Chapter 6: The Unyielding Fortress

The first wave of Crackstone's followers was a snarling, chanting mass, a tide of fanatical hatred that washed over the forest clearing. They came with torches and old-world weapons, their eyes burning with a righteous fury. They were predictable. And predictability was Wednesday's specialty.

Alex watched the battle unfold on his holographic screen, a high-tech console that showed the battlefield in grim, real-time detail. He saw them coming, a mass of red dots on the map, and he saw the white lines of the traps Wednesday had laid. A grim smile touched his lips.

The first follower stepped on a tripwire. The ground gave way, and he fell into a pit, landing on a bed of sharpened stakes. The screams were cut short. The rest of the wave, however, just kept coming, oblivious to the danger. More red dots fell into more pits. The screen was a grim, silent slaughter.

[Novia System: Threat neutralized. Golem deployment: 4 units, at 50% capacity.]

The golems, four silent, imposing figures of metal and stone, stood guard at the perimeter of the clearing, their glowing eyes a silent threat. But they weren't even needed. Wednesday's traps were doing all the work.

She's a tactical genius. Who knew? he thought, a strange sense of pride in his voice. She's not just an artist. She's a killer. A beautiful, morbid killer.

Wednesday, watching from her vantage point on a rock, turned to him, her dark eyes gleaming. "It's simple. Predict their weakness and exploit it. They're predictably stupid."

He had to admit, she had a point. The dark, brooding forest outside Novia was a perfect backdrop for the gothic traps and the violent clash. The dark nature of the conflict was mirrored in the very setting.

A system message, a brief, unassuming flicker in the corner of his eye, caught his attention.

[Novia System: Anomaly detected: faint residual energy. Source: Unknown.]

It was a new type of energy, different from the portal or cosmic signatures he had seen before. It was like a lingering scent, a sign that something, or someone, had been here before the followers. Another puzzle. Another problem. But he had no time for that. Not now. Not when he had a battle to fight.

He turned his attention back to the holographic screen. The first wave was gone. But he knew, with a terrible certainty, that this wasn't over. Not by a long shot. The red dots were already regrouping, and they were getting closer.

The second wave was a more organized assault, a deliberate, angry rush. But they were met with a new kind of defense. Divina and Enid stood side by side, a terrifying and beautiful duo.

"Hold the line, Enid!" Divina yelled, her voice cutting through the ringing sound of her sonic barrier.

Divina's power was a masterpiece of control. A subtle, almost invisible sound wave that disoriented the followers, making them stumble and fall. It was like a phantom wall they couldn't see but could feel, a ringing in their ears that left them confused and vulnerable.

"I'm trying!" Enid shouted, her voice filled with a new, raw power. She felt a surge of energy, a primal howl building in her chest, and she let it out, a long, guttural roar that wasn't a cry of fear, but of strength. Her nails extended, hardening into terrifying claws, and her fangs sharpened, glinting in the pale moonlight. This was a partial transformation, her first. It was a raw, uncontrolled burst of power, but it was a beginning. It was a declaration. She was not a victim. She was a defender.

[Novia System: Power Stability Boost: Wednesday's Visions at 100% stable. Ally Progression: Enid Sinclair—Partial Transformation Unlocked.]

Alex felt a wave of warmth so intense it almost made him dizzy. He looked at the System message, and a smile, a real, genuine smile, broke across his face. "She did it," he whispered to himself. "She really did it." The emotional boost from Enid's bravery was all the power he needed. It was a powerful, undeniable proof of the System's core mechanic: his power was tied to his citizens' emotional state.

After the battle, Enid looked at her claws, horrified. "Ew, gross! They're... so sharp. I look like I've been giving myself a manicure with a lawnmower!" The moment of levity, the absurdity of her words, was a welcome relief from the grim reality of the battle. It was a reminder that they were still just kids, with mundane problems, even in the middle of a war.

The followers, disoriented and defeated, retreated back into the forest, leaving Novia victorious. Alex looked at the two girls, a deep sense of gratitude and respect filling him. They were more than just citizens. They were a team.
