The sky was covered with a blanket of stars, flickering, and gave the feeling of an unknown calmness. I stood in the ruined city observing this world's changes not as part of it but from the perspective of an outsider. My gaze was bleak, just like this world.
'When I was forced to carry this hope on my shoulder, I knew it wouldn't be easy. Until… I saw true horror hidden behind that gate. Now, I have lost the key and the little bird.'
"Roar…"
I lifted my gaze, looking at the monster spawning one after another. I turned around, leaving this place.
I was moving through a ruined street, thinking of how I would explain myself. I continued to walk through this chaos unknowingly; no monsters were coming closer to me.
Suddenly, I heard a loud explosion coming from the north, making halt in my steps. When I turned around, I saw light; the golden light was illuminating the darkness of the night.
'This light… It can't be…"
I dashed towards the direction from which the explosion and that golden light came. I had a few doubts in my heart. Maybe I am not that late, one last chance.
As I was heading in there, I heard a few more explosions. In less than a minute, I stood there hiding behind the broken wall, staring at the battle going on in front.
At the centre of the battleground was a Golden gate with a carving of to Phoenix on both sides of the pillars of the gate, covered in ancient runes.
Beside the gate stood a boy wearing a black shirt and pants too casual for his deadly pitch black pupilless eyes. His black hair drifted in the wind, and his skin was pale like the body came out form the cold storage. Opposite to him stood a woman wearing a black dress with some golden outlines. Her red lips, golden eyes and white skin made her look like an angel from the sky. If not for the crimson necklaces around her neck.
I had seen this necklace before when I was in those ruins; there was the picture of a woman with the same exact necklace worshipping the Golden Gate.
"Do you think anyone is qualified to meet our lord? Give me the key, and I will let you be a part of our lord's awakening ceremony." The woman spoke in a sweet voice, which made me feel obliged to follow her order; luckily, I was able to resist the urge in my heart.
Kai remained expressionless, as if her words had zero effect on him. His dark gaze fixed on the woman.
His figure vanished from his place, appearing right next to the woman. As I was expecting the woman to retaliate, her body turned into black shadow merging with the surroundings.
Her cryptic laughter echoed in the atmosphere, followed by the monster's cries. The ground broke, and a huge skeleton hand stretched out, aiming at the Kai. As he dodged one, more and more hands started to stretch from the ground, followed by the phantoms attacking from the sky. With his speed, avoiding these blows was quite easy. but things seemed to be getting more dangerous.
The ground turned into a black liquid like tar, with a rotten smell. But when he was about to touch the ground, two black wings sprouted on his back, letting him escape the purse of his hand and whatever the ground had turned into.
As he flew in the sky with black wings made up of the same darkness, his eyes were. After he stepped into the air, the phantoms became restless, attacking him mindlessly. Only to give him a better opportunity to kill them, one after another phantom started to fall from the sky. Once their body came into contact with the black substance on the ground, those hands quickly dragged the bodies inside.
In less than a minute, the whole sky was clear, all the phantoms were gone, but something else had also entered the battlefield. The ground had come to life, transforming into a creature made up of corpses, black substance dripping from its body and thousands of hands stretching from its body.
Kai was just staring blankly at this corpse mountain, extending his hand towards it. I saw a small ice crystal flickering in the cold blue light at the tip of his fingers. With just a simple flick of his finger, it shot at the colossal corpse monster.
Once it touched the corpse monster, its whole body froze instantly, turning into an ice sculpture. This massive piece of art appeared to be from another world because the horror it carries is undeniable. Even though its whole body was frozen, I still felt disgust when looking at it.
The crack started to appear in the ice, and one after another, thousands of cracks formed in a second, and then it all broke into tiny crystal shards reflecting the moonlight, creating the rain of icy crystals.
"Hehe…" An ominous laughter of the woman echoed, but her figure was nowhere to be seen.
"You really are something, being able to devour those mythical creatures' blood and still alive, truly worth the praise." The woman spoke in a playful tone.
Kai ignored her and went straight towards the gate, but when he touched the golden gate, black chains descended from the sky, wrapping around his body.
"Haha…" A heretic laugh filled the air, followed by a massive figure descending from the sky.
'Fuck… what the hell is happening. Didn't Kai kill him in the ruins? How many misunderstandings I had, I almost did nothing except for being delusional.'
'Now, everything I had done became completely meaningless. He is alive, and Kai is also out. From whom the hell was I saving the world from?'
My head started to hurt again. Once I saw the truth, I knew nothing was in my hands to begin with. The only thing I was doing was imagining the world was revolving around me.
