Chapter 1 - The arrival

"Finally, the dresses I've been longing for," Isabella whispered to herself. "They're finally here!"

She quickly closed the door behind her and ran up to her room in seconds. She cut open the box and pulled every dress out, laying them carefully on her bed. One by one, she tried them on, relieved to find each fit perfectly. The colors suited her beautifully.

Isabella was a classy seventeen-year-old who had just celebrated her birthday a few days ago. She was an only child. Her mother worked as a surgeon at a hospital far from home, while her father was a wealthy politician in Nigeria. Recently, Isabella had been accepted into one of the best universities in London — Lifetime College. Though as an only child, she never felt lonely; her best friend Kathy lived with her. Kathy had been like a sister to her ever since childhood. Kathy lost her mother when she was young, and since then, Isabella's mom had taken her under her wing. While Kathy didn't officially live with them, she spent so much time at Isabella's house that they might as well have been family. The girls were inseparable, and despite Kathy being a year older, their bond was built on years of shared memories and support

"I really hope Kathy comes back soon..." Isabella mused aloud. "She's been gone for over three hours now. I guess she went to a party. Gosh, why is she so—"

Just then, her phone pinged loudly, startling her. "Speak of the devil."

She smiled and picked up her phone, scrolling through the texts.

Hey Bella, I'm on my way home—okay? Be a dear and get me some food, will you? I'm starving right now, thanks, sweetie <3

*me:*

Gee, get it yourself. I haven't prepared anything and I just got the dresses I ordered.

I'm trying them on; why don't you go out and get yourself a snack? 😏

*bestie ❤❤❤:*

You're so impossible. Fine, I'll just get something to eat myself >:(

She chuckled, knowing Kathy would unleash a storm of yelling the moment she got back.

Isabella continued trying on the dresses, checking for any tears or loose stitches, when suddenly there was a pounding knock on her door.

"Who is it?" Isabella shouted, turning toward the sound.

"Who just texted you?!" Kathy shouted back, louder this time.

"Huh," Isabella said, glancing one last time in the mirror before tossing her dress on the bed and running downstairs. "I'm coming!"

"Hurry up! I can't stand out here by myself—" Kathy's voice was cut off as the front door swung open. She walked in with a grumpy face, her little black dress stained with coffee.

"Hey, Kathy, you don't look so good," Isabella teased, knowing full well her friend was fuming.

Sometimes it was fun to annoy her even more.

"And while I look good, you know I don't joke around when I'm hungry. And you couldn't even prepare something for me!" Kathy fumed. "Darling, you're about to get into college—be a little more considerate, will you?"

Isabella laughed. Kathy still called her pet names like "darling" or "sweetie," even though she was only a year older. Surprisingly, it didn't bother Isabella in the slightest.

Kathy threw her purse onto the sofa and slumped down on the floor.

"Aww, sorry, K-Kate. But did you get something to eat?" Isabella asked sincerely, hiding her laughter as she walked into the kitchen.

Kathy sighed, holding her head in her hands. "It's fine, Bella. I got chicken and chips from the restaurant we went to the other day," she said, pointing to the takeout bag on the sofa.

Feeling a little guilty, Isabella smiled. "Alright, Kate. I'll get you some of your favorite apple juice." Kathy nodded, already stuffing her mouth with the food.

"You better give me one of your dresses too," Kathy joked, smiling.
