Chapter 20 - The Blinding Snow

Azraeth stepped forward into the drifting white, and the tunnel around him vanished entirely into shifting snow, visibility collapsing to arm's length in every direction. Every stride looked identical to the last — no walls he could track, no ceiling to orient by, only endless white and the absolute silence pressing down heavier than anything the floors above had carried. Even Heat Sense struggled here, warmth scattering into the cold air before it could resolve into anything he could fully trust.

Then the silence broke.

Snow burst upward around him in a dozen places at once, Wendigos surging free of drifts that had concealed them entirely, more dropping from unseen stalactites overhead while others tore free of narrow ice tunnels hidden within walls he hadn't even known were there.

One erupted from the snow directly beneath his feet, claws raking upward before he'd registered the ground moving at all.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield caught the strike an instant before it connected, and Azraeth answered with a burning stomp that ended the creature before it fully cleared the snow. Two more dropped from stalactites he hadn't spotted through the whiteout; Heat Sense flagged both a half-second before impact, and he rolled clear, Godfire scorching a path through frozen ground where they landed. A third burst sideways from a hidden ice tunnel at his flank, and he pivoted into it rather than away, driving a burning elbow through its skull before its claws finished extending.

A fourth seized his ankle from beneath the snow itself, dragging at his footing; Azraeth didn't fight the pull, dropping his weight into it instead and driving a burning fist straight down through the drift, ending the creature before it fully surfaced. Two more emerged from opposite directions in perfect coordination, claws aimed at either side of his ribs; he twisted between them, letting both strikes pass through empty air, and answered each with a burning counter before they could recover their stance.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared around his feet, carrying him through the next wave before the snow could conceal their approach entirely. A pack leapt stalactite to stalactite above him, using the frozen spires as stepping stones to close from an angle no ground-based defense could anticipate; Foresight caught the pattern of their leaps, and he teleported directly into their landing zone; three ended before their claws ever touched snow. A fourth adjusted mid-leap, twisting to land behind him instead — Heat Sense caught the change in trajectory, and he spun into the landing with a burning knee that met it before its feet ever found purchase.

A cluster of six burst from beneath the drift at once, surrounding him in a ring he hadn't seen forming.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He dropped low, turning the snow-covered ground to churning, unstable slush beneath their claws, and half the ring lost footing entirely. Azraeth ended three before the others recovered, and a fourth lunged from behind — Heat Sense caught it, and he grappled the strike rather than dodge, using the creature's own momentum to hurl it into a stalactite that shattered on impact, burying two more beneath falling ice. A fifth tried to flee back into the drift to regroup; he denied the retreat with a burst of Fire Booster, ending it before it could vanish beneath the snow again.

A pair dropped from directly overhead in a coordinated strike aimed at both shoulders at once; Heat Thickness dulled the impact into little more than bruising pressure, and Azraeth answered with a double-armed sweep that ended both before they could reset for a second attempt.

The pack adapted, no longer relying on single ambushes but coordinating waves that struck from multiple concealment points simultaneously — snow, stalactite, and hidden tunnel all releasing attackers in the same heartbeat. Rather than meet the surge directly, Azraeth fell back three strides and gathered the last of his reserves.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light compressed between his palms as the coordinated wave closed in, and he held the charge through Fire Protection absorbing what he couldn't avoid, refusing to let their numbers rush the compression before it finished. The detonation caught the entire wave at once, reducing dozens to ash in a single silent flash and leaving only scattered stragglers in the sudden quiet that followed.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

He expanded the remaining ultimate reserves into its full form regardless, a colossal star blooming through the blizzard itself, gravity dragging what little remained of the pack toward its burning center. Azraeth pressed the opening ruthlessly, ending clusters before they could reform out of the swirling white. A handful buried themselves deeper into the snow to resist the pull, claws anchored against frozen ground; he abandoned the vortex for direct strikes against them, burning fists finding purchase where gravity alone couldn't finish the job.

A stray claw finally opened a gash along his ribs during the chaos; he pressed a burning palm to it without slowing.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The wound sealed shut, and he drove the thinning pack toward a narrower stretch where the blizzard itself couldn't hide them anymore, ending the last of them with a wide sweep of thermal light that melted snow into steam for a dozen meters in every direction.

Azraeth pressed deeper into the endless white, the blizzard showing no sign of relenting floor after floor.

Floor forty-seven's two hundred and thirty Wendigos ambushed from beneath drifts stacked three deep, testing footing he'd already learned to read through Heat Sense alone; he met every ambush a half-second before it surfaced, ending most before they'd fully cleared the snow. A cluster attempted to bait him toward a weakened ice shelf, hoping the ground itself would betray his footing; he read the trap through Foresight and let the shelf collapse beneath them instead, three vanishing into the crevasse it opened.

Floor forty-eight's two hundred and thirty-five leapt between stalactites in far tighter coordination, forcing him to track multiple aerial approaches at once; he answered by collapsing an entire cluster of stalactites with a single burning sweep, denying them the platforms entirely and sending a dozen crashing into the snow below before they'd finished their approach. A secondary wave adjusted immediately, abandoning the stalactites for a ground rush instead; Azraeth met it with Mud Lava thrown wide, catching the entire charge in churning slush before it could close.

Floor forty-nine's two hundred and forty came from hidden ice tunnels riddling every wall at once, and Azraeth used Mud Lava to seal the tunnel mouths themselves, trapping packs mid-emergence before they could fully commit to the ambush. A handful forced their way through anyway, claws tearing at the unstable ground; he ended each as they emerged, one at a time, the tunnels themselves becoming a bottleneck that worked entirely in his favor. By the floor's end, the blizzard itself seemed to offer him less resistance than it once had, snow parting around strikes that no longer hesitated.

Floor fifty's silence broke louder than any before it.

They came in massed, coordinated waves this time, snow and stalactite and hidden tunnel releasing attackers in overlapping rhythm rather than isolated ambushes. Fire Booster carried him through the opening surge, burning strikes chaining into teleports that placed him behind entire clusters before they registered his absence. A wave leapt from stalactites in perfect unison, and he met it mid-air, a spinning kick scattering three before they landed. Another pair burst from the snow directly ahead, claws crossing to catch him between them; he dropped flat beneath both strikes, letting them meet each other overhead, and rose already driving twin burning punches into their exposed flanks.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield absorbed a coordinated strike from four directions at once, buying the half-second needed to answer with a sweeping counter that cleared them all. A massive stalactite collapsed nearby, shattering into a spray of ice that Azraeth used as cover, closing distance while a fresh wave scrambled to reorient through the debris. Heat Thickness dulled a claw strike aimed at his spine into a shallow scratch, and he answered with a burning elbow that ended the attacker outright. A grappling pair seized both his arms from either side, straining to hold him in place for a third to finish the kill; he drove both his own elbows backward simultaneously, breaking free of both grips before the third could close the distance.

A deep gash opened along his thigh when a claw finally found purchase through a gap in his guard; he pressed a burning palm to the wound without breaking stride.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The wound sealed shut mid-motion, and he pressed forward immediately, refusing to let the pack reclaim the ground he'd fought to hold. A cluster nearly cornered him against a wall of ice, claws raking from three directions at once; Teleport carried him clear entirely, reappearing behind the cluster to end all three before they'd registered his absence.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He sealed three tunnel mouths at once with churning, unstable ground, trapping an entire wave mid-emergence, and used the reprieve to fall back and gather his remaining strength.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light gathered between his palms as the trapped wave tore free and surged toward him regardless. Azraeth held the charge through Fire Protection absorbing the first strikes, teleporting clear of a second surge without releasing what he'd built. A third assault came in the form of a Wendigo hurling itself directly at the gathering light, claws extended toward the compressing core itself; Azraeth stepped into its path at the last instant, ending it with a single burning strike before it could disturb the charge at all, the compression completing a heartbeat before the remaining wave could close the final distance. Light tore outward in a silent, catastrophic flash, reducing the charging mass to ash and drifting steam in an instant.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore through what remained of the densest concentration, and he followed with the star's large form, gravity dragging the last survivors into a burning vortex that finally left the blizzard around him truly silent. He ended the last stragglers with controlled, exhausted strikes, the snow settling into stillness once the final Wendigo fell.

Azraeth allowed himself a brief rest amid the settling snow before descending once more.

The freezing tunnels vanished entirely, replaced by an endless forest of blackened, twisted trees stretching further than his eyes could follow. No wind stirred the branches. No birds called anywhere within it. Everything held unnaturally still, the silence here different from the blizzard's absence of sound — heavier, deliberate, watching.

He stepped deeper into the dead trees, boots silent against ground that held no snow, no frost, nothing but bare, ash-grey earth beneath blackened roots. For a long moment, nothing happened at all.

Then the twisted branches began to shake.
