Azraeth answered with Mud Lava thrown wide across the debris field, catching the entire formation in unstable ground before it could close. By its end, Azraeth moved through the dead woodland with the same silent certainty the Wendigos themselves had always carried.

Floor fifty-five's silence broke heavier than any before it.

They fought with formations now rather than mere numbers, packs holding disciplined lines while smaller groups darted in to test his guard before retreating. Fire Booster carried him through the first coordinated press, burning strikes chaining into teleports that placed him behind formations before they could adjust. A group used fallen trunks as barricades, forcing him through narrow gaps they'd already prepared to defend; he answered by teleporting clear over the barricade entirely, ending the ambush from above before it could close. A second formation split deliberately, half circling wide while the other pressed directly, testing whether he'd chase the flanking half; he ignored the bait entirely, driving straight through the center formation instead and scattering both halves in the same motion.

A third line attempted to bottleneck him between two collapsed trunks, claws waiting on both sides of the narrow gap; Azraeth teleported clear over the entire formation rather than walk into it, reappearing behind their line and ending three before they'd finished turning to face an enemy no longer in front of them.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

He opened with the compressed form first, a blinding sliver of stellar energy tearing through the densest early formation before it could fully organize, punching clean through six Wendigos in a single line.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield absorbed a coordinated strike from an entire flanking line, buying the half-second needed to answer with a sweeping counter that broke their formation entirely. Heat Thickness dulled a follow-up strike into a shallow scratch, and he answered with a burning elbow that ended the attacker before it could reset. A grappling trio seized his limbs simultaneously, straining to hold him still for a coordinated finishing blow; he drove his weight low and rotated hard, using the combined leverage against itself to throw all three into a collapsing trunk before the fourth attacker could arrive.

A stray claw finally opened a gash across his ribs during the chaos; he pressed a burning palm to it without slowing.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The wound sealed shut, and he pushed forward immediately, refusing to let the formation reclaim any ground he'd already broken.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He trapped an entire advancing line in churning, unstable ground, buying the time he needed to fall back and gather his remaining strength.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light compressed between his palms as the trapped line tore free and surged toward him regardless. He held the charge through Fire Protection absorbing what he couldn't avoid, refusing to let their numbers rush the compression. A single Wendigo broke ahead of the rest, hurling itself directly at the gathering light with claws extended toward the core; Azraeth stepped into its path without releasing the charge, ending it with a single burning strike before it could disturb the compression at all. The detonation completed a heartbeat before the remaining wave could close the final distance, reducing the charging mass to ash in a single silent flash.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore through what remained of the densest formation, and he followed with the star's large form, gravity dragging the last survivors into a burning vortex that finally silenced the forest entirely. He ended the last stragglers with controlled, exhausted strikes, the woodland settling into true stillness once the final Wendigo fell.

Azraeth rested briefly amid the frost-silvered ruin of the forest floor before continuing deeper.

The dead trees vanished entirely as he descended, replaced by a vast frozen ruin — ancient structures encased in ice stretching into darkness far beyond what his eyes could follow, everything about the place carrying the weight of something forgotten far longer than the forest above it.

He took one careful step forward, boots crunching against ice-locked stone that hadn't felt weight in longer than any record of Valvyx could measure.

The ruins woke instantly. Ancient mechanisms groaned to life somewhere deep beneath the ice, and the frozen ground itself began to crack apart, something enormous stirring awake far below the ruin's frost-locked surface.
