Chapter 9 - SPOTLIGHT

And that was when he really saw her.

She was in the middle of the stage, the spotlight was on her as she swayed her hips from left to right, to the rhythm of the song.

Her eyes were closed, lips parted, her head pushed back a little, she moved as if she was the only one in the room. As if she owned the stage.

And that was when he noticed

 What she was wearing.

It looked nothing like what she was going through.

She was putting on a red gown, the slit of the gown parted as she swayed her hips from side to side, revealing her perfect legs, before closing again. Teasing with every move.

What caught him was not the dress, it was the way she wore the dress, like she was not trying to be seductive but she was without her knowing.

Damn he muttered under his breath she doesn't even know half the club is watching her.

A part of him knew she was going to regret all of this the following day, He wanted to go up that stage to drag her, protect her or something but he knew doing that would only make things worse.

 So he let her be.

He rested an elbow on the counter as he watched her the whole time while he continued to sip his drink.

He shot up when he saw a random guy approach her.

He clenched his jaw as the stranger placed his hands on her waist.

 ***

Elena froze. What do you think you are doing? She snapped in her drunken state.

Lucas was already walking towards them.

Take your dirty hands off me. Instead of him to leave his hand grabbed Elena's behind and before she could react the man was already on the floor.

 Her mouth widened in shock.

I suggest you walk away right now, because if you don't, you are going to spoil my night and I was having a pretty decent night. Lucas snapped with Vernon in his voice.

Are you okay he asked Elena concern written all over his face.

I was handling it just fine I didn't ask for your help. She said without looking at him.

I brought you here so I will be responsible for you.

She did not say a word after that, she just ignored him.

 ***

She nearly tripped over her own feet as she headed back to her seat. Before she could fall, strong hands caught her.

Her breath hitched as she looked up.

That was when she really looked at him.

Her vision was blurry from tears and alcohol.

Even in her disorganized state she couldn't help but notice how tall he was, his body looked like he had come out of a TV show.

His strong arms held her firmly yet gently. His face was striking, handsome with sharp features and a chiseled jaw line. His eyes stared at her, but she felt they were piercing into her soul.

She didn't say a word she just stared at him. And when he realized his hand was still holding her in place he let go immediately.

But his eyes…. They were glued on her.

 ***

Elena sat down on the barstool, her cheeks flushed from the dance from earlier, she ordered for another drink before Lucas could even suggest she had water.

Lucas sat on the stool beside her, giving her a little space.

When the bartender placed her drink on the table she gulped it all at once.

Slow down tigress, Lucas said, trust me you don't want tomorrow's hangover to be worse than what happened tonight.

Elena shot him a dead glare. What do you know about heart break.

He smirked sipping from his glass before speaking, enough to know your boyfriend is an asshole for letting you go.

After that Lucas didn't say a word, he just stayed close to her, so she wouldn't feel lonely.

For a while they just sat in silence, Lucas was sipping his drink, without staring too much.

Elena caught herself looking at him secretly, the way he sat, he looked so relaxed and confident, his hand rested on the counter.

Even in her drunken state she could tell he looked different from all the guys she had met.

Why do you look so calm, she muttered, her voice husky from the alcohol, like non of this seem to surprises you.

He turned his head slightly to look at her, maybe because I have a way of hiding it.

Her eyes stayed glued to him for too long.

The bartender passed her another drink, but Lucas hand moved first. He caught the glass before her his hand touching hers slightly. It's was planned but it sent shivers down her spine.

That's enough for today, he said softly, gesturing for the bartender to take the glass away. You will hate yourself by tomorrow.

Her lips parted, she was ready to disobey, but there was something about the way he said the word and the way he looked at her that didn't need for disobedience.

 She leaned back after that,

You look like trouble, and the tattoo on your neck is a proof, so why act all innocent.

Lucas leaned towards her his lips brushed her ears as he spoke.

You look like shit for someone who is supposed to have it all together all the time.

She turned to look at him, and to her surprise he was dangerously close, he was so close that she could literally smell his cologne

She moved slightly on the stool as her knees brushed against his thigh, it was an accident but she did not dare move.

their eyes locked. And just like that something in the air shifted.

Careful he said his voice deep, you are playing with fire.

Maybe I want to get burned, she replied still maintaining eye contact with him.

His hands moved to hers on the counter, from the corner of his eyes he could see the bartender looking at him, with an amused smile.

He leaned into her this time around, their lips almost touching, Elena blinked but did not move back.

He smiled before speaking, you are drunk let me get you home.
