Chapter 17 - THE QUEEN OF FLAMES

The Hall of Chains had never been this silent.

The glowing pillars flickered nervously, as if they themselves sensed something terrifying approaching. The last pieces of the shattered seal lay scattered across the floor, crackling with dying magic.

Aria felt Kael's hand in hers—hot, trembling, desperate.

"Kael," she whispered, "who is coming?"

But Kael didn't answer.

His jaw was clenched so tight it looked painful. His eyes—usually fierce—were now shaken.

Ezren, standing a few steps ahead, let out a long breath.

"Well," he said with a resigned sigh, "of all people who could appear right after you broke the Hall of Chains… she had to be the one."

One of the councilors dropped to their knees.

"The Queen… she's here…"

Aria's heart stuttered.

Queen?

He never mentioned a Queen.

A soft clicking sound echoed from the darkness beyond the entrance.

Slow, steady, unhurried.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Each step sent a new wave of pressure through the hall. Even the air seemed to bow.

Kael stiffened beside Aria, and his grip on her tightened.

The clicking grew louder until a bright flame appeared in the shadows—glowing like molten gold.

Then she walked out.

The Demon Queen.

A woman too beautiful to be real, yet too terrifying to be gazed upon for long.

Her hair flowed behind her like fire captured in wind. Every strand glowed with molten gold as if lit from inside. Her crimson eyes were the kind of beautiful that burned—unforgiving, sharp, all-knowing.

Her armor shimmered with runes older than the demon kingdom itself, and flames drifted around her like petals.

Aria forgot to breathe.

Ezren bowed slightly—not out of respect, but caution.

The council bent entirely.

Kael did not bow.

But he lowered his gaze—something Aria had never seen him do.

The Queen stopped five steps away and looked directly at Aria.

"This is the human girl who broke the Hall of Chains," she said coldly.

Her voice was soft.

But the softness was scarier than a scream.

Aria swallowed hard.

"I… didn't mean to break anything. I—"

The Queen raised a finger.

And Aria's voice died.

Her lips moved, but no sound came out.

Kael's head snapped up.

"Mother, STOP."

The Queen flicked her fingers casually.

Aria gasped as her voice returned like she'd been drowning for minutes.

"I only wished," the Queen said calmly, "to hear her speak when I allow it."

Aria trembled.

Kael growled.

"If you silence her again," he snarled, "I'll—"

"You'll what?"

The Queen stepped closer, eyes narrowing.

"Threaten your own mother again, Kael? Use the forbidden flame on me? You already shame this family enough."

Kael froze.

Ezren muttered under his breath,

"Here we go…"

The Queen turned her full focus on Aria.

She walked around her slowly like a predator circling prey.

Aria stood rigid, fear prickling her skin.

The Queen's voice was cool and precise:

"You carry a mark no human should possess. A mark that was erased from existence. And yet here you stand, glowing with it."

Aria tried to steady her voice.

"I didn't choose the mark."

"No," the Queen replied, "but fate did."

She extended a hand—long fingers, glowing faintly.

"Mother—!"

Kael surged forward, grabbing Aria's arm, pulling her back.

The Queen didn't even look at him.

"This is not an attack, Kael."

Her hand dropped gently onto Aria's collarbone.

Aria inhaled sharply.

Her entire body lit with red light—her veins glowing like molten lines beneath her skin. Her mark flared, burning with intense pressure.

Not pain.

Not exactly.

Something deeper.

Like something ancient inside her was waking.

The Queen studied the reaction with interest.

But Kael grabbed Aria again, pulling her behind him.

"Enough!"

The Queen finally lifted her eyes toward him.

"No one touches the royal line without consequence," she said, "and yet she bears its mark."

Aria gasped softly.

Royal line?

Kael exhaled sharply, muscles tense.

The Queen turned her attention back to the council.

"Speak," she commanded.

The elder councilor crawled forward on trembling knees.

"Y-Your Majesty… s-she is the one from the erased prophecy—"

The Queen silenced him with a glance.

Ezren sighed.

"Well, this is fun."

The Queen faced Aria again.

"You broke a seal meant to bind monsters," the Queen said.

"Kael could not do that. Ezren could not do that. Even I could not do that."

Aria felt her stomach twist.

"But I'm… human."

The Queen laughed softly.

A cold, elegant laugh.

"That is what makes it interesting."

Kael stepped protectively in front of Aria.

"If you touch her again—"

The Queen raised a hand and Kael flew backward, slamming into a pillar.

"KAEL!" Aria screamed.

Ezren caught him before he fell.

"Kaal, calm down," Ezren hissed.

"You can't fight her, idiot."

Kael pushed him away.

"Don't tell me to calm down! She—"

"She's your mother," Ezren reminded.

"Unfortunately."

Aria ran to Kael's side.

He brushed her cheek with shaking fingers.

"I'm fine," he whispered, trying to hide the pain.

But his eyes were burning—panic and fury mixing.

The Queen watched them silently.

Then she spoke:

"Kael. You used the forbidden flame."

Kael stiffened.

"And you," she said to Aria, "survived its aura."

Aria swallowed.

The Queen nodded slowly.

"That means your bond is active."

Ezren's eyes widened.

"Mother, don't—"

"No," she continued.

"This is no ordinary bond."

Her eyes flashed.

"THIS is the ancient Blood-Bound connection."

A murmur spread across the council.

Aria looked at Kael.

Kael looked at her.

Their hearts pounded in sync.

Aria whispered,

"What… does that mean?"

The Queen took a step closer.

"It means your heart decides our fate."

Aria felt her knees weaken.

The Queen spread her arms.

"So, let us test your heart."

Kael stepped in front of Aria instantly.

"NO."

Flames spiraled from the Queen's fingertips.

"Oh, relax, Kael," she said.

"I am not going to kill her."

The flames danced around Aria's feet, forming a circle.

Aria looked down.

The fire didn't burn her.

Instead, it felt like warm light pulling her forward.

The Queen raised her hand.

"Aria of the Blood Mark," she declared,

"you will now face The Queen's Trial."

Kael lunged.

"STOP—!"

The Queen flicked her wrist.

A blast of royal fire threw Kael across the room.

He hit the ground hard, coughing blood.

"KAEL!" Aria screamed, trying to run to him.

Flames rose around her, blocking her path.

The Queen spoke:

"If you are truly a match for my son…

if you truly carry the power that broke chains and awakened forbidden flame…

then survive my fire."

Kael dragged himself up, furious.

"Mother, you're going to kill her—!"

Ezren held him back, eyes wide.

"It's not fire, Kael," he whispered urgently.

"It's the Markfire Trial."

Kael froze.

"What?" he breathed.

Ezren swallowed.

"If she survives… she is the real one."

Kael turned ghost-white.

"And if she doesn't—?"

Ezren's silence was the answer.

Aria looked at Kael, tears forming.

"Kael—!"

Kael roared her name:

"ARIAA—!!!"

And the flames swallowed her whole.
