Chapter 85 - The Ancient One

Now that things were clear, Peter decided to fight back.

When Kaecilius leapt forward again, whipping his leg down with a strike infused with dark energy, Peter didn't dodge away this time. He shifted slightly, reached out, and caught Kaecilius's leg.

Before Kaecilius could process what was happening, Peter slammed him hard into the ground.

Kaecilius's face met the earth before he even understood what had happened.

He was stunned.

Just a moment ago, the boy had been fleeing helplessly before him — and now, suddenly, he was fighting back? And with such strength! One hit had driven him straight into the floor.

Kaecilius was thrown completely off balance.

Peter, however, didn't plan to give him a chance to recover.

To him, Kaecilius's hesitation was a gift.

He raised his foot, ready to stomp hard enough to snap Kaecilius's spine.

This evil man was trying to summon Dormammu, the ruler of the Dark Dimension — a being who would invade and consume the real world, dooming billions of lives.

Peter had no intention of showing mercy to someone like that.

Crack!

A sharp sound rang out, like bones breaking — but Peter didn't feel the solid impact of flesh underfoot.

Instead, Kaecilius had conjured a red-and-black magical shield, infused with dark energy.

Peter's foot came down on the barrier instead, and the cracking noise had been the sound of the shield shattering.

Kaecilius was shocked. Peter's raw power had broken through his dark-augmented Crimson Bands of Cyttorak!

That spell — The Bands of Cyttorak — was fundamental magic to any sorcerer. It was both an opening incantation and a basic defense, able to block both physical and magical attacks to some degree.

There were two versions of it:The ordinary one, Bands of Cyttorak: Amber Version, which glowed orange-yellow.And the advanced form, Bands of Cyttorak: Crimson Version, whose red hue signified far stronger defense.

Kaecilius's version, reinforced by the Dark Dimension's power, was even more formidable — capable, he believed, of withstanding tens of tons of force.

Yet this oddly dressed young man had crushed it with a single stomp. If that foot had landed on his body instead…

Kaecilius drew a sharp breath. Terror surged through him. A wave of dark energy burst violently from his body.

Peter's spider-sense screamed danger. Without hesitation, he hurled Kaecilius away and leapt back himself.

A dense mist of dark power erupted from Kaecilius, swallowing the entire area — and then, that whole section of the mirror dimension simply vanished.

Kaecilius, flung into the air, opened a portal and disappeared.

In an instant, Peter was alone in the mirror dimension.

He looked around — left, right, up, down — but there was no sign of Strange, Mordo, or the other fanatical followers.

Then, a chilling realization hit him.

If this mirror dimension was truly as vast as the real world… then it was as large as Earth itself.

And without magic, how was he supposed to find a few constantly moving sorcerers in a world this big?

If he couldn't find them, how was he supposed to get out?Was he just going to starve to death in here?

Panic began to creep in.

He jumped and ran around for a while, searching everywhere, but there was no trace of anyone. In the end, he returned to where he'd started and sat down to wait.

All he could do now was hope Strange and Mordo would win — or, if not, at least be smart enough to retreat toward him for help.

Meanwhile, having escaped through a portal, Kaecilius finally realized something important.

Peter hadn't followed.

Thinking it through, Kaecilius understood why — the strangely dressed, super-strong man wasn't a sorcerer!Which meant he couldn't use portals, couldn't chase him at all.

A grin spread across Kaecilius's face.

Why had he bothered fighting Peter in the first place?Only to keep him out of the way!

And now, that goal was achieved.

Even if Peter was still alive, he could no longer interfere with Kaecilius's true purpose — killing Stephen Strange.

Kaecilius closed his eyes, focused on the magical currents, and soon sensed Strange's location. Then he opened a portal and stepped through.

Back in the mirror dimension, Peter sat idly on a rocky ledge, waiting for Strange or Mordo to remember him — or maybe come seek help.

But instead of them, someone else appeared.

A bald woman in sorcerer's robes stepped through a glowing portal. Her garments were of a style similar to Strange's.

"You're… the Ancient One? Strange and Mordo's teacher?" Peter asked in surprise, standing up.

The Ancient One widened her eyes slightly, gazing at Peter as if trying to discern something hidden deep within him.

Peter rubbed his face awkwardly, unsure what she was looking for.

After a long moment, the Ancient One exhaled softly and said,

"The power within you makes the future of this world uncertain. Whether that's a blessing or a curse… I cannot tell."

"What do you mean?" Peter asked, puzzled.

The Ancient One shook her head.

"You'll understand in time. For now, let me send you back."

Before Peter could respond, she raised her hand and struck the air lightly.

Crack!

The space behind Peter shattered like glass.

An overwhelming force struck him — so powerful he couldn't resist. He stumbled backward—

Beep—beep—

Suddenly, the familiar sounds of the city filled his ears.

He blinked and found himself standing on a bustling street, bright with life and noise. He had returned from the mirror dimension.

Peter scratched his head, completely baffled.

How had he gone in so suddenly… and come out just as suddenly? It felt like he hadn't even done anything!

Still, relief washed over him.

If the Ancient One — the so-called strongest sorcerer on Earth — had arrived, then Kaecilius's defeat was all but certain. Strange and Mordo should be safe.

With that thought, Peter decided to retrieve his laptop, which he'd hidden earlier in his car.

And just like that, his strange encounter with the world of magic ended as abruptly as it had begun — mysterious in its arrival, and just as mysterious in its departure.

He realized he was standing again before the familiar brownstone at 177A Bleecker Street.

With a helpless sigh, he followed the bus route he remembered, chasing it all the way toward Queens until he finally found the vehicle near its terminus — and his hidden laptop inside.

That evening, after dinner with Aunt May, Peter returned to his room.

A golden portal swirled open in the air, and Doctor Strange stepped out.
