Chapter 1 - 1 - The first

The Ashen District never slept, though the people living in it often wished it would. Even at dawn, the streets were choked with smoke from old factories, the tang of rust, and the faint stench of burned plastics. Concrete towers, cracked and stained by decades of neglect, loomed over narrow alleys like silent sentinels, indifferent to the misery of the people below.

Lucien Morningstar pulled his threadbare cloak tighter around his shoulders and stumbled through the alley. The morning chill bit into his bones, gnawing at muscles already stiff from the night's makeshift bedding—a patchwork of cardboard and discarded rags on the cold ground of the scrapyard. His stomach protested with sharp pangs, a familiar companion he'd learned to ignore. Hunger had become a rhythm in his life, like the rising and setting of the sun—always present, always cruel.

He paused for a moment, glancing up at the distant towers of the Upper District. Shimmering glass and steel bathed in sunlight, reflecting lives he had only glimpsed in passing: laughter, abundance, freedom. Up there, life seemed effortless. Down here, it was a daily struggle just to survive.

Lucien's hand brushed against a rusted pipe for balance as he continued walking. He avoided eye contact with the scavengers and stray beasts that prowled the streets, keeping his head low. Every day was a contest of endurance—who could last another hour without being robbed, beaten, or starved. And today felt no different, until something caught his eye.

Amidst the broken metal and shattered glass of the alley, a faint blue glow flickered. Lucien frowned and leaned closer. A smartphone, cracked and half-buried in debris, emitted a soft, pulsing light. Devices were not unusual here; discarded electronics littered every corner of the district. But this one… hummed with a strange energy, almost alive.

He hesitated. The rational part of his mind screamed that it was probably just another useless piece of trash. But the glow… it called to him, warm and insistent.

With a cautious hand, he picked it up. The screen flared to life, displaying lines of text that shimmered as though written in light rather than pixels.

"Welcome, User. Lifestyle Sign-In System activated. Reward sequence initiated."

Lucien recoiled, heart hammering. His fingers trembled as he tapped the screen. Nothing happened at first. Then, as if responding to his touch, the device projected a small holographic interface into the air before him. Floating icons, charts, and a glowing button labeled Sign In appeared, suspended in midair.

A calm, digital voice resonated, soft yet authoritative:

"Daily Sign-In available. Sign in now to receive your first reward. Reward will shape your lifestyle and growth."

Lucien's mind raced. "Lifestyle… growth? I… I don't understand."

"User: Sign in?"

Instinctively, he pressed the button. The holographic interface brightened, and an energy unlike anything he'd felt before coursed through his veins. A tingling warmth spread from his chest to his limbs, clearing the fog of exhaustion that had enveloped him for as long as he could remember. Muscles that ached with years of toil felt alive, responsive, awakened.

The screen updated almost immediately:

"Day 1 Reward: Vitality +5 | Hunger Resistance +2 | Minor Strength Boost"

Lucien staggered backward, disbelief and awe warring inside him. His body felt… lighter. Stronger. He flexed his fingers experimentally. They obeyed with ease, his joints smooth where stiffness had long reigned.

He glanced at his reflection in a puddle beside him. The grime and bruises remained, but there was something new in his eyes—a spark that had not existed before. It was a fragile ember, tiny and tentative, yet unmistakably there.

"This… this can't be real," he whispered. His voice was hoarse, cracking under the weight of hope he hadn't realized he carried.

"User: Lucien Morningstar. Daily Sign-In complete. Consistency is the path to transformation. Reward unlocks evolve with each consecutive day signed in."

Lucien sank to the ground, clutching the device like a lifeline. Questions swirled in his mind, but one truth crystallized: this… this was his chance. His life, which had been a monotony of survival and despair, had suddenly changed.

If this is real… I can be stronger. I can fight back. I can… be more.

The first reward was small. A minor boost, nothing extraordinary. Yet, for Lucien, it felt monumental. Strength, vitality, resistance to hunger—simple things that he had longed for silently. He stood, fists clenched, and tested his body further. Each movement was precise, fluid, and free of the pain that had always accompanied his every step.

As he explored the alley, he noticed subtle changes in his perception. The light seemed sharper, colors more vivid, and the distant noises—the scuttling rats, the creaking doors, the faint hum of the city—more distinct. He could sense the rhythm of the world in ways he hadn't before. The system had altered something fundamental.

"Reminder: Tomorrow, your second sign-in awaits. Choose wisely. Your lifestyle is your weapon."

Lucien's pulse quickened. Lifestyle is my weapon… the words echoed in his mind. He had always considered himself powerless, trapped by circumstance. But if the system rewarded effort, discipline, and choices, perhaps he could forge his life into something more than mere survival.

The hours passed slowly. Lucien wandered the streets, testing his newfound strength and abilities. He lifted discarded metal pipes with ease, climbed walls that would have been impossible yesterday, and even managed to outrun a scavenger dog that had snarled at him earlier. Each small success filled him with exhilaration and disbelief.

By midday, he had returned to his corner of the scrapyard, where he normally spent his mornings scavenging scraps for food. Today, however, the scraps seemed less menacing. His movements were more precise, his mind clearer, and the hunger that gnawed at his stomach no longer threatened to overwhelm him.

He sat against a rusted container, staring at the glowing device. "This… this is a gift. But why me?" he murmured. "I'm nobody. I… I'm not special."

Yet even as doubt crept in, the system's words resonated in his mind: Consistency is the path to transformation. The promise of growth through effort, however small, ignited a determination he had never felt before.

And for the first time, he allowed himself to imagine a future beyond the confines of the Ashen District—a future where he was strong, capable, and unafraid.

By evening, Lucien had set a small routine: wake at dawn, perform a simple task, sign in, and observe the effects. The first day had ended, but the fire inside him had only just begun to burn.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the city in a red-orange haze, Lucien whispered to the empty streets:

Tomorrow… I will sign in again. And the day after that. And the day after that. No matter what.

The Lifestyle Sign-In System had chosen him, but it was not the system alone that would shape his fate. It would be his choices, his discipline, his persistence. And with that realization, a faint smile curved across his face.

This is the beginning. The first sunrise of my life.

And somewhere, deep within the circuits of the system, a silent glow pulsed—a new journey had begun.
