Chapter 24 - The Second Awakening

The blizzard answered her transformation like something waking.

Wind that had merely howled through the shattered windows now tore through the throne room in violent, screaming gusts, and the temperature dropped with it — not gradually, but all at once, a plunge so sudden Azraeth felt the moisture in the air crystallize against his skin. Ice spread outward from where Katabasis stood, crawling across the cracked marble in jagged veins, climbing the remaining pillars, sealing over the debris of their first exchange as though the palace itself were trying to erase the fight that had already happened here.

The storm thickened until the far walls vanished behind a wall of white, and Azraeth understood, with a cold certainty that had nothing to do with the temperature, that this was no longer his fight to control. This was her domain now.

She rose to her full height amid the swirling snow, colossal antlers of black ice scraping against a ceiling that groaned in protest, and when she finally moved, she didn't ricochet off pillars or vanish into mist the way she had before.

She simply closed the distance like an avalanche given purpose.

Azraeth's arms came up on instinct, Heat Sense screaming a fraction of a second before the blow landed, and even braced, the impact of her claw against his crossed forearms sent him skidding backward across the ice, furrows tearing up the marble beneath his boots. The force of it alone cracked the floor in a spiderweb radiating outward from where he'd stood.

She's not even using her full strength yet, he thought, shaking the numbness from his arms. And that already hurt more than her entire first form combined.

She didn't give him time to finish the thought. A sweeping backhand followed, wide enough to catch the pillar beside him, and the ancient stone didn't crack — it simply exploded, sending shards of ice and rock scattering through the storm. Azraeth ducked beneath the debris, rolling low across the frozen ground, and came up already moving into her guard rather than away from it.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared to life around his feet, and he closed the gap before she could reset her stance, driving a burning knee into her ribs. It connected — solid, real — but it was like striking a glacier. She barely staggered, and the counter came immediately, a clawed hand snapping toward his throat with a speed that shouldn't have belonged to something her size. He caught it on a raised forearm, Heat Thickness dulling the worst of it, and pivoted with the momentum rather than against it, using her own strength to throw himself clear of the follow-up strike that tore through the space he'd occupied a heartbeat earlier.

The exchange didn't slow from there. It only grew heavier.

She came at him in relentless combinations now, claws sweeping in patterns that left no gaps to exploit, forcing him into pure reaction — duck, parry, redirect, retreat, duck again — each block sending fresh vibration up through his bones, each dodge closer than the last. Foresight caught the shape of her attacks a fraction before they landed, but even knowing where the blow was coming didn't make absorbing it any easier. She hit like the mountain the palace was built into had decided to fight back.

An opening came when she overextended a sweeping claw meant to bisect him at the waist — he read it, ducked beneath the arc, and drove a burning elbow up into her exposed jaw before rolling clear of the counter he knew was coming. Ice cracked across her face where the strike landed, and for the first time, she actually staggered.

Good. She can be hurt.

She answered by slamming both fists into the floor, and the marble erupted beneath him in a spray of frozen shrapnel, forcing him airborne — directly into the aerial strike she'd already positioned herself for, claws raking down from above in an attack that shouldn't have been possible from someone who'd been on the ground a half-second earlier. He twisted mid-air, Teleport flickering him just clear of the strike's true arc, reappearing behind her and driving a burning fist into her spine before she could fully turn.

The palace groaned around them, chunks of the ceiling giving way under the sheer force of the exchange, ice and stone raining down into a storm that swallowed the debris before it could even settle.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He spread molten ground beneath her next charge, and for a heartbeat her footing failed, boots sinking into the unstable mire. It wasn't enough to hold her — nothing seemed to be enough to hold her — but it bought him the half-second he needed to circle wide, putting a shattered pillar between them before she tore free.

She didn't bother going around it. She went through it.

The pillar detonated into fragments, and Azraeth barely got his guard up in time, the follow-up strike driving him back a dozen feet across the ice, boots carving twin trenches through the frozen marble. His shoulder screamed where her claws had grazed through Fire Protection's shield, the fire flickering but holding, just barely.

If that shield breaks, I don't think I survive the next hit clean.

He pressed back in anyway, chaining burning strikes into whatever openings her aggression left behind, refusing to let the fight settle into her rhythm entirely. A knee to the ribs. An elbow redirected off a parried claw. A burning palm strike that cracked fresh ice across her collarbone. She absorbed each one and answered with something heavier, the two of them trading ground across a throne room that grew more ruined with every exchange, pillars toppling, statues shattering, the ancient ice sheeting the walls fracturing under the sheer pressure radiating off both of them.

It was somewhere in the middle of a brutal close-range exchange — parry, counter, redirect, strike — that the pain first hit him.

A dull throb behind his eyes, easy enough to ignore at first. He blinked through it, kept his footing, answered her next combination with a counter that should have been clean.

It wasn't. He was a half-second slow, and her claws caught his forearm instead of glancing off it, drawing blood even through Heat Thickness's dulling.

The throb sharpened.

His vision blurred at the edges for just a moment, the storm around them doubling before snapping back into focus, and he staggered a step retreating from her next strike rather than pivoting cleanly through it. Katabasis pressed the opening without hesitation, claws driving him backward across the ice, and Azraeth's guard came up a fraction late each time, Foresight's warnings arriving a beat behind where they should have.

"Ugh... My head hurts!"

He bit the words out between gritted teeth, barely dodging a follow-up swipe that would have opened his throat, and pressed a burning palm against his temple without breaking stride.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The flame spread warm relief through the ache, and it dulled — enough to steady his footing, enough to sharpen his reads again — but it didn't vanish entirely. A dull pressure lingered behind his eyes, stubborn and unfamiliar, refusing to burn away the way every other wound had.

Later. Deal with it later.

He shoved the thought aside and threw himself back into the fight, meeting her next charge head-on rather than retreating from it, exchanging blow for blow in a close-range brawl that left no room for hesitation on either side. She fought like an avalanche that had learned to think, and he fought like a man who refused to be buried under it, and somewhere in that grinding, brutal exchange, the battle became less about technique and more about will.

When the opening finally came, it came from her.

A wide, overcommitted swing — frustration bleeding into her aggression as strike after strike failed to end him — left her flank exposed for the barest instant. Azraeth didn't waste it.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

The compressed sphere left his palm at a velocity that outran the storm itself, punching through her guard and detonating against her ribs before she could even register the throw. She staggered, ice cracking wide across her side, and he closed the distance instantly, driving a chain of burning strikes into the same wound — knee, elbow, palm, knee again — refusing to let her recover the ground she'd lost.

She answered with a final, desperate surge, claws raking in wild arcs that carried more fury than precision now, and Azraeth read the pattern easily, weaving through the gaps Foresight laid bare before him. A last burning strike caught her clean across the jaw, and this time, when she staggered, she didn't recover.

Katabasis collapsed into the ruined ice, the storm around her faltering, the blizzard's howl dying into something closer to a whimper.

Azraeth stood over her, chest heaving, blood and frost mingling along his forearm, the dull ache still throbbing faint behind his eyes.

"Huff... huff... ugh..."

Ice cracked.

Her body convulsed against the shattered marble, and the fractures spread wide across her prone form, deep and violent, something ancient stirring beneath skin and fur that had already been torn apart twice now. Her antlers split further, stretching wider, darker, resembling the skeletal remains of some long-dead forest rather than anything that had ever lived. A colossal shell of primordial ice began sealing over her body in slow, deliberate layers, plate by plate, entombing whatever remained of the predator he had fought into something far older, far heavier, far beyond anything the throne room had witnessed yet.

The blizzard surged back to life, violent and absolute, and the entire palace seemed to bow beneath the weight of what was waking.

"Again?"

Azraeth exhaled, long and tired, staring at the transformation with the particular exhaustion of a man who had genuinely believed the fight was already over.

"Are you kidding me?"
