Chapter 17 - Judgement

The memories slowly faded from the minds of the four Kings, and the conference hall once again fell into silence. Meruem's entire existence had just passed through their minds, from the moment he was born as the King of the Chimera Ants to the final moments he spent beside Komugi. Unlike Doflamingo's life, which had been filled with ambition, betrayal, and an endless struggle to reclaim a throne, Meruem's story had followed a very different path. He had been born at the top, discovered the meaninglessness of the position he had once considered everything, and ultimately found peace in the presence of a single human.

For several moments, none of the Kings spoke.

Frieza eventually broke the silence with a dissatisfied expression.

"What a boring show. I actually something interesting from you, ant."

Meruem looked toward him calmly, showing no reaction to the insult.

"So much potential. So many weak and useful subjects and you left everything behind for a mere disabled human."

Freeza's face was filled with disdain and scorn as of breathing the same air as Meruem was an insult to him but Meruem said nothing. Instead his eyes as he looked at Freeza were filled with pity.

Doflamingo, however, had been unusually quiet.

His grin remained on his face, but his eyes were no longer carrying the same amusement they had during his own judgment. He rested one arm against the chair and stared at Meruem for several moments before finally speaking.

"Fuffuffuffu... What a strange life."

His laughter was quieter than usual.

"You really were born as a King, weren't you?"

Doflamingo's eyes remained fixed on Meruem.

"You never had to fight for the throne. You never had to crawl through the dirt, gather people around yourself, manipulate the underworld, or destroy anyone who stood between you and the position you wanted. You simply opened your eyes one day, and the entire world was already beneath you."

His grin widened slightly.

"And then you gave it all up."

Doflamingo laughed again, but there was something different behind it this time.

"Fuffuffuffu... I don't understand."

He leaned back slightly and looked toward the ceiling, his expression becoming strangely contemplative.

"I spent my entire life chasing something like that. I was born in Heaven, thrown into Hell, and spent years clawing my way back toward the top. Everything I did, everything I built, every person I used and every enemy I destroyed eventually brought me closer to that position again."

His eyes slowly returned to Meruem.

"And you had it from the beginning."

For a brief moment, Doflamingo's grin became thinner.

"Then you found one person and decided the throne wasn't important anymore."

There was no mockery in his voice now. If anything, there was a strange trace of envy.

"I wonder what that feels like."

The question escaped him almost unconsciously.

Doflamingo had spent years surrounded by people. He had subordinates who were willing to die for him, allies who depended upon him, enemies who feared him, and countless connections throughout the underworld. Yet none of those relationships had ever made him feel the kind of peace that Meruem had found with Komugi.

He had always wanted something more.

More power. More influence. More control. Another kingdom. Another connection. Another person who could be useful to him.

Meruem had eventually stopped searching.

"Perhaps that is the part I envy."

His grin returned to its usual shape. He let out a quiet laugh as though he found the thought amusing.

"Fuffuffuffu... What an irritating bastard you are, Ant King."

Madara had remained silent throughout Doflamingo's reflection. His expression was calm, but his eyes had become noticeably more serious as he continued thinking about Meruem's life.

Madara finally spoke, his voice was noticeably softer than before.

"You were born with an absolute belief in strength. The strong ruled, the weak served, and the position of every creature was determined by what it possessed. You believed that was the natural order of the world."

He paused briefly.

"Then you encountered something that contradicted that belief."

Madara's gaze lowered slightly.

"And instead of destroying it, you changed yourself."

The words seemed to carry more significance to him than he intended.

"I have spent much of my life believing that the world itself needed to change. I looked at the endless conflict between people and came to the conclusion that humanity would continue repeating the same cycle unless someone possessed enough power to break it."

His eyes hardened as memories of his own past surfaced in his mind.

"I pursued greater power because I believed that only someone standing above the conflict could impose an answer upon it. Even when I found someone who shared my desire for peace, our understanding of how that peace could be achieved was fundamentally different."

Madara's thoughts briefly returned to Hashirama.

"Perhaps that is what makes your story so strange."

He looked toward Meruem again. Madara remained silent for several seconds before continuing.

"I cannot say that I would have made the same choice."

There was no shame in the statement. It was simply an acknowledgment.

"A King possesses power, but he also possesses responsibility. You were willing to abandon your position because you discovered something that gave your own life greater meaning. Perhaps that was the correct choice for you, but I cannot accept that the same answer would be enough for someone responsible for an entire world."

His expression became slightly more distant.

"Still..."

Madara's voice lowered.

"You achieved something that many people spend their entire lives seeking."

He looked at Meruem with a complicated expression.

"Peace."

For a moment, Madara said nothing more. His eyes drifted in his memory.

'After Tsuki no Me is complete, will I also achieve this level of peace?'

Perhaps that was what troubled him most.

He had spent decades searching for a way to create a world without suffering. Meruem had spent only a fraction of that time before discovering a form of peace that did not require conquering the world, controlling humanity, or forcing everyone into a single dream.

Aizen had been unusually quiet throughout the entire conversation.

His peaceful smile remained exactly where it had been since the beginning of the conference, and to anyone watching him, there appeared to be almost no difference in his expression. Yet he had listened to every word spoken about Meruem with unusual attention.

When he finally spoke, his voice was as calm as ever.

"You are quite an extraordinary creature, Meruem."

Meruem turned toward him.

Aizen's eyes remained fixed upon the Ant King.

"I have always found the idea of someone standing above the world rather interesting. The existence of a throne implies that there is someone sitting upon it, while everyone else remains beneath them. Naturally, one begins to wonder whether the person sitting upon that throne truly deserves to be there."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"And eventually, one begins to wonder whether the throne itself should belong to someone else."

Doflamingo glanced toward him, but Aizen continued without acknowledging the reaction.

"Your life presents an unusual answer to that question. You did not overthrow the person sitting above you. You did not climb toward a higher throne. You simply discovered that the throne was not worth possessing."

For the first time since the conference began, Aizen's smile became slightly more subdued.

"I wonder..."

His voice remained calm, but the words carried a different weight.

"If you had never met Komugi, would you have discovered that?"

Meruem did not answer.

Aizen continued looking at him.

"Perhaps that is the most interesting part of your life. You did not reach your conclusion through philosophy or some grand realization about the nature of existence. You encountered one person who forced you to experience something your previous worldview could not explain, and through that experience, you changed."

Aizen's fingers rested lightly against the arm of his chair.

"You found something outside yourself that made your previous ambitions seem insignificant."

For a brief moment, his eyes became distant.

"That is a rather dangerous idea."

The other Kings remained silent.

Aizen's smile returned to its usual form.

"After all, if someone can reach the summit and discover that the summit itself has no meaning, then one must eventually ask what exactly he intends to do after reaching it."

Aizen looked toward Meruem with the same polite smile he had worn from the beginning, but something had changed behind it. Meruem's life had not convinced him that his own ambitions were meaningless. It had not changed his desire to rise above the system he despised, nor had it made him suddenly admire the path Meruem had chosen.

But for the first time, Meruem had presented him with a question that could not be dismissed simply because it was inconvenient.

What if the summit was not the answer?

The thought remained buried beneath Aizen's calm expression.

Doflamingo was still smiling, although his thoughts remained fixed on the strange envy he had felt while listening to Meruem's story. Madara had fallen into his own contemplation, considering a form of peace that did not require the solution he had pursued for so long. Frieza simply looked bored and unimpressed, apparently unable to understand why the others were making the matter more complicated than it needed to be.

Meruem, meanwhile, remained silent.

He had not expected the story of his life to affect the others in such different ways. Each of them had looked at the same memories and found something different within them, yet perhaps that was exactly what the conference had been designed for.

The Kings were not merely judging Meruem.

In their own ways, they were judging themselves.
