Chapter 45 - Hidden lead part 2

The sands of Tatooine hold many secrets.

Far beyond the bustling streets of Mos Espa, slave traders, smugglers, and raiders carve out lives beyond the reach of the Republic.

After uncovering the trail of a mysterious syndicate...

Three Jedi Knights race across the desert.

Every passing moment brings the kidnapped children farther from home.

And hidden behind the actions of common criminals...

A far greater darkness quietly watches.

The tracks stretched endlessly across the desert.

The morning sun had begun its slow climb over Tatooine's endless dunes, its light casting long shadows across the sand.

No one spoke.

There was nothing left to say.

Marco's empty shelter lingered in each of their minds.

Khan walked at the front.

His eyes never left the trail.

Behind him...

Kit and Aayla remained equally silent.

The usual jokes had disappeared.

The Force carried only one certainty.

The children were still alive.

For now.

Eventually the trail ended at a small encampment hidden among weathered cliffs.

"There."

Khan pointed toward several figures unloading cargo.

Without another word...

The three Jedi surged through the drifting cloud of sand.

Blue lights flashed.

Blaster fire ceased almost as quickly as it had begun.

Within moments...

The battlefield fell silent.

The remaining criminals slowly dropped their weapons, realizing resistance was pointless.

The encampment had fallen.

Around the camp stood crude buildings assembled from scavenged durasteel and weathered stone. Cargo crates lay scattered between them, their markings long since scraped away to hide their origins.

Khan slowly deactivated his lightsaber.

The familiar hum faded into silence.

He secured it to his belt.

Beside it rested another hilt.

Master Dooku's lightsaber.

For only an instant, the polished metal caught the fading sunlight before disappearing beneath the folds of his robes.

Before him...

One of the surviving criminals glared defiantly.

Unlike the others...

A strange mark was branded onto the side of his neck.

A black eye.

Its single yellow pupil seemed almost alive.

Khan committed the symbol to memory before taking another step.

"Where are the children?"

The man smiled.

"You wanna be heroes..."

"You always arrive too late."

"I asked you a question."

The criminal laughed.

"You'll never fi—"

His words suddenly stopped.

The smile vanished.

Confusion spread across his face.

His breathing became uneven.

He reached toward his chest.

Around the camp...

The other captured criminals froze.

One staggered backward.

Another collapsed onto one knee.

A third looked around in panic as though searching for someone that wasn't there.

Then...

They all began to scream.

Not in pain...

In terror.

Their voices echoed across the empty desert.

Kit's expression immediately hardened.

"...What's happening?"

No one answered.

Dark veins slowly spread beneath the skin of the nearest captive.

His eyes widened.

The color drained from his face.

Within moments...

His body withered before their eyes.

It was as though something invisible was pulling the very life from him.

One after another...

The others suffered the same fate.

Some reached toward the sky.

Others clawed desperately at the sand.

None survived.

Silence returned.

Only the desert wind remained.

Even it seemed colder somehow.

Khan slowly approached the nearest body.

He knelt.

Two fingers rested lightly against the man's neck.

Nothing.

No wound.

No poison.

No sign of disease.

Only a lifeless shell.

Aayla stood several steps away, unable to hide the unease in her voice.

"...I've never seen anything like this."

Kit remained unusually quiet.

For once...

No joke came.

Khan's eyes remained fixed upon the corpse.

"This wasn't natural."

He stood once more.

His gaze drifted toward the strange tattoo.

The black eye...

The yellow pupil...

It felt less like the mark of a gang...

And more like the symbol of something far older.

Something hidden.

Something watching.

Aayla finally broke the silence, already searching through the camp.

"If they won't tell us..."

"Perhaps they left something behind."

She began opening crates, searching abandoned shelters, and examining scattered datapads.

After several minutes, she called out.

"Khan."

He walked over.

"I found traces."

She pointed toward a small shelter tucked against the canyon wall.

Several tiny sleeping mats rested inside.

"They were here."

She looked toward the desert beyond the camp.

"But they were moved."

"Recently."

Kit crouched beside a series of tracks leading away from the encampment.

"They left in a hurry."

He brushed sand away from one of the prints.

"And whoever they're working for..."

"...just made sure no one could talk."

For a long moment...

The three Jedi simply stood there.

The mystery surrounding the missing children had only grown deeper.

The three Jedi continued following the trail stretching deeper into the desert.

For several minutes...

Only the sound of shifting sand accompanied them.

__________________________________________

The trail wound through the rocky desert until towering canyon walls rose before them.

Khan slowly raised a hand.

The three Jedi immediately came to a stop.

Below...

Hidden between the canyon walls...

A smuggling camp had been carved into the stone itself.

A medium-sized transport rested near the center of the encampment, its loading ramp lowered as crates and supplies were hauled aboard.

Scattered around the camp stood armed guards bearing the same black eye marked with a yellow pupil that they had seen at the previous hideout.

But what caught Khan's attention...

Were the cages.

Dozens of them.

His eyes swept across the prisoners.

Every single one...

Was a child.

Some sat quietly with frightened expressions.

Others held onto younger children, trying to comfort them.

None of them could have been older than fifteen.

Khan's gaze shifted from cage to cage.

Then...

He found them.

Marco.

The young pickpocket sat beside his three friends, all four squeezed into one of the cages near the transport.

Relief flickered across Khan's face.

At least they were still alive.

His eyes continued scanning the camp.

No adults.

Not a single one.

The thought lingered only for a moment before he set it aside.

There would be time to ask questions later.

Right now...

The children came first.

Khan crouched behind the rocks as Kit and Aayla joined him.

"About thirty guards," Aayla whispered after a quick count.

"And far too many children caught in the middle," Kit added.

Khan nodded.

"If they realize they're cornered..."

"...they'll use the children."

Neither Jedi argued.

The three of them already knew what had to be done.

Khan looked toward his friends.

"I'll draw their attention."

Kit's grin slowly returned.

"Which means we get the fun part."

"You get the quiet part," Aayla corrected.

Kit sighed dramatically.

"There goes all my excitement."

Despite herself...

Aayla smiled.

Khan allowed the corner of his mouth to rise ever so slightly.

"When I move..."

"Don't leave them time to react."

Both Jedi nodded.

Without another word...

Kit and Aayla disappeared into the maze of canyon rocks, silently circling toward opposite sides of the camp.

Khan waited.

He felt them through the Force.

He waited until both had reached their positions.

Khan calmly descended the rocky slope and walked into the camp as though he had wandered there by accident.

Several syndicate members immediately turned toward him.

Conversations stopped.

Hands drifted toward blasters.

Khan looked around before scratching the back of his head.

"Excuse me."

"I seem to have gotten a little lost."

He smiled politely.

"Would any of you happen to know which way the nearest city with a transportation port is?"

Several of the smugglers exchanged confused looks.

"...What?"

One of the men, dressed in sturdier armor than the rest and wearing the same black eye insignia embroidered across his shoulder, stepped forward.

His expression quickly hardened.

"I don't know who you are..."

"...but you walked into the wrong camp."

His hand moved toward the blaster at his hip.

Before he could draw—

The Force surged.

The syndicate leader was violently pulled across the camp.

He barely had time to gasp before Khan caught him by the collar.

A blue lightsaber ignited.

Snap-hiss.

Its glowing blade stopped against the man's throat.

The entire camp froze.

Blasters were instantly raised.

Dozens of them.

Khan's expression never changed.

"I recommend..."

"...that you surrender."

No shouting.

No threats.

Just quiet certainty.

Around the camp, the smugglers hesitated.

None of them dared fire.

One wrong shot...

...and their leader would be the first to die.

Hidden among the rocky walls surrounding the camp...

Two shadows moved.

Kit Fisto slipped silently behind one of the outer guards.

A precise strike to the back of the neck.

The man collapsed without making a sound.

A few meters away...

Aayla Secura caught another sentry before he could turn.

She lowered him gently to the ground before disappearing behind another stack of crates.

One by one...

The outer guards vanished.

None of those surrounding Khan noticed.

Their attention remained fixed on the lone Jedi standing in the middle of the camp.

Sweat slowly formed on the syndicate leader's brow.

"W-Who are you?"

"A Jedi."

The answer only made the man's fear grow.

Time continued to pass.

Another guard disappeared.

Then another.

Then another.

The circle surrounding Khan slowly became thinner.

Until...

The final two guards standing behind the others suddenly crumpled to the ground.

Before anyone realized what had happened—

Kit and Aayla emerged from opposite sides of the camp.

Lightsabers ignited.

Within seconds...

The remaining smugglers found themselves completely surrounded.

Blasters clattered onto the sand.

The camp fell silent.

Khan deactivated his lightsaber.

The man in his grasp nearly collapsed from relief.

"I hope," Khan said calmly, "you're more willing to answer questions than your friends were."

"I-I'll tell you everything!"

The words rushed from the man's mouth.

"You don't understand! We don't even know who we're working for! We just receive orders through—"

He stopped.

His eyes widened.

His breathing became ragged.

Khan's expression sharpened.

"...What's wrong?"

The man clutched at his chest.

His body trembled violently.

Dark veins spread beneath his skin.

"N-No..."

"Please..."

"I don't want to—"

His voice broke apart.

Life slowly faded from his eyes.

The man's body went limp.

Khan caught him before he struck the ground.

Silence settled over the camp.

Kit frowned.

"...Not again."

Aayla slowly knelt beside the corpse, studying it.

"There are no wounds."

"No poison."

"No sign of a struggle."

Khan stared at the lifeless face.

It was identical to the others.

Someone...

Or something...

Had silenced him before he could speak.

A cold breeze drifted through the canyon.

For just a brief instant...

Khan felt the faintest ripple in the Force.

Ancient.

Unnatural.

Khan knelt beside the first cage.

With a twist of the control mechanism, the lock disengaged.

The small door slowly swung open.

For several moments...

None of the children moved.

Many simply stared.

Unsure whether what they were seeing was real.

"It... it's okay," Khan said gently.

"You're safe now."

The words finally reached them.

One little girl burst into tears as she ran into Aayla's arms.

Another boy collapsed onto the sand, crying openly.

Others simply looked around in disbelief.

One by one...

The cages opened.

The silence that had filled the camp gave way to laughter...

Crying...

And relief.

Kit rubbed the back of his head as several younger children gathered around him.

One small boy looked up with wide eyes.

"Are... are you really a Jedi?"

Kit grinned.

"So I've been told."

Another child pointed toward the lightsaber hanging from his belt.

"Can you really stop blaster bolts?"

Kit shrugged.

"When I'm paying attention."

A few of the children giggled.

For the first time since arriving...

The camp no longer felt like a prison.

Only the final cage remained.

Marco stood quietly behind its bars.

Khan reached forward and released the final lock.

The boy slowly stepped outside.

For a moment...

Neither of them spoke.

Marco lowered his head.

"I thought no one was gonna come for us."

Khan rested a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"It's a Jedi's duty to protect the people of the galaxy"

"Now let's get you and your friends home Marco"

"...Thanks."

He hesitated.

"And..."

"...I'm sorry."

"I shouldn't have stolen from you."

"I didn't know you were a Jedi."

Khan smiled faintly.

"Even if I wasn't..."

"You shouldn't steal from anyone."

Marco rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"...Yeah."

"I figured you'd say that."

Khan rested a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"Come on."

"Let's get everyone home."

A short time later...

The smugglers' transport lifted off from the canyon floor.

Khan guided the ship back toward Mos Espa while Kit kept the children entertained, somehow turning every question into another story.

Aayla, meanwhile, searched through the ship's navigation logs.

Most of the records had already been erased.

Cargo manifests...

Communications...

Flight records...

Almost everything had been wiped clean.

"...Nothing."

She sighed before opening one final file.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Wait..."

"There is one thing."

Khan glanced back from the cockpit.

"What is it?"

"A set of hyperspace coordinates."

"No destination."

"No name."

"Just coordinates."

She quietly saved the file onto her datapad.

"It may be nothing."

Khan shook his head.

"Or it may be our first real lead."

As the twin suns began their slow descent toward the horizon...

The captured transport descended over Mos Espa.

Its engines echoed across the city as curious eyes turned toward the unfamiliar vessel.

People slowly stepped out of their homes and shops.

Merchants paused their work.

Mechanics wiped grease from their hands.

Even those passing through the streets stopped to watch.

No one knew why a strange transport had landed.

The boarding ramp slowly lowered.

For a brief moment...

Nothing happened.

Then...

A small child stepped onto the ramp.

Another followed.

Then another.

Soon dozens of children began making their way down the transport.

Silence swept through the gathered crowd.

No one could quite believe what they were seeing.

A woman suddenly gasped.

"Ryn!"

Without another thought, she rushed forward through the crowd.

A young boy looked up.

"...Mom?"

The woman threw her arms around him, tears immediately streaming down her face.

"I thought..."

"I thought I'd lost you..."

Nearby, another voice cried out.

"That's my daughter!"

A father ran forward, dropping to his knees as a little girl collided into him.

More voices followed.

Parents called out names.

Children recognized familiar faces.

One reunion became another.

Then another.

The once quiet landing platform filled with laughter...

Tears...

And relieved cries that echoed throughout Mos Espa.

Life on Tatooine was unforgiving.

People disappeared.

People died.

Sometimes...

They simply never came home.

Many standing there had already begun mourning children they believed they would never see again.

Yet today...

Hope had returned with them.

Standing a short distance away, Khan quietly watched the reunions unfold.

Kit folded his arms with a satisfied smile.

"Worth the heat."

Aayla smiled softly.

"I thought you hated this planet."

"I still do."

"...But this part's nice."

The growing commotion eventually caught the attention of another familiar face.

Watto floated over from his junk shop, looking thoroughly annoyed.

"What's all this noise about now?"

His eyes drifted past the crowd.

Then landed on the transport.

His expression immediately changed.

"Hmm..."

Without another word, he floated toward it, circling the ship slowly.

He knocked against the hull.

"Needs work."

He peeked inside.

"Lots of work."

Khan walked over.

"So..."

"Interested?"

Watto looked toward him.

"You always know how to show up with expensive problems."

Kit leaned toward Aayla.

"I think that's the closest he'll ever come to giving someone a compliment."

Watto shot him an irritated look.

"Quiet, fish."

Kit raised both hands innocently.

"I'm just observing."

After several minutes of loud bargaining...

Both finally reached an agreement.

Watto grumbled as he transferred the credits.

"You're a terrible business partner."

"So I've been told," Khan replied.

Without hesitation...

Khan turned and walked back toward the gathered families.

One by one...

He handed the money to those whose children had been taken.

No speeches.

No recognition.

Only quiet acts of kindness.

Some tried to refuse.

Others could only stare in disbelief.

Khan simply smiled.

"Use it to give them a better tomorrow."

As evening settled over Mos Espa...

Marco slowly approached.

The other three children remained close behind him.

Lina peeked curiously from behind Marco's shoulder.

Teko quietly observed everything.

Jace remained his usual silent self, though his eyes no longer carried quite as much suspicion.

Khan reached into his satchel before holding out a small datapad.

Marco blinked.

"What's this?"

"Knowledge."

The boy looked at him, confused.

Khan smiled.

"If you dedicate yourself to learning..."

"...those skills will carry you much farther than stealing ever will."

Marco carefully accepted the datapad.

As though it were the most valuable thing he had ever held.

"I..."

"I won't waste it."

"I know."

Khan nodded once before turning toward the waiting Jedi shuttle.

Kit and Aayla were already preparing for departure.

Behind him...

Marco looked down at the datapad.

Then toward the departing Jedi.

For the first time in his life...

His future no longer felt decided by the streets of Mos Espa.

Far above the desert...

Three Jedi prepared to continue their journey.

And hidden safely within Aayla's datapad...

A single set of coordinates quietly waited.

The first thread...

Leading toward something far greater.
