Strange looked a bit odd right now — his body was transparent!
A ghost?
A spirit?
Could it be that Strange was already—
Peter shrank back into the corner of his bed, clutching his blanket and trembling.
"Someone wants to see you… one last time," Strange said. His tone carried a rare heaviness, as if something terrible had happened.
Sensing the mood, Peter wisely held back his usual quips. He lowered the blanket and stopped fooling around.
"One last time"… clearly meant that person was dying.
Peter suddenly felt a pang of sadness.
He and Strange weren't exactly close — at best, they'd fought side by side once, little more than acquaintances with a bit of shared battlefield camaraderie.
Still, he hadn't expected that, at death's door, Strange would come to see him.
That was…that was really…so freaking weird!
In the middle of the night, doing something like this — seriously creepy.
Strange seemed to notice Peter's look and immediately realized what the kid was thinking. He sighed and said irritably, "It's not what you think. I'm not dead. This is a spell called Astral Projection. You can think of it as an out-of-body state — my soul is here, not my physical body."
"Oh, oh!" Peter let out a breath of relief. For a second there, he thought Strange had come back to haunt him.
Still, he was puzzled. Strange didn't exactly have that many wizard friends, and Peter definitely didn't know any of them.
Could it be Mordo? But he wasn't close with Mordo either.
Or was Mordo the one about to die?In Peter's imagination, Mordo's dark head turned ghostly pale, blue veins bulging across his face, floating under the moonlight as he hissed,"Peter~ Peter~~ I want your life~~~"
Terrifying!
Panicking, Peter blurted out, "It really wasn't me who ran away this afternoon! There was this bald sorceress who suddenly appeared and teleported me out! I couldn't get back into that mirror dimension, so I just—"
He wasn't sure if that bald woman had been Strange's teacher, the Ancient One, so he played it safe with "bald lady sorcerer."
Strange nodded. "It's fine. That was my teacher, the Ancient One. She's the one who sent you away — though I have no idea why she did it."
"Oh… then what do you need me for?" Peter asked curiously.
"In short — just come with me," Strange said.
"Alright," Peter sighed helplessly.
If the Sorcerer Supreme said so, what else could he do?
He was about to get up when Strange shook his head and stepped forward — placing his hand firmly on Peter's chest.
Peter's Spider-Sense didn't warn him of any danger, so his body didn't react.
The next moment—
The world went black, then instantly bright again.
Peter blinked — and saw himself sitting stiffly on the bed, still clutching the blanket halfway down, eyes wide open.
"Wait—there are two of me? No, hold on—I've gone out of body too!" Peter froze, then quickly realized what had happened.
Could wizards really attack like this? He'd actually been punched out of his own body?!
Guess Spider-Sense wasn't foolproof after all!
"Let's go," Strange said, waving a hand toward Peter's body.
Whoosh!Peter's body slid sideways across the bed — landing neatly on the other side.
Strange frowned, waved again.
Whoosh!Peter's body jerked once more, this time flopping onto the floor, still in his pajamas.
Strange: "…"Peter: "…"
"What are you doing?" Peter asked, baffled.
Strange muttered, exasperated, "What's wrong with your body? Does it have a mind of its own? I'm not doing anything — I just wanted it to lie down naturally. I don't want that Italian lady outside walking in and seeing you sitting upright like a corpse."
"Uh…"
That "Italian lady" was obviously Aunt May. And, to be fair, Strange wasn't wrong.
He was actually being quite thoughtful.
Sometimes Aunt May did come into his room — rarely, but still. If she walked in and saw him sitting stiff as a board, she'd probably freak out.
But his body…
Peter suddenly realized what was going on.
Spider-Sense!
Spider-Sense wasn't just about danger detection — it was a heightened instinct for survival.
Before, his Spider-Sense hadn't been fully awakened; unless he was completely focused, it sometimes failed.
But after merging with the other three Spider-Men across worlds — and after that strange power-up when he left the Earth-1610B universe — his Spider-Sense had become something far beyond "complete."
It had evolved!
Like earlier that afternoon, when he saw that looming darkness pressing toward the real world —according to what Strange and Mordo later explained, that "dark veil" was actually the Dark Dimension encroaching on reality, caused by Kaecilius and his followers' ritual.
But that event hadn't even happened yet — and it was happening in another universe!
Which meant… his Spider-Sense could now see into the future!
Not only that — it could even perceive threats from other dimensions!
None of the other Spider-Men he'd merged with — not even the blond one who'd mastered his powers — had achieved this level!
And now, Peter discovered yet another new trait of his Spider-Sense:
Autonomous Protection.
Even without his consciousness inside, his body automatically defended itself!
In fact, without his conscious interference, that self-protection might activate even more efficiently!
Normally, his mind analyzed the feedback from Spider-Sense to decide how to react — dodge, block, ignore, counterattack, whatever.
But now, with no consciousness present, his body was operating purely on instinct —dodging everything!
Of course, in that state, his defense was maxed out… but his offense was zero.
Still—if he could combine this "automatic defense" mode with conscious attack control…
Peter's eyes lit up.
"Let me try it myself," he said, floating toward his body.
Strange sighed, then gave him a gentle push.
Whoosh—
Peter's soul slipped neatly back into his body.
The sensation was strangely familiar — after all, he went through something like this every time he crossed universes.
He stood up, climbed back onto the bed, and waved at Strange. "Alright, hit me again."
Strange floated over, gave him another palm strike—
And Peter's soul popped right out again.
Without another word, Strange grabbed him and led him toward a glowing portal.
Peter, of course, didn't plan to just go along passively.
Even as Strange pulled him forward, Peter was already studying this new state carefully, eager to test what his Spider-Sense could really do.
