Chapter 1 - Chapter 1- The tale of the beastmen

" The heavenly fire consumed the entire realm, and not even one of those beasts could quench it. Many lost their lives and so the surviving ones decided to settle in the next realm...." The wild haired woman trailed off, her eyes gleaming at the small toddlers that sat before her, intrigued by her story.

" The next realm which was ours....Earth". She threw her hands in the air for the dramatic effect and one could see the children scamper back in fear.

Of course, Maria enjoyed every second of it " And once they've regained their strength back, they started terrorizing the humans. Because to them, they were superior, faster, stronger, ethereal. And let's not forget…" She leaned closer, lowering her voice. "They're immortal."

" Non perishable... of course, they'd feel superior so they claimed the human world as theirs but of course, we declined and they led to the war that claimed lives of millions of humans". She paused with a grimace on her face at the now crying face of the children" Shhhhhhhh....at least we fought and we can still —

" Oh God, Maria. Don't tell me you're still at this?". A voice came from the entrance of the small house and Maria froze, before meekingly turning to the slim frame girl standing at the entrance of the house with a scowl on her face.

Her usual yellow gown adorned her petite body and even though it was faded and a little tattered, it still managed to make her look as alluring as she always did. But perhaps, it's not the gown doing the job but the way her pearly white hair framed her small face or the way the sunlight danced in her skin, making it glow. Or even the way it made her misty green eyes look transparent and glass like.

All in all, Freya is a very attractive lady and even though Maria has seen her...raised her since she was a teeny weeny child, she managed to get her breath taken away anytime she looked at her.

" Freya...y-you're back early today". A wide, nervous smile formed on her face as she ushered the girl in, trying to distract her from the toddlers that sat on the floor bawling their eyes out.

But of course, Freya didn't fall for it and she paused in the middle of the room, folding her arms " You know it's not gonna do any good scaring these young ones. I won't be there when their mamas come to fight you".

Maria laughed, scratching her neck " I just thought it'd be better to —

" Fill their head with what is happening in the world so when they grow up, they'll have the mindset to fight and not run so they can finally save us from this hell? Haha, real funny. " She laughed but there was no hint of playfulness in her eyes " The adult now can't even do it ...our ancestors didn't but this young ones can?".

" They can if they tried". Maria argued even when she knew it was futile. Freya was already in front of the toddlers and ushering them out of the house.

When they finally left, she collapsed on the small wooden chair by the wall and she rested her head on it, closing her eyes.

She looked really exhausted and Maria tiptoed to her " What's wrong? Did anything happen at the farm?".

She raised her head up and in her misty eyes you could see some hint of tears in it but she wouldn't let it fall. Freya would never let her tears out " They stole our yield. After working hours and hours, days and days... someone got there before us and stole it!".

Maria could now understand she had looked so angry and even her could feel anger bubbling up in her stomach at the news. The village could barely get food because they were scared to go out and get discovered by the beasts so it had become a thing to steal from each other farms ." What are we going to do now? We don't have much...we don't have anything to sustain ourself on again".

Freya eyes hardened , her fist clenching" Theres still some that haven't ferment, I'll go at midnight. I won't let anyone get there before me again".

Maria knew Freya is never one to back out, NEVER. She taught her that way though she have to admit, the girl was born stubborn at heart. And that was a rare character at this age because humans... including her have submitted to the power of the beast and it was refreshing to see someone like her.

She silently hoped in her heart that their village will continue to remain hidden from the beasts and that Freya would be shielded away from the monstrous and cruel nature from those shape shifting immortal.

" I'll go with you" she said and when she saw her mouth open to protest, she shush her " If we are two, it'll be easier to take in anyone that tries to overpower us and steal our yield". Sadly, that was what the world have become. How in hell will human even stand for ourselves if we don't even trust each other.

" But what about tonight? We have nothing to eat" she threw her hand up in the air in clear frustration " ..and you need to take your medicine. How would you do that on an empty stomach? I swear I should have—

" Should have what? Try to find who took it and fight them on your own? We both know how that end up last time". Maria snapped

" Last time was because he had a weapon...I could take him on if you remove that factor" she grit her teeth , not backing down. She had fire in her eyes when she speaks of that day but Maria knew she still feel fear whenever she sees that scar she had on her lap.

" One day would not kill us, Freya. And about my drugs, I'm very sure missing one day would not kill me either. Midnight, we'll get the yields, I promise". She promised even though she was not sure of the kind of ' tomorrow' they'll face.
