Chapter 1 - THE MARK

"Hey, stop!"

The voice tore through the dry afternoon air, sharp and commanding, echoing behind her like a warning she refused to obey. Sphesihle didn't slow down. She didn't even look back. Every instinct in her body screamed one thing 'run'. Her feet pounded against the dusty Mpumalanga Road, kicking up clouds of sand as the relentless sun burned down on her skin. Her lungs felt like they were on fire, each breath coming out shorter, sharper, more desperate than the last. But she kept going.

Because this wasn't just fear.

This was survival.

And deep inside her, something else was awakening something she didn't understand, something that had been waiting.

That morning had started like any other.

Sphesihle had woken up early, long before the heat became unbearable, and began her usual routine. Their small home stood quietly on the edge of the village, worn but strong, much like the two people who raised her. Her grandparents had done everything they could to give her a stable life, even if it meant sacrificing comfort.

She moved around the house, cleaning, preparing vegetables, and getting ready to go out and sell. It was exhausting work, but it was necessary. They needed the money.

As she adjusted the small bag she would carry, her grandmother's voice cut through the stillness.

"Sihle, at least cover your back," she said, her tone firm but filled with concern.

Sphesihle sighed, already knowing where this was going.

"Gogo, it's too hot," she replied, barely looking up. "And it's just a birthmark."

But even as she said it, her hand brushed against her back. The mark was strange, too detailed, too deliberate to be something random. It looked almost like a symbol, something carved rather than formed. Her grandmother had always dismissed it, but Sphesihle had never fully believed her.

There was more to it.

She could feel it.

By midday, the sun had taken full control of the sky, turning the air thick and suffocating. Sphesihle moved from place to place, selling vegetables, her energy slowly draining with each step. Eventually, she found herself walking near the edge of a quiet forest a shortcut she had taken many times before.

That's when the car appeared.

A black vehicle rolled up beside her, its presence sudden and unsettling. At first, she ignored it. But then the door opened, and a man stepped out.

The moment his eyes landed on her back, everything changed.

His expression froze.

His eyes widened with something between shock and recognition.

"Where do you live?" he asked quickly, stepping closer.

Sphesihle frowned, instinctively stepping back. "Why?"

"Where is your mother?" he pressed, his voice tightening. "You're not supposed to be here."

Confusion turned into unease.

"I live near the main store," she said cautiously. "Why are you asking?"

"You're coming with me."

His hand shot out, gripping her arm tightly.

For a split second, she froze.

Then instinct took over.

She drove her knee upward with force, catching him off guard. He groaned, loosening his grip just enough. Without thinking, she grabbed a handful of potatoes from her bag and hurled them straight at his face before turning and sprinting.

"Catch her!" he shouted.

And just like that, everything spiraled.

Footsteps thundered behind her.

Not one.

Four.

They were chasing her like predators tracking prey, their voices cutting through the air as they gained ground. Sphesihle pushed herself harder than she ever had before, her legs burning, her chest tightening with every breath. Branches scratched against her skin as she cut through rough paths, her mind racing faster than her body.

Why are they chasing me?

What do they know?

The only answer she had was the mark.

That mark.

Eventually, the shouting began to fade. The footsteps grew distant.

They had lost her.

But she didn't stop.

Not until she reached Kumkani's store, ducking behind a nearby yard where a broken gate gave her just enough space to hide. She crouched low, her body trembling as she struggled to catch her breath.

Her hands shook as she pulled out her small phone and dialed her grandmother.

"Gogo…" she said, her voice uneven. "They saw my mark… and they tried to take me."

There was silence on the other end.

"Breathe, Sihle," her grandmother said quickly. "Where are you?"

"I'm near the store… hiding."

Then her grandmother spoke again, her voice calmer but heavier.

"Come home tonight," she said. "There's something you need to see."

By the time Sphesihle returned home, the sky had darkened, and the world felt different. Quiet. Tense. Like something was waiting.

Her grandmother didn't hesitate.

She led Sphesihle to a hidden section of the house and opened a concealed door.

Sphesihle stepped inside and froze.

The room was unlike anything she had ever seen. Advanced technology lined the walls, glowing panels flickering with energy she couldn't understand. It was completely out of place in their modest home.

"Gogo… what is this?" she asked, her voice trembling. "We struggle every day… but this? This looks like we're rich. Why have we been living like we have nothing?"

Tears flowed in her eyes as frustration built up inside her.

"And now I'm being chased because of a birthmark? I don't understand anything!"

Her grandmother stepped forward, her face filled with guilt.

"It's time you knew the truth."

But before she could say more, the weight of everything overwhelmed Sphesihle.

Her vision blurred.

And everything went black.

When she woke up, the room felt quiet.

Too quiet.

Her grandmother sat beside her, tears streaming down her face, while her grandfather stood nearby, his expression heavy.

"We're sorry," he said softly.

Sphesihle pushed herself up, her heart racing.

"Tell me," she demanded.

Her grandmother took a deep breath.

"Your mother… is not human."

The words hit hard.

"She's something else," her grandfather continued. "A being with powers we don't fully understand. She can transform into creatures, into other people. But every time she uses her abilities… lives are lost. That's why she left you with us. To protect you."

Sphesihle's mind struggled to keep up.

"And me?" she asked quietly.

Her grandmother looked at her back.

"The mark you carry… it represents power. Like your mother, you have abilities. You just haven't awakened them yet."

Before Sphesihle could respond they heard loud footsteps nearby.

Her grandfather's expression changed instantly.

"They've found us."

Gunshots rang out upstairs.

Her grandmother gasped.

Her grandfather turned to her, urgency in his eyes.

"Run, Sihle. Run!"

She didn't think.

She ran.

Out of the house.

Into the night.

But this time, something inside her snapped.

The fear, The confusion, The anger. It all exploded at once.

Her body felt different stronger, lighter, faster. Her senses sharpened, her movements becoming unnatural, almost effortless. Before she could even understand what was happening, she moved faster than she ever had before.

She turned back.

The men barely had time to react.

Within moments, she overpowered them, her strength overwhelming, her speed unstoppable. She locked them away without effort, her breathing steady despite everything.

Silence followed.

Shaking, she rushed back inside, helping her grandparents to safety.

Tears streamed down her face as she hugged them tightly.

"I have to go," she whispered.

Her grandfather nodded, his voice soft but firm.

"You need answers."

She pulled away, her heart heavy but determined.

As she stepped into the night once more, his words echoed in her mind.

Run, Sihle. Run.

But now She wasn't just running away.

She was running toward the truth.
