Chapter 38 - Life continues forward, as it always does.

The Battle of Naboo had come to an end.

The Gungan Grand Army had held the Trade Federation's droid forces long enough to accomplish their mission. Though greatly outnumbered, they had refused to retreat, standing firm behind their shield generators until reinforcements finally arrived.

The newly elected Supreme Chancellor, Sheev Palpatine, had acted swiftly. At his request, a coalition fleet from several Republic member worlds entered the Naboo system. Though the Republic possessed no standing military, the combined defense forces of loyal planets proved more than enough to overwhelm the Trade Federation blockade.

With the destruction of the Federation's command Lucrehulk, every battle droid on the surface shut down simultaneously.

The Gungan warriors, battered but victorious, marched alongside the Naboo Security Forces into Theed.

Within the Royal Palace, Queen Padmé Amidala had successfully captured Viceroy Nute Gunray, bringing an end to the occupation of her world.

For the people of Naboo, peace had finally returned.

But beneath the palace...

Victory had come at a terrible price.

Master Yoda had fallen.

Master Dooku had been lost.

And somewhere within the endless depths of the reactor complex, a Sith Lord had vanished into the shadows.

The war for Naboo was over.

The war for the galaxy had only just begun.

"No!"

Khan's voice echoed through the room as he jolted upright.

A sharp pain exploded through his ribs.

"...Ah!"

He instinctively grabbed his side, his face twisting in pain as his body protested the sudden movement. Every breath sent another wave of agony through his chest.

Slowly, his breathing steadied.

His eyes darted around the unfamiliar room.

Elegant white stone walls reflected the afternoon sunlight pouring through tall arched windows. Rich blue and gold tapestries bearing the royal crest of Naboo hung neatly between polished marble pillars. Delicate vases filled with fresh flowers rested upon carved wooden tables, their sweet fragrance filling the chamber.

He was lying in a large bed covered by clean linen.

His upper body had been wrapped in fresh bandages.

Several healing patches had been placed across his arms and shoulders where burns and cuts had only recently begun to close.

Khan raised a trembling hand to his forehead.

"What..."

His head throbbed violently.

"Where am I...?"

Fragments of memory drifted through his mind.

The reactor.

The duel.

Master Yoda.

Master...

Before he could gather the scattered pieces together, the bedroom doors slowly opened.

A tall figure entered quietly.

Master Mace Windu.

His expression remained as composed as ever, yet there was an unmistakable heaviness behind his eyes.

"I'm glad to see you have awakened, Khan."

Khan looked toward him.

"...Master?"

His voice sounded distant, almost hollow.

"What happened?"

Mace studied him carefully.

"You do not remember?"

The question lingered only for a moment.

Then—

Everything returned.

The reactor.

The crimson blade.

Master Yoda standing against the Sith Lord.

Master Dooku's desperate charge.

Lightning.

The scream.

The fall.

Khan's breathing became uneven.

His hand slowly covered his face.

His shoulders trembled.

"I..."

His voice cracked.

"I couldn't do anything..."

The words barely escaped him.

"I couldn't save them."

Silence filled the room.

Khan lowered his head.

"I'm so weak."

Those three words carried more pain than any wound covering his body.

Mace remained where he stood.

For all his wisdom...

For all his years as a Jedi Master...

There were no perfect words for moments like this.

"You should not place this burden upon yourself," Mace finally said, his voice calm but firm. "The responsibility is ours as well. We underestimated the Sith. We believed them gone, and because of that belief, we were unprepared."

Khan slowly shook his head.

"No..."

He looked up, his eyes red from unshed tears.

"You don't understand."

His voice had become quieter.

"I watched my master die."

He swallowed hard.

"I saw Master Yoda lying there..."

His breathing faltered again.

"I couldn't protect either of them."

The memories refused to stop.

Every second replayed with painful clarity.

"I wasn't even close."

His hands clenched tightly against the bedsheets.

"I gave everything I had..."

"And it wasn't enough."

His gaze drifted toward the floor.

"The Sith Lord defeated me like I was nothing."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"I should have died there too."

Another painful silence followed.

"The fact that he left me alive..."

Khan closed his eyes.

"...means I wasn't even worth killing."

The room felt unbearably quiet.

Mace looked upon the sixteen-year-old before him.

Not as a Padawan.

Not as a promising Jedi.

But as a boy who had witnessed horrors few Jedi experienced in an entire lifetime.

He had witnessed the death of Qui-Gon Jinn.

Then, only days later, he had watched both the Grand Master of the Jedi Order and his own master fall before his eyes.

Any Jedi would struggle beneath such weight.

Especially one so young.

Mace stepped closer.

"The Sith Lord sought victory, not glory."

Khan remained silent.

"You survived because you fought until you no longer could."

Still...

Khan said nothing.

Mace knew the words had not reached him.

Not yet.

Perhaps they never would.

"For now," Mace said quietly, "rest."

He turned toward the doorway.

"There is much that must be done."

The Jedi Master reached the threshold before stopping.

Without looking back, he spoke one final time.

"Master Yoda would not wish for you to carry guilt."

A brief pause.

"Nor would Master Dooku."

Another silence settled between them.

"Trust in the Force."

His voice softened.

"And, when you are ready..."

"...trust in yourself once more."

The doors slid shut behind him.

Khan remained alone.

The afternoon sunlight continued to spill across the room.

Outside, he could faintly hear the joyful celebration of Naboo's people.

Music.

Laughter.

Life returning to normal.

Inside...

None of it reached him.

Khan simply stared at his trembling hands.

The hands that had failed to save his master.

The hands that had failed to protect the Grand Master of the Jedi Order.

For the first time since becoming a Jedi...

He no longer knew if he deserved to call himself one.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Meanwhile, beneath the Royal Palace of Theed...

The reactor complex had been placed under complete lockdown.

The deafening clash of lightsabers had long since faded, replaced only by the constant hum of Naboo's immense plasma generators. Emergency lights cast long shadows across the maintenance tunnels, revealing scorched walls, collapsed walkways, and deep lightsaber scars carved into the durasteel.

Master Plo Koon entered the reactor complex alongside several Jedi investigators and members of Naboo Security.

No one spoke.

The Force itself felt unsettled.

Whatever had transpired here had left behind more questions than answers.

A Naboo technician approached carrying a datapad.

"Master Plo."

"Were you able to recover any security recordings?" Plo asked.

The technician nodded.

"Only fragments. Most of the surveillance network was destroyed during the battle."

He activated the hologram.

The first recording flickered into existence.

Static distorted much of the image.

Queen Amidala and her security forces hurried away from the hangar.

Moments later...

Three Jedi stepped forward.

Master Yoda.

Master Dooku.

Padawan Khan Kage.

Standing opposite them...

Two cloaked figures.

One ignited a double-bladed crimson lightsaber.

The other remained completely concealed beneath dark robes.

The recording ended.

Another camera activated.

The duel had already begun.

The five combatants moved through the maintenance corridors at incredible speed, forcing one another deeper into the reactor complex.

The image shook violently before dissolving into static.

Another recording appeared.

For only a brief moment.

The Sith apprentice and Padawan Khan disappeared beneath one of the lower bridges.

Master Dooku immediately attempted to pursue them—

Before the cloaked Sith Lord intercepted him.

The image froze.

Static.

The final recovered recording flickered to life.

Only a few seconds remained.

Master Dooku's body was suddenly hurled through the corridor, engulfed in brilliant blue lightning before disappearing into one of the lower reactor shafts.

The camera shook violently.

Then...

Darkness.

One final image appeared.

Padawan Khan lay motionless upon the floor.

Standing over him...

The cloaked Sith Lord.

The figure remained perfectly still.

His face hidden beneath the shadow of his hood.

Before anything else could be seen...

The recording ended.

Silence filled the chamber.

The technician slowly lowered the projection.

"That is everything we were able to recover."

Plo remained silent.

There was no footage showing Master Yoda's final moments.

No recording of what had happened after Dooku disappeared.

No explanation for why Padawan Khan had been left alive.

Only fragments.

Pieces of a battle that no longer existed.

One of the Jedi investigators stepped forward.

"Master Yoda's body was recovered in the reactor chamber."

Plo nodded.

"And Padawan Khan?"

"He was found unconscious in the same chamber."

"So both remained there."

"Yes, Master."

Plo folded his hands within his sleeves.

Whatever had happened after the recordings ended...

Only Khan knew.

And he had yet to speak.

The investigation continued deeper into the reactor complex.

Several maintenance crews searched the lower reactor tunnels while Jedi investigators examined every damaged walkway they could safely access.

Hours passed.

Finally, one of the engineers returned.

"Master Plo."

"Were you able to locate the body?"

The engineer lowered his head.

"No."

"We searched every accessible maintenance tunnel beneath the reactor."

"And?"

"Nothing."

Plo slowly walked toward the edge of one of the immense reactor shafts.

He stared into the endless blue abyss below.

The depths seemed to swallow all light.

If Master Dooku had truly fallen here...

There might never be anything left to recover.

"I'm sorry, Master."

For a long moment, Plo simply stared into the endless depths.

Master Dooku had been one of the Order's finest.

A brilliant duelist.

A wise teacher.

A respected member of the Jedi.

Now...

Even a proper farewell had been denied him.

Plo lowered his head briefly.

"May the Force guide you, old friend."

The search continued.

Some time later, another voice echoed through the tunnels.

"Master Plo!"

Plo immediately made his way toward the call.

One of the Jedi investigators stood overlooking a collapsed maintenance platform.

"There."

Nearly twenty meters below, lodged against twisted metal, rested the lower half of a body.

Black robes.

Armored boots.

A utility belt.

Nothing more.

"The Sith apprentice," one of the investigators quietly said.

Plo studied the remains.

"There is no lightsaber."

The investigator shook his head.

"No weapon."

"And the upper body?"

"We searched the surrounding tunnels."

"Nothing."

No one spoke.

Master Plo Koon stared at the lower half of the Sith apprentice for a long moment.

"So... one Sith has indeed fallen," he murmured quietly.

One of the Jedi investigators crouched beside the body, carefully examining the clean cauterized wound.

"A lightsaber strike," the investigator reported. "The cut is precise."

Plo nodded.

"Padawan Khan must have defeated him."

It was one small victory amidst an overwhelming tragedy.

As the investigators prepared to move on, another Jedi called out from farther down one of the maintenance walkways.

"Master Plo... over here."

Plo immediately walked toward the voice.

Resting against the durasteel flooring was a severed human hand.

Still tightly gripped within its fingers was the elegant curved-hilt lightsaber of Jedi Master Dooku.

The corridor fell silent.

For several long moments, no one spoke.

Plo slowly knelt before it.

"...Master Dooku."

The hand had been severed cleanly at the wrist. Beyond it, the tunnel descended into darkness. There was no blood trail. No body. Nothing but the endless depths of the reactor complex.

One of the investigators quietly asked,

"Should we continue searching?"

Plo looked into the abyss.

He wanted to.

Every instinct told him not to abandon a fellow Jedi.

Yet after hours of searching, they had found no trace beyond the recordings. Whatever had happened after Dooku disappeared into the darkness remained a mystery.

Plo gently pried the lightsaber from Dooku's lifeless fingers.

"We will continue searching another day."

He clipped the curved hilt to his own belt for safekeeping.

"Master Dooku deserves to return home."

His voice softened.

"Even if... only his lightsaber can."

With one final glance into the endless darkness below, Master Plo Koon turned away.

The investigation had yielded more questions than answers.

The Sith Master had vanished without a trace.

Count Dooku's body had never been found.

Only his lightsaber—and the hand that still refused to let go of it—remained behind.

The Jedi investigators quietly followed Plo back toward the surface, carrying with them the few answers they had managed to uncover, and far too many mysteries that remained unsolved.

With the occupation of Naboo having finally come to an end, the people rejoiced.

Throughout the streets of Theed, cheers echoed from every direction. Families who had spent days living beneath the shadow of the Trade Federation embraced one another as the last inactive battle droids were gathered and hauled away. Naboo engineers and volunteers worked together to clear the damaged streets while medics tended to the wounded.

Children laughed as they cautiously wandered back into the plazas that had once been filled with enemy patrols.

The city was alive once again.

Flags bearing the royal crest of Naboo fluttered proudly from balconies as musicians slowly returned to the streets, filling the air with melodies that had been silenced during the occupation.

Hope had returned to Naboo.

Yet only a short distance away, inside the palace courtyard, there was no celebration.

The Jedi stood together in complete silence.

The contrast was striking.

Beyond the palace walls, an entire world rejoiced.

Within them...

The Order mourned.

A simple white bier rested in the center of the courtyard.

Upon it lay the small body of Grand Master Yoda, dressed in the traditional robes of the Jedi Order, his hands peacefully folded together.

Every Jedi present lowered their heads.

Master Mace Windu.

Master Plo Koon.

Master Ki-Adi-Mundi.

Master Saesee Tiin.

Master Even Piell.

No words were spoken.

None were needed.

For generations, Yoda had been the guiding light of the Jedi Order.

To many, he was more than the Grand Master.

He had been their teacher.

Their mentor.

Their friend.

The morning had dawned beneath a clear blue sky.

Yet as the ceremony began, the sunlight slowly faded.

Clouds drifted across the heavens, covering the warmth of the sun.

A cool breeze swept quietly through the palace gardens, rustling robes and banners alike.

Even the birds that normally filled Theed with song fell strangely silent.

Several Naboo guards exchanged uncertain glances.

"It wasn't supposed to rain today..." one whispered.

No rain came.

Only silence.

Master Plo Koon slowly looked toward the darkened sky.

"The Force..." he murmured quietly.

"It mourns."

The Jedi carefully lifted the bier.

Step by step, they carried Grand Master Yoda toward the Republic transport that would return him to Coruscant.

Only after the transport doors closed behind him did a single ray of sunlight finally pierce through the clouds once more.

The wind settled.

The birds slowly began to sing again.

Life continued forward.

As it always would.

Standing near one of the Republic transports, Khan silently watched as Grand Master Yoda's body was carefully loaded aboard.

His expression never changed.

He simply watched.

The same distant look had remained on his face ever since he had awakened.

Master Windu's words echoed through his mind.

"Trust in the Force... and in yourself."

He wanted to.

He truly did.

But every time he closed his eyes...

He saw Master Dooku.

He saw Master Yoda.

He saw the Sith Lord smiling.

"Khan."

The familiar voice gently pulled him back to reality.

He turned.

Padme stood several steps away, no longer wearing the elaborate ceremonial robes of the Queen of Naboo. Instead, she wore a simple Naboo traveling outfit, her expression carrying the same quiet exhaustion he felt.

For a brief moment...

Neither of them spoke.

"I heard you're leaving soon," Padme finally said.

"We are."

Another silence settled between them.

"I wanted to thank you."

"There is no need."

"There is."

She took another step forward.

"You protected me."

"You protected Naboo."

"You saved my people."

Khan lowered his gaze.

"We failed."

Padme blinked.

"We stopped the invasion."

"We lost two of the greatest Jedi our Order has ever known."

His voice remained calm.

Too calm.

Padme noticed it immediately.

There was no anger.

No grief.

No frustration.

Only exhaustion.

"Khan..."

"You should be proud today."

He slowly looked toward the city below.

Naboo had begun to heal.

The streets were once again filled with life.

People embraced one another.

Children laughed.

The nightmare was finally over.

"Naboo is free."

"And yet..." Padme said quietly, "...you don't seem to feel any victory."

Khan remained silent for several moments.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"I keep wondering..."

"...what I could have done differently."

Padme looked at him.

"You did everything you could."

"So did Master Qui-Gon."

"So did Master Yoda."

A brief pause.

"So did my master."

His eyes never left the city.

"And they still died."

The words lingered between them.

Padme wanted to tell him it wasn't his fault.

She wanted to tell him that no one could have changed what happened.

But as she looked at him...

She realized he wasn't looking for comfort.

He was searching for answers she couldn't give.

Instead...

She simply stood beside him.

Together they looked over the city in silence.

The wind gently stirred between them.

After what felt like several minutes, Khan finally broke the silence.

"The Republic needs you now more than ever."

Padme gave a small nod.

"And the Jedi need you."

For the first time, the corner of Khan's mouth moved.

Not into a smile.

Into something closer to acceptance.

"They need someone stronger."

Before Padme could answer, one of the nearby Jedi approached.

"Padawan Khan."

"The transports are ready."

Khan inclined his head.

"I should go."

Padme looked at him for a long moment.

"I suppose..."

"...this isn't goodbye."

"No."

He finally met her eyes.

"Our paths will cross again."

"I hope so."

Khan gave a respectful bow.

"May the Force be with you, Your Majesty."

The words were sincere.

But there was a formality behind them that had never existed before.

Not coldness.

Not resentment.

Distance.

A wall he hadn't realized he had begun building around himself.

Padme watched him walk toward the transport.

For some reason...

That hurt more than if he had shouted.

She had met Khan as a young Jedi who smiled easily.

Who trusted others without hesitation.

Who carried hope wherever he went.

The one boarding that Republic transport still walked with the same determination.

But something had changed.

Not in his stride.

Not in his voice.

In his spirit.

As the transport doors slowly closed behind him, Padme couldn't help but wonder...

Whether the Khan who had first arrived on Naboo...

...would ever truly return.
