Chapter 20 - Nojiko's Decision

Nami knew exactly what would happen if she pushed this forward.

Her sister, Nojiko, was about to be pulled into Leo's world. And once she was aboard his ship, she wouldn't just be a passenger — she'd be part of his crew, his life, and his chaotic brand of freedom.

And maybe, just maybe, his target.

Nami's lips curled into a faint smirk. She knew Leo well enough now — the man could be insufferably cocky, sometimes even a little overbearing — but she also knew he treated his women better than anyone else could. He was protective, attentive, and he never let harm come to those under his wing.

Besides, Nami couldn't stomach the idea of leaving Nojiko behind, alone in Cocoyasi Village after all they'd endured. Together, they could look after each other on the Grand Line.

So, when she finally brought it up, Leo didn't hesitate. He simply turned to Nojiko with that infuriatingly confident grin and said:

"Join us."

Nojiko blinked, startled. Then Kaya and Makino chimed in, smiling softly, reassuring her that this was a good decision.

Nojiko's resistance crumbled. She still felt as though she was being herded into something beyond her control, but eventually she nodded. "Alright… I'll go."

Even so, she couldn't shake the unease twisting in her gut. Leo was charming — too charming. The fact that all three women seemed to be backing him up only made her more suspicious.

Was he really this good? Or were they all just under his spell?

That night, Cocoyasi Village was alive with light. Firecrackers snapped and boomed from one end of the village to the other, their smoke curling into the night sky. The air was full of laughter and music as the villagers gathered to celebrate Arlong's defeat.

Genzo himself stopped by Nami's house, practically glowing with pride as he invited them to the feast. "You're the hero tonight, Nami. You should be at the head of the table!"

But Nami shook her head. "Not tonight. You all go enjoy yourselves. This is your victory too."

Genzo left reluctantly, though he understood. Tonight wasn't about the villagers for Nami — it was about family.

Later, with the celebration still raging in the distance, Leo followed Nami and Nojiko up the familiar dirt path to Bell-mère's grave. The night air was cool and still, carrying the faint smell of orange blossoms from the grove nearby.

Leo stopped a few paces away, letting the sisters have their moment. He leaned against a tree, arms folded, watching quietly.

Nami and Nojiko knelt before the simple stone marker, fingers brushing across the engraved name.

"Bell-mère… Arlong's gone." Nami's voice broke as tears welled up. "He's gone, and the village is free. We did it."

Nojiko's hand found hers, and they both cried — not just tears of grief, but of relief. For a while they spoke softly, sharing every detail of the battle, every emotion they had bottled up for years. Then, slowly, the conversation shifted.

Leo noticed the change from where he stood. The sisters kept glancing back at him. Nami's cheeks flushed, her fists clenched in frustration, while Nojiko's eyes widened, her hand flying to her mouth in surprise.

Leo rubbed his chin. Are they talking about me? The idea made him grin.

After a long while, Nami rose to her feet and tugged Leo forward. Her eyes were red, but her smile was softer than he'd ever seen.

"Mother," she said, standing tall before the grave, "this is him. The man I chose. He's good to me. He's the one I'll follow."

Leo stepped up beside her, squeezing her hand. "You have my word," he said solemnly. "I'll protect them both. Nami, Nojiko — I won't let either of you get hurt."

Nojiko's throat tightened. The sincerity in his voice left her with no argument to make.

When the three of them left the graveyard, there was a quiet sense of peace between them.

Back at Nami's house, though, the mood shifted again. The room felt charged, almost suffocating. Nojiko sat with her head bowed, nervously twisting her fingers together, sneaking glances at Leo every few seconds.

Her heart thudded wildly. Was Nami serious about what she said earlier? About what might happen tonight? The thought sent heat rushing to her face.

Would she resist? Would she give in?

Across the room, Kaya and Makino exchanged amused looks. They curled up together on the couch, clearly enjoying the show.

Nami sat stiffly, struggling to decide how to start this conversation. She could deal with Leo being with other women — that much she had accepted — but this was different. This was her sister.

Leo broke the tension first with a lazy grin. "So," he said, "are you three coming to the Merry tonight, or am I coming here?"

"You're going there!" Nami blurted instantly, throwing up her hand as though volunteering for battle.

She couldn't risk Leo stumbling across the stash of treasure hidden under the house.

Makino and Kaya simply shrugged, unfazed.

Nojiko's face turned scarlet. She knew what Leo meant, what Nami's quick answer implied — and that it was about her.

Before she could think of a way to stall, Leo crossed the room and, with a flash of power, vanished — taking Nojiko with him.

Nami let out a breath of relief, secretly pleased she had managed to keep her treasure safe. Then Leo's voice echoed through the air, clear and commanding:

"Nami, dig up the money from the orange grove. We'll use it as the crew's funds. Kaya, Makino — make sure she does it."

Nami stomped her foot and yelled toward the sky. "Leo! That's my money!"

But he was already gone.

On the deck of the Going Merry, Nojiko stumbled as she reappeared, clutching her chest. Her heart still hadn't slowed from the shock.

"How—?!"

Before she could finish, Leo was already in front of her, smiling calmly. "You'll get used to that," he said. "But first — your training starts now."

And just like that, the lesson began.

Hours passed as Leo walked her through the fundamentals of navigation and basic combat techniques. His teaching was patient but relentless, pushing her to keep up until her muscles ached and her mind buzzed with new knowledge.

When the moon hung high and the village feast had gone quiet, Leo finally let her rest.

"Good work," he said gently. He guided her to the bed in the cabin, tucking the blanket around her shoulders. Nojiko's cheeks burned, but she was too exhausted to protest.

"Sleep. Tomorrow, we leave Cocoyasi."

For a moment, he lingered, watching her relax. Then he turned away and stepped into the next room.

"Claim." He barely spoke the word, already triggering the familiar hum of The Conquest System.
