For the first time since Madara's story had ended, Aizen did not immediately offer his judgment.
He remained seated with his usual peaceful smile, one hand resting lightly against the arm of his chair. His expression had not changed throughout the entire discussion, but his eyes had become noticeably more attentive. The others had focused on Madara's ideals, his ambition, his failure to achieve peace, and the price he had been willing to pay for his dream.
Aizen had been listening to something else. The story had contained a detail that bothered him.
Black Zetsu.
Madara had described the being as the manifestation of his will, something he had created and left behind to guide his plan while he waited for the right moment to return. It was a convenient explanation but he had a feeling things were not as simple.
Aizen finally looked toward Madara.
"There is something I would like to ask you before I give my judgment."
Madara turned his eyes toward him. "What is it?"
"Black Zetsu."
The name immediately drew Madara's attention.
Aizen's smile remained unchanged. "You described him as the manifestation of your will. Did you consciously create Black Zetsu?"
Madara's brows lowered slightly.
"No."
Aizen's smile became slightly more pronounced.
"Then let me ask the question differently. Did you possess a technique, ability, or method capable of creating an independent being that could act according to your will?"
Madara thought for a moment before answering.
"No. Not in the manner you are suggesting."
Aizen nodded slowly.
"That is interesting."
Madara's expression hardened. "What exactly are you implying?"
Aizen's voice remained calm, almost conversational. "I am simply following the information you provided. You had a plan that required someone to continue your work after your death. You created or encountered a being that claimed to represent your will. You trusted that being to manipulate Obito, guide the events necessary for your resurrection, and preserve your plan for decades."
"And yet you did not create him."
Madara's eyes narrowed.
Aizen continued before he could respond.
"That means Black Zetsu existed independently of you."
The room became quieter.
Frieza looked mildly annoyed by the sudden change in subject. Doflamingo, however, had already begun smiling. Meruem remained silent, listening carefully.
Madara's voice became colder.
"He was born from my will."
"That is what you were led to believe."
Aizen's answer came so naturally that Madara's eyes sharpened immediately.
Aizen leaned back slightly. He looked at Madara for several seconds before continuing.
"I have spent a considerable portion of my life manipulating people. I understand what it means to create a false explanation for someone's existence, to give them a purpose they believe to be their own, and to place a useful agent inside another person's plan without that person realizing it."
Madara remained silent.
Aizen's smile did not disappear.
"If I wanted to manipulate you, Madara, I would not necessarily tell you that I was manipulating you. I would give you an explanation that fit your existing beliefs so perfectly that you would never feel the need to question it."
Madara's expression became increasingly severe.
"You think Zetsu deceived me."
"I think it is possible."
Aizen's answer was deliberately measured.
"I am not claiming that I know the truth. I have not met Black Zetsu. I have not examined his abilities. I know only what your memories have shown us."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"But from what I have seen, there is something peculiar about him. He appeared at the end of your plan. He claimed to be an extension of your will. He possessed knowledge necessary to guide your successor. He remained hidden while events unfolded according to the plan you believed you had created. Most importantly, he had a reason to ensure that you believed he belonged to you."
Aizen's voice remained gentle.
"That is an excellent position for a manipulator."
Doflamingo's grin widened.
He understood exactly what Aizen was getting at.
Madara had always believed himself to be the one manipulating the board. He had manipulated Obito, manipulated the Uchiha legacy, manipulated the future of the shinobi world, and prepared events decades in advance.
But what if someone had placed a piece on his board before he even realized another player existed?
Aizen turned toward Madara again.
"Did Black Zetsu ever tell you where he came from?"
Madara paused.
"No."
"Did you investigate?"
"No."
"Did you ever consider that his existence might have had a purpose unrelated to your own?"
Madara's expression darkened.
"I believed he was created from my will."
"Exactly."
Aizen smiled.
"You believed it."
For the first time, Madara's composure visibly shifted.
Aizen had not accused him of being foolish. That would have been too simple. Instead, he had pointed toward something far more dangerous.
The possibility that Madara had spent decades believing himself to be the mastermind while another intelligence had been quietly using his ambition for its own purpose.
Aizen understood that kind of deception intimately.
He had manipulated entire institutions while remaining trusted by the people inside them. He knew how easily an intelligent person could become blind to manipulation when the deception reinforced what they already wanted to believe.
Madara's greatest vulnerability had not been his lack of intelligence.
It had been his certainty.
He had believed so completely in his own interpretation of the world that anyone who presented themselves as an extension of that interpretation could move beside him without immediately appearing suspicious.
Aizen finally turned away from Madara.
"That is all I wished to ask."
Madara stared at him.
"You are suggesting that I was manipulated by my own subordinate."
"No."
Aizen's smile remained peaceful.
"I am suggesting something much more interesting. You may never have had a subordinate at all."
The words settled heavily over the table.
Doflamingo's smile became almost predatory. Frieza looked between them with growing interest, while Meruem remained completely silent.
Madara's mind immediately began searching through everything he knew about Black Zetsu.
For decades, Madara had regarded Black Zetsu as the embodiment of his own will. He had never needed to question the existence of something that supposedly came from himself.
But now that Aizen had forced the question into his mind, a disturbing possibility appeared.
What if Black Zetsu had never been his will?
What if Black Zetsu had only wanted him to believe that?
Madara's expression remained controlled, but Aizen noticed the smallest change in his eyes.
