Chapter 2 - Hunt

I was running through the old streets surrounded by broken buildings. I gave a glance at my watch, and it was already 05:43 PM.

'17 minutes more.'

A voice came from behind me, "Lucian, how long are you going to run like this? Just surrender, and we may be able to solve this disaster."

Behind me was a woman wearing a tight black suit, wearing black glasses, her hair flowing in the air. She is one of the Elites of Night Rangers. It has been almost 13 days since all of this began.

I took a quick turn and entered one of the broken malls. As I was just entering, I saw two more people in black joining her. If not for my quick reaction, she might have almost caught me.

I quickly jumped through a few broken walls, moving deeper into the mall. Soon after, three of them also came in. I took another look at my watch again. It was 05:48 PM.

'Almost done.'

I continue to move inside this mall, buying a few more minutes. The footsteps quickly came from behind; these guys still haven't given up, even when the time is almost up.

I was running zig-zag, with some random turns. They continued to chase through every single corner without letting me breathe properly. I stopped and looked at the surroundings; three of them had finally cornered me.

"I don't think I can escape now. I should surrender."

I looked at them with an exhausted smile. While they stared at me coldly, their bodies vanishing like ghosts.

I lay down on the ground, looking at my watch. It was 06:00 PM.

'Six hours of Hunt before that chase of life began again.'

After a few minutes of rest, I heard a familiar sound. Quickly standing up, I took out a long steel knife, carrying it in my hand. I quickly jumped through these racks and saw a black giant rat munching on a wooden rack. I quickly dashed behind, swinging my knife, chopping off his head smoothly, and quickly retreating, barely saving myself from the black blood.

'Fuck, these monsters are really stinky. No matter how many I killed, I still can't get used to it.'

After taking a long breath, I cut open the rat's body, taking out a small stone from its head. Before moving to the next target. These rats are the most common and easiest target to hunt at night, but they are not that useful for my current self. Right now, if I want to improve quickly, I need to kill a few advanced-grade monsters.

I continued to hunt these rats for a while, also getting my hands on 2 intermediate-grade Night Walkers. These Night Walkers are a special kind of humanoid monsters; among all the intermediate monsters, they are the easiest ones. In the past, I killed many Basic and Intermediate monsters, but I still have only killed one Advanced-grade monster, which was also because of Little Bird's help.

Maybe today my luck was good; I actually heard a terrifying roar, which carried a glimmer of hope. I quickly woke up the Little Bird sleeping in my backpack cause dealing with this advanced grade monster is still not possible for me.

"Squeak… Squeak…"

The bird chirping appeared in such a dread atmosphere that it was really calming.

"Little Guy, today, we are going to hunt a big guy. Are you ready?"

He quickly nodded his head, like a smart kid.

"Okay, you will wait here till I go out myself and distract him. You will look for the right opportunity to deliver a deadly blow."

After explaining my plan, I quickly walked out of the mall while Little Guy flew into the air, following behind, making enough distance not to be noticed by the monster.

'Well, it would have been better if our roles were reversed, but unfortunately, I don't even have a good weapon that can inflict lethal damage to an advanced grade monster, even killing an Intermediate monster is like cutting a 100-year-old tree with a kitchen knife.'

Outside was completely dark, with slight moonlight illuminating the broken building; the whole city was like ruins, with shadows wandering everywhere, and giant shadows stood in the street munching on a broken bus.

It was like a giant Night Walker, but with a more sturdy and bigger body. It didn't even notice my presence, continued to munch on its favourite school bus. I threw a stone at his big basketball-like eyes.

"Roar…"

After infuriating him successfully, I quickly started to run, going straight to the nearest petrol pump, which was only 2 kilometres away from here. I ran straight through inside the buildings while the giant directly came breaking these buildings like cardboard.

I looked into the sky. Little bird was following behind, maintaining enough distance. So, this giant won't turn to her. I continued to run, and in less than a minute, the petrol pump also came into my sight.

I ran straight towards it, waving my hand signalling Little Bird to be ready to launch his attack. As I entered the petrol pump, I ran straight past it at full speed, without even looking back. Just as I ran past the Petrol pump, A loud explosion followed by a massive force threw me forward. A sea of flames came from behind, almost burning my clothes. I quickly stood, throwing my burning shirt away.

When I turned to look behind, A truly horrific sight, the fire was everywhere, street cars and buildings, everything was burning, it wasn't even the deadliest sight. The most terrifying was the petrol pump where true sea fire was burning flames taller than these buildings, and amid these destructive flames was a screaming giant, smashing things in the surroundings, and spreading the fire everywhere.

I decided to maintain a bit more distance, not to get caught in the last moment by this monster. I swiftly moved almost half a kilometre away, standing on a tall building's roof, watching the giant smashing the surrounding buildings. Upon closer inspection, I also notice the giant's eyes, which were bleeding, and a fiery bird moving within the flames, continuously attacking the giant.

'Today's win goes to this Little Guy. If not for him, I don't even know how I would have survived these days.'
