Chapter 22 - WHEN THE NORTH BEGINS TO BLEED

The air outside the palace was different—sharp, metallic, trembling with the promise of war.Kael didn't slow down until he reached the outer courtyard, where soldiers were forming ranks under torches burning with crimson light.

The eastern battalion—his battalion—waited for him.

Every soldier dropped to one knee as he approached.

"Prince Kael," they rumbled in unison, armor clattering.

But Kael barely heard them.

His mind was still inside the Sanctuary with Aria—weak, frightened, clinging to his arm like her life depended on it. The Sovereign's whisper echoed in his head.

"She will choose me."

Kael's flames flickered dangerously across his shoulders.

She would never choose the shadow. She would choose him.He would MAKE SURE OF IT—even if he had to tear the world apart.

Ezren's warning rang in his mind:"If she answers even once, the bond weakens. And you weaken with it."

No.

He wasn't losing her.Not to an ancient monster. Not to fate. Not to the shadows.

1. THE FIRST SIGHT OF THE BLACK BANNERS

A horn blasted from the far watchtower, reverberating like thunder.

Kael snapped from his thoughts and looked north.

The world beyond the palace walls was drowning in mist—cold, colorless, rolling down from the mountains.

But through the mist…

Dark shapes emerged.

Black banners snapping in the wind.

Each marked with the sigil of broken chains, painted in blood-red strokes.

Kael's flame pulsed.

"They're early," he muttered.

A scout sprinted forward."Your Highness! Their vanguard reached the lower ridge faster than expected. We estimate—"

Kael raised his hand.

"I can see."

And he could.

Dozens—no, hundreds—of shadow-cloaked soldiers marched with inhuman discipline, swords dripping with black mist. Their eyes glowed faintly, like embers dying inside skulls.

The first wave of the Chain-Breaker Cult.

Kael inhaled sharply.

Ezren's words echoed:"They worship the old throne. The Sovereign. The one who wants Aria."

Kael's flames burned hotter.

"You want her?" he murmured. "Come take her."

His fire erupted, spiraling around him in a crown of black-red flame.

Soldiers around him lifted their weapons, spirits ignited by his fury.

"For the Prince!" they roared."For the Flame!"

Kael stepped forward.

"FOR MY BRIDE."

The army roared as the ground trembled beneath them.

2. ARIA'S SIDE — WHISPERS IN THE SANCTUARY

Aria sat upright in the Lower Sanctuary, hands trembling. Ezren stood guard by the door, blade resting against his shoulder, eyes sharp.

"Relax," he said without turning around."Panicking helps no one."

Aria glared."I'm not panicking. I'm worried."

Ezren smirked. "Same thing."

Aria pushed herself off the dais. Her legs wobbled but she stayed upright. The silver thread in her mark pulsed faintly, matching Kael's distant heartbeat.

"He's fighting," she whispered.

Ezren nodded."He is."

"I can feel him…"

Ezren finally turned, serious now."That's Stage Two. The bond strengthens. You'll sense each other more. What he feels, you'll feel shadows of it. What you feel… he might feel harder."

Aria swallowed.

"What if that hurts him?"

Ezren's expression softened—rare.

"Then don't let yourself break. Kael's flames follow your heart. And right now?"

He tapped her mark lightly.

"Your fear can kill him."

Aria froze.

Ezren stepped closer.

"Listen carefully. Stay calm—even if the world shakes. Because if you panic? His flames will go wild. And uncontrolled demon fire can burn an entire battlefield… including Kael."

Aria's lips trembled.

"And if I stay calm?"

Ezren shrugged."Then he becomes unstoppable."

Aria pressed her hand to her chest.

"Then I'll be calm," she whispered.

Ezren snorted."Good luck with that when ancient shadow-gods start flirting with you."

Aria glared. "Ezren—"

A whisper slithered into the Sanctuary.

"Little Bride…"

Aria gasped.

Ezren spun, blade raised.

The shadows rippled along the walls.

"He fights… because of you…""He burns… because of you…""He breaks… because you make him hope…"

Aria clutched her head."Stop—! Stop talking!"

The voice chuckled darkly.

"You cannot silence destiny."

Ezren threw a dagger—the shadows split apart before the blade touched them.

Ezren growled,"That's not a memory. That's a live projection."

Aria trembled."It's him."

Ezren grabbed her wrist."DO NOT answer."

Aria shut her eyes tight, breathing hard.

She whispered—not to him, not to Ezren, but to herself—

"I choose Kael."

The whispers vanished instantly, like smoke scattered by wind.

Ezren let out a breath."Good. You passed the first call."

Aria sank slowly to her knees.

"This is only the beginning, isn't it?"

Ezren nodded.

"The Sovereign plays long games."

Aria's eyes darkened with resolve.

"So do I."

3. KAEL ON THE BATTLEFIELD

The north pass exploded into chaos.

Kael charged into battle like a raging storm. His flames roared outward, cutting through the first soldiers with terrifying speed.

Black-banner warriors screeched as the flames touched them—Kael's fire didn't burn flesh.

It burned soul.

Swords clashed. Shields shattered.

Kael moved like a demon shaped by the gods' anger.Every strike was a promise.Every flame was a vow.

"You won't touch her.""You won't take her.""You won't call to her."

A cult warrior lunged with a jagged blade.

Kael caught it with his bare hand—the blade melted under his flame.

Kael growled.

"You follow a dead throne."

The warrior snarled,"The Sovereign rises."

Kael's flames burst.

"Over my dead—"

But the warrior smiled.

"No. Over HIS request."

Kael froze.

"What?"

The cultist whispered:

"He calls for his Bride. And she listens."

Kael's blood ran cold.

"She DOES NOT listen."

The cultist chuckled.

"You did not see her in the vision. But we did."

Kael crushed the cultist's skull with one strike, flames erupting around him.

"Liar."

But doubt clawed his chest.

She wouldn't… right?She wouldn't choose anyone else…?

His flame flickered.

A dangerous sign.

A sign Aria felt instantly.

4. BACK TO ARIA — THE BOND REACTS

Aria jerked upright.

Ezren grabbed her."What happened?"

"Kael…" Aria whispered. "His fire—something's wrong. He hesitated."

Ezren swore.

"That means his emotions spiked. Something got under his skin."

Aria stood.

"I need to go to him."

Ezren blocked her with both arms.

"No. If you leave the Sanctuary? Every cultist in the realm will sense you."

Aria's eyes flooded with fear.

"But his flame—if it destabilizes—"

Ezren nodded grimly."You could kill him."

Aria's knees buckled.

Ezren steadied her.

"Your heartbeat needs to stay steady," he said. "You panic, Kael burns. You fear, Kael hesitates. You hurt…"

He didn't finish.

Aria whispered, "I'm trying…"

Ezren pressed her hand to her chest.

"Don't try. DECIDE."

Aria sucked in a sharp breath.

Her fear quieted.Her heartbeat steadied.

Ezren stepped back, stunned.

"Well, damn… She's actually mastering Phase Two already."

Aria wiped her eyes.

"Tell me how to help him."

Ezren nodded slowly.

"You stay alive. You stay calm. You stay HIS."

Aria nodded.

"I will."

5. KAEL'S DOUBT — AND THE SOVEREIGN'S ATTACK

Kael fought harder, faster, sparks scattering across the battlefield like a meteor shower.

But one seed of doubt had taken root—and doubt was poison to the bond.

"She listens.""She heard him.""She will choose him."

"No…" Kael murmured."She wouldn't…"

But the Sovereign heard his crack.

And he struck.

The mist above the battlefield thickened, swirling into a vortex.

Kael staggered as a cold hand—not physical, but mental—gripped his mind.

A dark whisper slithered through his skull:

"You burn for her.But she will kneel for me."

Kael screamed, gripping his head, flames exploding outward.

Soldiers fell back.

"Prince Kael—!!"

His flames raged uncontrolled, circling him like a storm.

The Sovereign's whisper grew deeper.

"Give her to me."

Kael roared—

"NEVER!"

But the shadows lunged.

6. ARIA'S AWAKENING — THE SECOND EVOLUTION

Inside the Sanctuary, Aria felt a sudden violent pull in her chest.

Like someone had yanked the bond with both hands.

"KAEL!"

She fell to her knees, clutching her mark.

Ezren rushed to her.

"Aria, breathe!"

"I can't—he's—he's drowning—"

The mark exploded with red light.

Ezren's eyes widened.

"Oh shit—!The second evolution!"

Aria screamed.

Fire burst from her palms, swirling upward like a tornado.

The Queen burst into the room.

"He's being attacked by the Sovereign," she hissed."Aria—the bond is ripping open—hold it together!"

"I'm trying—!"

"You're not trying hard enough," the Queen snarled.

Aria's scream deepened—but suddenly, a silver layer coated her flame.

Ezren shouted, "That's it—balance it! Focus on love, not fear!"

Aria gasped—

And in that moment, SHE SAW KAEL.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Spiritually.

He was on his knees in the battlefield, surrounded by darkness trying to strangle his flame.

Aria reached toward him—

"KAEL!!"

Her voice shattered through the bond.

Kael's eyes shot open.

Aria's voice echoed in his soul:

"I choose YOU."

Kael's flames erupted—shattering the Sovereign's shadow.

The sky split with light.

The cultists staggered back.

Kael stood, flames burning pure and bright.

"ARIA—!"

She whispered into the bond:

"I'm here."

7. THE TWIST — "WE FOUND HER."

Back in the Sanctuary—

Ezren exhaled.

"Good. The bond stabilized."

The Queen nodded. "She saved him."

Aria slumped in relief.

But outside—

A cult scout, hidden in the rocks, whispered into a black crystal:

"Confirming sight:The Blood Bride has awakened Stage Two."

Another voice answered:

"Good.We begin Phase One."

Aria's mark flickered.

Ezren noticed.

"…Aria? What's wrong?"

She whispered:

"Someone just said…'We found her.'"

Ezren's blood ran cold.

"Who found you?"

Aria swallowed.

There was a heartbeat of silence—

Then a whisper slithered from the shadows:

"We did."

The Sanctuary doors BOOMED—exploding inward—

And cult soldiers surged through in waves.

Ezren roared, flames exploding from his blade.

"ARIA—GET DOWN!"

Aria's mark ignited.

Ezren screamed:

"THEY'RE HERE FOR YOU!"

The Queen appeared, eyes blazing.

"Aria—RUN!"

Kael, miles away, felt the attack through the bond.

He roared—

"ARIAAAAAA—!!!"

And the chapter ends with:

The Sanctuary falling under siege. The cult breaking in.Aria's power exploding. And Kael sprinting toward her with flames that could burn the world.
