Chapter 18 - TRIAL BY QUEEN’S FIRE

Flames swallowed Aria whole.

For a moment, she felt nothing—no heat, no pain, no sound.

Only darkness.

A heavy silence pressed against her chest as if the world had vanished.

Then, slowly…

Light flickered around her.

Not normal fire.

This flame was alive.

It curled around her legs like a serpent, glowing different shades of red and gold, examining her, sensing her.

Aria gasped, stumbling back.

"W-Where am I…?"

Her voice echoed in the void.

The Trial wasn't just fire.

It was a different space—

a realm created by the Queen's power, shaped from ancient demon magic.

Outside, Kael slammed into the barrier again and again, roaring her name.

"ARIAAAA—!"

But his voice broke before it reached her fully.

She could feel his panic…

through the bond.

But inside the Trial, she was alone.

Completely.

---

Inside the Fire Realm

Aria took a shaky breath.

The fire pulsed once—

and the ground shaped itself beneath her feet.

Black stone.

Burning cracks.

Endless red sky.

She stood inside a circular arena made entirely of flame.

A figure emerged from the fire.

Aria stiffened.

Was it the Queen?

No.

It was a creature made of flame, tall and armored like a knight but burning from the inside out.

Its eyes glowed white-hot.

"The chosen must prove the heart," the creature spoke in a distorted voice.

Aria swallowed.

"I don't want to fight anything!"

The creature raised its burning sword.

"To stand beside the prince, you must withstand the flame that shaped him."

Aria took a step back.

"I'm HUMAN!"

The voice boomed:

"The mark made you more."

The creature charged.

Aria screamed—

And the world exploded in heat.

---

Outside the Trial — Kael Loses Control

Kael slammed into the fiery barrier again, flames erupting from his back.

"LET ME IN!"

Ezren held him with all his strength.

"Kael—STOP! The Trial reacts to your flame! If you lose control, she'll burn!"

Kael's voice cracked.

"She's ALONE in there! She can't survive it!"

Ezren hissed,

"THAT is the point! It tests HER, not you!"

Kael roared, ripping free.

His flames turned black around the edges.

Ezren's eyes widened.

"Oh no… Kael, don't use the forbidden flame—"

Kael shoved Ezren away.

"I'm not watching her die!"

The Queen watched her sons silently.

Then she spoke.

"You cannot save her, Kael."

Kael glared, trembling with fury and fear.

"She will die if you do nothing!"

The Queen's voice softened unexpectedly.

"If she was weak, she would have died the moment the mark awakened.

But she didn't."

Kael froze.

The Queen continued:

"If she was unworthy, the bond would have rejected her when you used the forbidden flame.

But it didn't."

Kael's breath shook.

"And if she cannot endure this Trial…"

The Queen met his eyes.

"…then she was never meant to stand beside you."

Kael felt something inside him break.

"She's not just someone meant to stand beside me…"

He whispered, voice cracking.

"She's everything to me."

Ezren looked away, jaw tightening.

The Queen's expression flickered—pain, then steel.

But she said nothing.

Inside the fire, Aria screamed.

Kael fell to his knees.

"Aria… please… fight…"

---

Aria vs The Flame Knight

Aria stumbled as the Flame Knight's strike hit the ground beside her, sending shockwaves through the arena.

She rolled away, coughing through the heat.

"I can't fight this! I'm not a warrior!"

The Flame Knight lifted its sword again.

The sky rumbled with fire.

"This test is not of strength."

Aria blinked through tears.

"Then what is it testing?!"

"Resolve."

The knight charged again.

Aria felt the heat closing in.

Sweat dripped down her neck, her hands trembling.

Her foot slipped—

she fell, sliding near the edge where the fire roared like a hungry beast.

"KAEL—!" she screamed instinctively.

Her voice echoed into the void.

Suddenly—

a faint warmth burst inside her chest.

A heartbeat.

Not hers.

Kael's.

His fear.

His desperation.

His love.

It surged through the bond like wildfire.

Aria gasped.

Her mark blazed bright red.

Not just glowing—

spreading.

Down her arm.

Across her ribs.

Up her neck.

The power felt like liquid fire running under her skin, but it didn't hurt.

The Flame Knight hesitated.

"Your heart… responds to his."

Aria's breathing steadied.

She got to her feet.

Not running this time.

Standing.

The knight charged again, faster, deadlier.

Aria raised her hand instinctively—

Her mark flared—

And a shield of red fire erupted in front of her, blocking the strike.

The knight staggered back.

Aria stared, shocked.

"I… did that?"

The knight knelt slowly.

"You are beginning to understand."

Aria's eyes widened.

"Understand what?"

"That the bond does not only make you his."

The Knight's fire dimmed reverently.

"It makes him yours."

Aria's heart pounded.

Outside, Kael gasped and clutched his chest.

He could feel it.

Her strength.

Her fire.

Her acceptance of the bond.

Ezren whispered, shocked:

"Her power… it's syncing with yours."

The Queen's eyes widened.

"The prophecy is moving faster than expected."

---

The Final Strike

Inside the Trial, the Flame Knight rose once more.

"One last test."

Aria braced herself.

The fire in the arena swirled violently, forming a tornado of flames around the Knight.

It raised its sword overhead.

"Do you accept the bond fully—"

Aria gasped, her chest tightening—

"—even if it means sharing his destiny?"

Kael shouted from outside:

"ARIA—DON'T ANSWER THAT!"

But she couldn't hear him.

The world was only fire and fate now.

Aria whispered:

"…Yes."

The Flame Knight charged.

Aria screamed—

Her mark burst—

A wave of blinding red fire exploded from her body, swallowing the entire Trial realm.

Outside, Kael was thrown backward by the shockwave.

Ezren shielded the council.

The Queen's eyes widened.

"…Impossible."

The flames receded—

And inside the center of the arena—

Aria stood unharmed.

The Knight knelt before her.

"You have passed."

The fire around her faded—

The Trial shattered—

And Aria fell forward—

Straight into Kael's arms outside the barrier.

He caught her, pulling her tight against him.

His voice broke.

"Aria… Aria, can you hear me?"

She opened her eyes weakly.

"Kael… I'm here."

Kael pulled her into his chest, trembling.

"You survived… you really survived…"

Aria smiled faintly.

"I told you… I'm not afraid… not if you're with me."

Kael held her like he'd never let go.

The Queen stepped closer.

Her eyes… softer now.

"The Trial accepts her."

Ezren smirked.

"So… the Bride lives."

The Queen nodded slowly.

"And the bond…

has begun."
