Chapter 40 - Knight of the Order

The Battle of Naboo had ended, but its consequences continued to spread across the Republic.

With the election of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, a wave of political reform swept through the Senate. Alongside Senator Bail Organa and many like-minded senators, new legislation sought to limit the influence the great corporate powers had accumulated over generations.

Within the Senate Rotunda, debates that once centered on trade now stretched late into the night.

Representatives of the Trade Federation openly opposed the proposals.

The Banking Clan warned of economic instability.

Leaders of the Techno Union argued that excessive regulation would cripple industrial production throughout the Mid Rim.

Behind closed doors...

Meetings became quieter.

Alliances became less certain.

Votes that had once been predictable no longer were.

Across countless worlds, citizens followed the debates with growing interest.

Some celebrated the Senate's newfound resolve.

Others quietly wondered what would happen should the corporations decide they no longer wished to cooperate.

The Republic had secured peace on Naboo...

Yet throughout the galaxy...

Conversations had already begun that would one day change everything.

The bustling sounds of Coruscant slowly faded beneath the towering spires of the Jedi Temple.

Deep within its highest chambers...

Far from the bustling halls where younglings trained and Padawans studied...

A single room remained shrouded in darkness.

No sunlight entered.

No decorations adorned its walls.

Only silence.

At the center of the chamber stood Khan Kage.

His breathing was steady.

His posture unwavering.

Around him...

Eleven figures stood in a perfect circle.

The Jedi High Council.

Each Master remained motionless, hidden within the darkness.

For several long moments...

No one spoke.

The silence itself carried meaning.

A final moment for reflection.

A final moment as a Padawan.

Then...

One by one...

A lightsaber ignited.

A deep green blade sprang to life.

Then another.

Blue.

Purple.

Yellow.

Again.

And again.

Until eleven lightsabers illuminated the chamber.

The darkness gave way to a circle of light.

The glow reflected across the polished stone floor, bathing Khan in shades of blue, green, purple, and gold.

He stood at the center...

Surrounded not by warriors...

But by generations of knowledge.

Generations of sacrifice.

Generations of Jedi.

Grand Master Plo Koon slowly stepped forward.

His blue lightsaber remained lowered at his side.

He stopped before Khan.

Neither spoke.

Khan lowered his head.

His Padawan braid rested over his shoulder.

The symbol of years spent learning.

Of discipline.

Of mistakes.

Of growth.

Plo Koon carefully reached toward it.

With one precise motion...

His lightsaber passed through the braid.

The small lock of braided hair drifted gently to the floor.

Silence returned.

The braid remained where it had fallen.

Its purpose fulfilled.

Plo Koon deactivated his lightsaber.

One by one...

The other Council Masters followed.

Until only the chamber's dim lighting remained.

Plo Koon looked upon the young man before him.

No longer a Padawan.

His calm voice broke the silence.

"From this day forward..."

"...you walk your own path."

"The lessons of your masters shall remain with you."

"But the choices you make..."

"...will now be your own."

He placed a gentle hand upon Khan's shoulder.

"Khan Kage."

"By the unanimous acknowledgment of the Jedi High Council..."

"I welcome you into the ranks of the Jedi Knights."

A quiet breath escaped the room.

Not relief.

Recognition.

Plo Koon's eyes remained fixed upon him.

"Congratulations..."

"...Jedi Knight Khan Kage."

For the first time since the tragedy on Naboo...

Khan slowly raised his head.

His expression remained solemn.

The pain had not vanished.

The grief had not faded.

But beneath it...

There was resolve.

He inclined his head before the Council.

"I will honor the trust you have placed in me."

No more words were needed.

Around the circle...

The Masters bowed their heads in silent acknowledgment.

The ceremony was complete.

A Padawan had entered the chamber.

A Jedi Knight departed.

The doors to the ceremony chamber slowly opened.

Khan stepped out into the quiet halls of the Jedi Temple.

For the first time in many years...

He no longer wore the braid of a Padawan.

He stood alone for only a few moments before the chamber doors opened once more.

Grand Master Plo Koon and Master Mace Windu emerged together.

Both Masters walked toward him.

Mace was the first to speak.

"Congratulations, Knight Kage."

Khan inclined his head respectfully.

"Thank you, Master."

"You have earned it," Mace continued. "Few Jedi have endured the trials you have before receiving the title of Knight."

Khan remained quiet.

He did not feel accomplished.

Only that more responsibility had been placed upon his shoulders.

Plo Koon looked toward him.

"The path before you has changed."

"No longer will your decisions belong to your Master."

"They now belong to you."

"I understand, Grand Master."

The three Jedi began walking together through the quiet corridors of the Temple.

The halls were calm, most Jedi continuing about their daily responsibilities, unaware that another Knight had just joined their ranks.

After a short silence, Khan finally spoke.

"Grand Master... Master Windu..."

"There is something I wished to discuss."

Both Masters turned their attention toward him.

"Now that I have become a Jedi Knight, I intend to continue traveling throughout the Republic."

"There is still much I have yet to learn."

He paused briefly.

"The Sith Lord we encountered..."

"I was powerless before him."

"I cannot allow that to happen again."

"I must become stronger."

"So that the next time we meet..."

"I will be able to protect those beside me."

Mace nodded slowly.

"There are few within the Order who could have stood against such an opponent."

"That does not change the outcome," Khan replied.

"I still failed."

The hallway fell quiet again.

Eventually, Plo Koon answered.

"A worthy goal."

"However..."

"The Council has already reached a decision."

Khan looked toward him.

"In light of the Sith's return..."

"No Jedi shall travel alone."

"The enemy hides within the shadows."

"We know too little of them."

"Until we understand the threat before us..."

"Every Knight will travel alongside another."

Mace continued.

"Investigation teams will be dispatched throughout the Republic."

"We cannot risk losing another Jedi to an unseen enemy."

Khan nodded.

"I understand."

If that was the Council's judgment, he would respect it.

Plo Koon glanced toward him.

"There is another possibility."

Khan waited.

"Travel with those you already trust."

"Kit Fisto."

"Aayla Secura."

"They too have recently completed their Trials."

"They are now Jedi Knights."

"You have fought beside one another before."

"You understand each other's strengths."

Khan found himself smiling ever so slightly.

"It has been a long time since the three of us trained together."

"Then perhaps," Plo Koon replied, "it is time once again."

By now, they had arrived outside Master Windu's private chambers.

Mace opened the door and motioned for them to enter.

The room was modest, containing little more than a desk, several shelves filled with holocrons and texts, and a large window overlooking the endless skyline of Coruscant.

Once inside, Plo Koon reached beneath his robes.

He carefully withdrew a lightsaber.

A curved hilt of polished silver.

Khan immediately recognized it.

Master Dooku's lightsaber.

For a long moment...

No one spoke.

Plo Koon looked down at the weapon.

"It was recovered during our investigation on Naboo."

"The only thing we recovered from your Master."

His voice remained calm.

"My original intention was to place it within the Temple Archives."

"A tribute to the sacrifice of one of the Order's greatest Jedi."

He stepped toward Khan.

"But..."

"I believe it belongs elsewhere."

He extended the lightsaber toward him.

"It belonged to your Master."

"I believe it should now belong to his final apprentice."

Khan hesitated.

Slowly...

He accepted it.

The polished metal felt familiar beneath his fingertips.

It was not heavy.

Yet...

Holding it felt different than holding any other lightsaber.

He remembered standing opposite Dooku during countless training sessions.

He remembered every lesson.

Every correction.

Every word of guidance.

The weapon carried none of those memories...

Yet somehow...

It carried all of them.

Khan gently held the lightsaber with both hands.

"I'll carry it with honor."

Plo Koon gave a small nod.

"I know you will."

A/N: sorry for the short chapter, but I wanted to drop something today. I mostly wanted to give thanks to everyone!
