Chapter 29 - .

The room hums with quiet arguments no one says aloud.

Jason and Kyra sit close, hands brushing, tense but unspoken.

Thorian leans close to Kaida, quiet but steady.

Jake watches, careful, his forehead pressed to Kyra's shoulder.

Lyrelle and Prince exchange glances, restrained like they're trying not to say the words "my girlfriend" and "my boyfriend" out loud.

And Ryan? He's pacing, restless, arms crossed, mind racing.

Zyren notices him and stops him. "Hey, sit. You're making it worse."

Ryan shakes his head. "I can't. Every time we sit still, I feel… I don't know… like something's slipping."

Summer glares at him. "And you're supposed to fix it? Or just stare at me?"

Ryan stops, meets her eyes, voice low. "Neither. I just… I see you avoiding everything. Pretending like you don't care."

Summer smirks, though it doesn't reach her eyes. "Then why do you care so much?"

Ryan frowns. "Because I do! You can deny it all you want, but I see you!"

Zyren rolls his eyes. "Finally someone's saying it."

Summer snaps. "Oh, and you think you're the only one who sees?"

The tension is sharp, like a blade. Everyone feels it.

Prince clears his throat, voice firm. "Okay, wait. We're all smart enough to know fighting isn't helping. But someone needs to ask—why can't we tell the police?"

Lyrelle pipes up, voice steady but sharp. "And risk the game turning on us harder? You really think it's that simple?"

Thorian nods. "Exactly. Outside help doesn't understand. It's not just rules, it's leverage."

Jason's jaw tightens. "We're drifting. Look at us."

He glances at Lyrelle, then at Prince. "We're all… avoiding each other. Even the ones who matter."

Prince exhales sharply. "We're afraid. That's it. Fear makes love silent and friendship quiet."

Kaida looks down at her phone, ignoring it. "It's feeding off this. Every glance we don't give. Every word we hide."

Ryan rubs his temples. "Then we either stop pretending… or we lose everything."

Summer's eyes flare. "Stop pretending what?"

Ryan doesn't answer at first. Then he mutters, "Everything we feel. Everything we're scared of. Including… us."

Zyren smirks slightly. "Ah, now it's getting interesting."

Summer glares. "Don't. Don't make this into a joke."

Jason exhales and mutters, almost to himself, "Saph would've hated all this silence…"

No one speaks for a beat.

Then he says it again, louder this time, voice cracking: "My girlfriend… she would've hated it."

The room freezes. Even Ryan stops pacing.

Summer bites her lip. "I—" she starts, then stops.

Lyrelle sits up straighter. "That's what I mean. We're all… hiding what we feel, letting fear decide for us."

Thorian leans closer to Kaida, hand hovering near hers. "We can't let it win. Not by ourselves, and not by letting this silence stretch."

Prince looks around at the group. "We've got love here. Anger. Fear. Tension. If we don't speak… we're done for. The game knows it. And it's using it."

Ryan takes a deep breath. "Then we stop pretending. Even if it hurts. Especially if it hurts."

The air is thick. Heavy. Every heart beating differently, yet all listening.

Kaida's phone buzzes. She doesn't move. She knows better.

Summer mutters, voice trembling, "It's waiting for us to break…"

Zyren leans back, smirk fading. "Or for us to choose."

Jason's eyes linger on the doorway, empty and haunted. "We're drifting… fast."

And somewhere, invisible, patient, the Shadow Game watches them all. Learning not just what they do… but who they're afraid to love, who they hide from, and who they might lose next.
