The galaxy stood at a crossroads.
The Liberation of Naboo had ended.
The Trade Federation had suffered a humiliating defeat, its Viceroy arrested and brought before the Galactic Senate to answer for his crimes against the people of Naboo. Across the Republic, systems celebrated what many believed to be the triumph of justice over greed.
Yet victory had demanded a heavy price.
Grand Master Yoda had fallen.
For over eight centuries he had stood as the guiding light of the Jedi Order. Generations of Jedi had learned beneath his wisdom, and countless worlds had found comfort knowing that, somewhere within the Republic, the Grand Master watched over the peace they enjoyed.
His passing shook not only the Jedi...
...but the entire Republic.
On Coruscant, representatives from thousands of worlds gathered within the Jedi Temple to honor the life of one of the greatest guardians the galaxy had ever known.
No speeches were given.
No grand displays of celebration marked the occasion.
Only silence.
The Jedi believed that death was not an ending, but a return to the Force.
One by one, Masters, Knights, and Padawans approached to pay their respects.
Some bowed.
Others simply stood in quiet reflection.
Many had trained beneath Yoda.
Many owed the paths they now walked to his guidance.
His absence would be felt for generations to come.
The Force itself seemed quieter.
As though the galaxy mourned alongside them.
Yet while the Jedi mourned...
The Republic continued forward.
With the resignation of Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, the Senate had elected Senator Sheev Palpatine of Naboo as the Republic's new Supreme Chancellor.
His rise to office was welcomed throughout much of the galaxy.
To many, Palpatine represented stability during uncertain times.
His first actions as Chancellor reflected exactly that.
Working alongside respected senators such as Bail Organa of Alderaan, discussions began almost immediately on reforms that would reduce the growing political influence of the galaxy's largest corporate organizations.
The Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo had exposed dangerous flaws within the Republic.
Never again, many senators argued, should a corporation possess enough political authority to wage war against an innocent world.
Support for reform spread quickly through the Senate.
Hope, it seemed...
Had returned.
But hope alone could not erase the darkness gathering beyond the Republic's sight.
Within the Jedi Order, another question demanded an answer.
The Sith had returned.
For the first time in a thousand years, the ancient enemy of the Jedi had revealed itself once more.
Grand Master Yoda was dead.
Master Dooku had fallen in battle, his body never recovered despite the Order's search.
One Sith apprentice had been slain.
Another...
Far more powerful...
Remained somewhere within the galaxy.
The Jedi could no longer afford uncertainty.
The future of the Order would be decided by the choices made today.
High above the endless cityscape of Coruscant...
Within the sacred halls of the Jedi Temple...
The remaining members of the Jedi High Council gathered once more.
Much had changed.
And the decisions awaiting them...
Would shape the destiny of the galaxy itself.
_________________________________________
For centuries, one seat had remained occupied by the small green Jedi who had guided the Order through generations of peace.
Now...
Grand Master Yoda's chair sat vacant.
None of the Masters spoke of it.
Yet every one of them noticed.
Master Mace Windu slowly rose from his seat, his calm gaze sweeping across the chamber.
"The Council is assembled."
"The first matter before us..."
"...is the return of the Sith."
Silence settled over the room.
Even now, speaking those words aloud felt almost unnatural.
"The Sith have remained hidden for a millennium," Master Plo Koon said. "They will not reveal themselves so carelessly again."
"They have already accomplished something," added Master Saesee Tiin. "They struck at us when we were least prepared."
Master Even Piell folded his arms.
"And they succeeded in killing Grand Master Yoda."
The chamber fell quiet once more.
Mace finally spoke.
"Our greatest mistake was believing they no longer existed."
"We will not make that mistake again."
Master Oppo Rancisis nodded in agreement.
"If there are two Sith..."
"...then they are not acting alone."
"Someone has hidden them."
"Someone has supplied them."
"Someone has kept them beyond our sight."
"The question," Ki-Adi-Mundi said thoughtfully, "is where do we begin looking?"
Master Plo Koon leaned forward.
"We investigate everything."
"The Senate."
"The Outer Rim."
"The criminal syndicates."
"The corporate alliances."
"No possibility can be ignored."
Several Masters nodded.
Mace allowed the discussion to continue before speaking once more.
"From this day forward..."
"...no Jedi shall undertake missions alone."
The room looked toward him.
"The Sith hunt in pairs."
"We will answer in kind."
"Every assignment beyond Coruscant will consist of no fewer than two Jedi."
"If necessary, Padawans will accompany experienced Knights."
"If greater danger is expected..."
"...Masters will travel together."
Master Adi Gallia gave a slow nod.
"It will stretch our numbers."
"It will."
Mace agreed.
"But until we understand our enemy..."
"...we cannot afford to lose another Jedi."
The Council unanimously accepted the proposal.
Immediately, preparations began for investigative teams to be dispatched throughout the Republic.
Some would search ancient Sith worlds.
Others would monitor criminal organizations.
Others would quietly observe political movements within the Senate itself.
The Jedi would leave no corner of the galaxy unexplored.
Only once the matter had been settled did Mace move to the next subject.
"Our second matter concerns Padawan Khan Kage."
Several Masters looked toward one another.
Plo Koon spoke first.
"His conduct during the Naboo crisis was exemplary."
"He protected the Queen."
"Negotiated with local inhabitants."
"Recovered the means to continue the mission."
"Discovered a Force-sensitive child."
"And survived three encounters with a Sith."
Master Even Piell nodded.
"Not merely survived."
"He engaged the Sith Apprentice long enough to protect the mission."
Master Saesee Tiin added,
"He ultimately defeated the apprentice."
Ki-Adi-Mundi folded his hands.
"His actions cannot be questioned."
There was a brief pause before he continued.
"Although his emotions during the final battle concern me..."
Several Masters nodded quietly.
Mace answered.
"He had just witnessed the deaths of Grand Master Yoda and his own Master."
"No Padawan could remain perfectly detached."
"Even so," Plo Koon said, "he completed the mission."
"He fulfilled every duty expected of a Jedi."
Master Depa Billaba spoke for the first time.
"In truth..."
"He has endured more trials than most Jedi face before attaining Knighthood."
The chamber fell silent.
There was little left to debate.
Mace looked around the Council.
"Is there any Master who believes Padawan Khan Kage is unworthy of becoming a Jedi Knight?"
No one spoke.
Not even Ki-Adi-Mundi.
The silence itself became the answer.
Mace inclined his head.
"Then it is decided."
"Upon his recovery..."
"...Padawan Khan Kage shall be knighted."
For the first time since the Council had gathered...
The atmosphere lightened.
Only slightly.
It was not joy.
Nothing could erase what had happened on Naboo.
But amidst the grief...
There was hope.
Every Master in the chamber had watched Khan grow over the years.
They had watched him mature beneath Count Dooku's guidance.
They had watched him shoulder responsibilities far beyond what should have been expected of someone so young.
And now...
After enduring trials that would have broken many Jedi...
He had emerged stronger.
None of them believed he was ready to replace those they had lost.
No one could.
Yet...
As each Master looked toward the seat that had once belonged to Grand Master Yoda...
The same quiet thought crossed their minds.
Perhaps...
One day...
The future of the Order would rest safely in hands such as his.
No one voiced the thought aloud.
They simply carried it with them.
Mace allowed the moment to pass before continuing.
"Our next matter concerns the boy."
"Anakin Skywalker."
The chamber remained far quieter than before.
This discussion had already been held.
Master Yoda had made his wishes known before his passing.
Mace looked around the Council.
"Grand Master Yoda believed the boy should be given the opportunity to train."
"I believe we should honor that decision."
Several Masters nodded.
Even Ki-Adi-Mundi, though visibly hesitant, remained silent.
Out of respect for the Grand Master's final judgment...
He chose not to object.
Plo Koon spoke.
"The child has only just arrived."
"He has left behind the only life he has ever known."
"Time to adjust, he will need."
Mace agreed.
"For now, Anakin Skywalker will remain within the Temple."
"He will begin learning our customs and way of life."
"The matter of who shall train him..."
"...will be decided at a later time."
No objections were raised.
The decision was unanimous.
One more matter had been settled.
Now...
Only one remained.
The future leadership of the Jedi Order itself.
Silence settled over the Council Chamber once more.
Three matters had been decided.
The Sith had returned.
Padawan Khan Kage would be knighted.
Anakin Skywalker would remain within the Temple under the Council's care until the time came to decide his future.
Yet one final matter remained.
Perhaps the most difficult of all.
The empty seat at the head of the chamber seemed heavier than before.
No one wished to be the first to speak.
Eventually, Mace Windu broke the silence.
"There remains one final decision."
His gaze slowly moved across the chamber.
"The Order requires guidance."
No one misunderstood his meaning.
Master Yoda was gone.
The Jedi Order no longer had its Grand Master.
The room remained still.
No one volunteered.
No one even hinted toward themselves.
After a long silence, Ki-Adi-Mundi finally spoke.
"The Grand Master is not merely the oldest among us."
His calm voice echoed through the chamber.
"Nor simply the most powerful."
He folded his hands within his robes.
"The one acknowledged as Grand Master becomes the guiding light of the Order."
"The Jedi look to that individual not because they are commanded to..."
"...but because they trust their wisdom."
Several Masters quietly nodded.
Even Piell spoke next.
"It has always been so."
"There is no ambition in such recognition."
"Only responsibility."
Master Yaddle lowered her eyes for a brief moment before speaking.
"And responsibility cannot be claimed."
"It must already exist within the one we acknowledge."
Again...
Silence.
No one argued.
No one proposed themselves.
Each Master understood exactly what Yaddle meant.
Mace finally spoke once more.
"Then let us begin."
His eyes moved around the chamber.
"Who among us should now guide the Jedi through what lies ahead?"
For several moments...
No answer came.
Finally...
Ki-Adi-Mundi spoke.
"I believe Master Windu possesses the strength required."
Several Masters turned toward Mace.
Mace remained expressionless.
Before anyone else could answer, he slowly shook his head.
"My place remains as Master of the Order."
"My duty is to preserve discipline and unity within the Council."
"The burden of becoming the Order's spiritual guide belongs elsewhere."
No one seemed surprised by his answer.
If anything...
It only reinforced why the Council respected him.
He accepted responsibility.
Never authority for its own sake.
After another silence...
Several eyes naturally drifted toward Yaddle.
The ancient Jedi immediately understood.
A faint smile appeared across her face.
"You honor me."
She inclined her head respectfully.
"But my path now lies elsewhere."
"The next generation will require guidance."
"My place is among the younglings."
"To shape tomorrow's Jedi."
She looked around the chamber.
"Not to stand before them."
No one objected.
Everyone already knew how much time Yaddle devoted to teaching within the Temple.
Her wisdom would continue serving the Order.
Simply in another way.
The chamber grew quiet once more.
Then...
Even Piell spoke.
"Then perhaps..."
"...Master Plo Koon."
For the first time...
Every eye turned toward the Kel Dor Master.
Plo Koon looked almost uncomfortable beneath their attention.
"I seek no such acknowledgment."
His calm voice carried throughout the chamber.
"My duty remains the same regardless of what title others place upon me."
He paused.
"If another is better suited..."
"...then they should lead."
Mace watched him carefully.
"And if the Council believes you are the one best suited?"
Plo remained silent for several moments.
Finally...
He gave a single nod.
"Then I will accept that responsibility."
"Not because I desire it."
"But because the Jedi Order comes before myself."
His answer lingered throughout the chamber.
Simple.
Honest.
Without ambition.
Ki-Adi-Mundi quietly folded his hands.
"Throughout the Order, many already seek Master Plo's counsel."
"Knights."
"Padawans."
"Even Masters."
"They do so willingly."
"Not because they must."
"But because they trust his judgment."
Saesee Tiin gave a slow nod.
"I have witnessed the same."
Adi Gallia spoke next.
"His compassion has never weakened his discipline."
Eeth Koth added,
"And his discipline has never diminished his compassion."
Even Piell looked toward Plo.
"Few understand balance as he does."
Yarael Poof closed his eyes for a brief moment.
"The Force flows through him with remarkable clarity."
"He listens before he acts."
"And when he acts..."
"...he does so without hesitation."
For several moments...
No one spoke.
No one disagreed.
Mace slowly looked around the chamber.
"The decision must be unanimous."
One by one...
The Masters gave their approval.
Adi Gallia
Depa Billaba
Even Piell
Eeth Koth
Yarael Poof
Oppo Rancisis
Yaddle
Saesee Tiin
Ki-adi Mundi
Finally...
Mace himself.
Every voice had become one.
The chamber fell into complete silence.
Mace rose from his seat.
He turned toward Plo Koon.
"Master Plo Koon."
"The High Council acknowledges you as the Grand Master of the Jedi Order."
Plo lowered his head.
Not in triumph.
But in humility.
"I accept."
"I shall devote every remaining day of my life to preserving the light."
"To protecting peace."
"And to ensuring the Jedi never lose sight of who we are."
Around the chamber...
Each Master slowly rose to their feet.
No applause followed.
No celebration.
Only silent respect.
Outside the Temple windows...
Coruscant continued to move as it always had.
The Republic entered an uncertain future.
The Sith had returned.
The galaxy had begun to change.
Yet within the Jedi Temple...
Hope had not vanished.
It had simply found a new guardian.
