Chapter 84 - The Power of Darkness

"Once, I believed only in mathematics and physics—until one day, a bald witch slapped my soul right out of my body. After that, I began to believe that magic was the truth of the universe. But then, a kid in a red and blue suit told me the most miraculous thing in existence was mathematics…and he actually used math to counter my magic."— From the diary of the mentally shattered second-rate mage, Stephen Strange.

Peter mimicked his earlier tactics—both hands in motion, firing web after web that stuck to every surface around them. But these webs, which seemed to be shot out at random, somehow all ended up wrapping around Kaecilius's fanatical followers in a mysterious, geometric pattern.

Soon, following in Kaecilius's footsteps, all of his underlings were also bound tight.

Every single villain was pinned down by webbing.

Doctor Strange and Mordo stopped their spells, looking from the immobilized cultists to Peter—both of them with a buzzing in their heads.

"How did you do that?" Strange couldn't help asking.

Peter replied eagerly,

"A point moving at a constant speed away from a fixed point while rotating around it at a constant angular velocity forms a trajectory known in geometry as an Archimedean spiral, or an equiangular spiral. So I just set each target as the fixed point, substituted it into the spatial coordinate system according to the Archimedean equation, and—"

"Stop!" Strange cut him off, raising a hand.

His head was spinning. He suddenly found himself doubting the very nature of magic.

After all, he'd only been a mage for a short time.Barely half a year ago, he had still been a brilliant neurosurgeon—a man of science. His surgical skill made him rich; he drove luxury cars, lived in a mansion, and indulged in every worldly pleasure.

Then came the car crash. His hands were ruined—nerves shattered, no longer able to hold a scalpel.

In despair, he sought out Kamar-Taj.

There, the Ancient One had slapped his soul right out of his body and sent his consciousness drifting across countless dimensions, completely shattering his previous worldview.

Over the next few months, she taught him to summon extradimensional energy, forge weapons and shields, project his astral form, and travel between dimensions.

Though he learned faster than most, his deep-rooted faith in physics and material reality held him back.

Finally, the Ancient One threw him onto the summit of Mount Everest.Only when faced with the brink of death did he completely destroy his old beliefs and accept that magic was the one true force of the world.

From then on, his magical progress skyrocketed.Math and physics? Forgotten—banished from his mind.

But now, after Peter's explanation...Damn it—dead memories attack!

Doctor Strange's mental state wavered.

Mordo slapped his shoulder to snap him out of it. As Strange's mentor, the last thing he wanted was to see him "lose his path."

He also shot Peter a subtle look, clearly meaning: Don't. Mention. Math. Again.

If Strange were already a seasoned sorcerer, it wouldn't matter—but he was barely past the apprentice stage.

To put it simply, mages could be roughly ranked as:Apprentice → Adept → Master → Sorcerer Supreme.

And Strange, though talented and quick to learn, was at best an adept in terms of mindset.

He just happened to wield a Supreme artifact—the Eye of Agamotto—which made him powerful enough to act as the guardian of the New York Sanctum.

Peter didn't really understand what was going on, but obediently shut his mouth.

Seeing Strange nearly doubt his own existence made Peter wonder if his words were secretly a kind of spell attack.

Strange took a deep breath, exhaling slowly, forcing himself to clear his thoughts. He stopped thinking about math and focused on Kaecilius and the cultists trapped in webbing.

"I'll contact the Ancient One," Mordo said. "She can deal with them."

"Good," Strange nodded, then looked at Peter. "Thank you, Spider-Man. Without you, I wouldn't have known what to do with him."

"Really?"

A sinister voice echoed through the air.

A massive wave of dark energy erupted from Kaecilius's body.

Peter's spider-sense flared instantly—he shoved Strange and Mordo out of the way and leapt high into the air.

BOOM!A black spear formed of pure darkness tore through where they'd been standing, the sound of shattering glass ringing through the mirror dimension.

"You know nothing of the power of darkness!" Kaecilius sneered, breaking free from the webs and landing on a floating shard of stone, his hands crackling with black energy.

His eyes locked on Peter.

That brief exchange earlier had taught him one thing—unless he eliminated this strangely dressed "clown," he'd never get to Strange.

"You two—handle Strange and Mordo!" he barked.

The cultists charged.

"Be careful of his dark magic!" Strange shouted to Peter before being forced away.

"Dark power, huh?" Peter crouched on a hovering rock opposite Kaecilius, hands on the ground between his feet, head tilted."But you were still caught by math, weren't you? Doesn't seem that powerful to me. So what exactly are you so proud of?"

"Hmph!"

Kaecilius's rage flared.Dark energy wrapped around his fists as he lunged at Peter.

At first, Peter was startled—but then, confused.

They'd talked up this "dark power" like it was unstoppable. So why wasn't his spider-sense reacting to Kaecilius's punch at all?

Was it some kind of delayed attack, like Hawkeye's special arrows?Or was Kaecilius really that strong?

Unable to tell, Peter decided to play it safe.

He leapt lightly aside—

—and with a crash, the stone where he'd been standing shattered.

But instead of breaking into chunks like normal rock, it fractured like glass, scattering like crystal shards.

It looked impressive. But Peter couldn't shake the feeling… something was off.

Not as scary as he'd expected.

Out of caution, he continued to observe, dodging and studying Kaecilius's attacks.

After a few more exchanges, Peter finally confirmed it:

This so-called master of dark power—Kaecilius wasn't nearly as strong as he thought.
