Chapter 16 - Meruem

Meruem's life began with the birth of a King.

The Chimera Ant Queen had consumed countless creatures before giving birth to him, gathering their traits and abilities within her body until the being inside her became something far beyond an ordinary Chimera Ant. From the moment Meruem was born, there was no question about his position. He possessed overwhelming physical strength, extraordinary intelligence, and an instinctive understanding of the world around him. Even the Royal Guards who had been created to serve him were insignificant compared to their King.

Meruem did not need to learn how to rule. He was born believing that he had the right to rule, and everything he witnessed seemed to confirm that belief. The creatures around him existed for a purpose. The weak existed to serve the strong, while the strong existed to govern those beneath them. To Meruem, this was not cruelty. It was simply the natural order of the world. Whenever someone failed to satisfy his expectations, he discarded them without hesitation. Soldiers were resources, humans were livestock, and even those who served directly beneath him were valuable only for what they could provide.

The Royal Guards were different only because of their exceptional abilities and absolute loyalty. Neferpitou, Shaiapouf, and Menthuthuyoupi were created to protect the King, and each possessed enough power to stand among the strongest beings of humanity. Yet even they understood that their lives ultimately belonged to Meruem.

The King intended to conquer the human world. Humanity had spent thousands of years building nations, governments, armies, and societies, but Meruem saw all of it as temporary. Human beings possessed numbers and technology, but those things meant little against a being like him. He believed that once the strongest human resistance had been crushed, the rest of the world would naturally fall into place. There was no hatred behind his ambition and barely even any emotion. Humanity simply stood beneath him.

As Meruem's forces expanded their control, however, he began encountering humans who did not behave according to the rules he believed governed the world. Some possessed almost no physical strength but displayed extraordinary courage, while others were weak yet capable of influencing events through intelligence, determination, or loyalty. Meruem noticed these things, but initially regarded them as abnormalities rather than evidence that his worldview might be incomplete.

Then he encountered a girl named Komugi.

She was blind, physically frail, and completely incapable of fighting. By every measurement Meruem understood, she should have been insignificant. Yet she possessed something he could not comprehend. She was the world's greatest Gungi player.

Meruem first encountered her because he was searching for humans who possessed exceptional abilities. He expected to defeat her easily. After all, what could a weak human possibly possess that could challenge the King? However, when they began playing Gungi, Meruem quickly discovered that Komugi was unlike anyone he had ever encountered. Despite her fragile body and complete lack of physical strength, she possessed an extraordinary understanding of the game.

Meruem played against her expecting to win, only to find himself defeated. He played again, convinced that he had simply underestimated her, but the result remained the same. He continued challenging her, studying every move and attempting to understand the strange ability that allowed this seemingly insignificant human to repeatedly overcome him. Yet no matter how many times they played, Komugi continued to defeat him.

For the first time in his life, Meruem encountered something that his understanding of strength could not explain.

He became obsessed.

He continued playing Gungi with Komugi, studying her movements and attempting to understand the source of her ability. At first, he simply wanted to defeat her. Gradually, however, something else began to change inside him.

He began to respect her.

Komugi did not fear him because she was unaware of his true nature. She did not worship him because he was powerful. She did not care about his position as King. She simply played Gungi with him.

For perhaps the first time, Meruem was being treated not as a King, a monster, or an absolute authority, but simply as another person sitting across the board.

That realization slowly began to change him.

The King who had once believed that strength determined the value of existence began encountering things that strength could not measure. Intelligence, dedication, loyalty, affection, sacrifice, and the strange determination of a human who possessed almost nothing began forcing him to reconsider the principles he had accepted since birth.

His relationship with Komugi became something even Meruem struggled to understand. He began protecting her. He began worrying about her. He began caring about what happened to her. The same being who had once regarded human lives as meaningless began placing the life of one human above his own ambitions.

Yet Meruem's transformation was not immediate.

He remained the King. He still possessed overwhelming power, and he still carried the instincts of the creature he had been born as. The invasion of the palace eventually brought him into conflict with humanity's strongest warriors, including Isaac Netero, the Chairman of the Hunter Association.

Netero represented something Meruem had never truly encountered before: humanity's determination.

Unlike the countless humans Meruem had dismissed, Netero possessed the strength, experience, and will to stand before the King without surrendering. Their battle became a clash between two beings who had reached the peak of their respective paths.

Meruem ultimately defeated Netero.

But victory did not bring him the satisfaction he once expected. Instead, he discovered something far more disturbing. Humanity had created a weapon that did not need to defeat him through strength.

The Poor Man's Rose had been implanted within Netero's body, and after Meruem defeated him, the weapon detonated. The explosion nearly killed the King, leaving his body poisoned by the weapon's lingering effects.

For the first time, Meruem understood that humanity was not simply a collection of weak creatures waiting to be conquered. Humanity possessed something he had failed to understand: desperation. They possessed the ability to sacrifice everything simply to ensure that something else survived.

Even the King could not completely comprehend where such determination came from.

Meruem survived the explosion for a time, restored by the sacrifice of his Royal Guards. Yet his body had already been poisoned beyond recovery. When he finally returned to consciousness, he did not search for revenge. He searched for Komugi.

He wanted to see her again.

The King who had once dreamed of conquering humanity no longer cared about ruling the world. He no longer cared about proving that he was the strongest creature alive. He simply wanted to spend his remaining time with the one person who had changed him.

Meruem eventually found Komugi. His body was dying, and both of them understood that their time together was limited. Yet neither of them tried to deny what was happening. They simply sat together and played Gungi.

The King who had once believed that everything existed beneath him had finally discovered something he considered more valuable than power. Komugi was not his servant, not his subject, and not an opponent he needed to defeat. She was simply a person whose existence had become precious to him.

Komugi remained beside him until the very end.

Meruem's final moments were spent playing Gungi with her, listening to her voice, and accepting the end of his life. He had been born believing that strength gave him the right to rule the world, but he died having discovered that there were things far more important than ruling it.

The King of the Chimera Ants had conquered almost nothing. Yet in the short time he had lived, Meruem had accomplished something far more difficult.

He had changed himself.
