Chapter 7: The Unsettled Calm
The victory was a fragile thing, a temporary peace that settled over Novia like a fine dust. The main hall was now pristine, free of any battle debris, but the spotless surface was a jarring contrast to Wednesday's agitated and suspicious mood. She paced the length of the hall, her dark braids swinging with a furious rhythm, her mind a whirlwind of speculation.
"It's a trap, you imbecile," Wednesday said, her voice flat and cold, a note of pure, unadulterated contempt. "This defeat was far too… theatrical. They're trying to lull us into a false sense of security."
Alex, who was trying to clean some hypothetical dust from a console, felt a familiar wave of exasperation. She was right, of course, but his Systems were telling him they were in the clear.
[Novia System: Threat assessment: 100% neutralized. No further threats detected.]
She's right to be suspicious. She's Wednesday Addams. She's a professional conspiracy theorist. The system might be telling me one thing, but her instincts are screaming another. And her instincts are probably more reliable than a glitchy AI.
"The System says we're in the clear," Alex said, trying to sound confident. "We should just relax."
Wednesday gave him a look that could curdle milk. "Relax? Relax is for the intellectually weak. They retreated. They didn't fall. They're regrouping. They'll be back, and they'll be smarter."
She turned and walked away, a new, intense look in her eye. "I'll handle this myself," she muttered. And with that, she was gone, leaving Alex to wonder what new, morbid investigation she was about to embark on.
He found Enid looking in a mirror, her hands shaking as she tried to retract her claws. They were a riot of color, but they were long and sharp, a terrifying contrast to her usual bubbly demeanor.
"I'm a monster, Alex," Enid whispered, her voice raw and broken. "I can't control it. What if I hurt someone?"
He sat with her, his voice soft and gentle. "You're not a monster, Enid. You're a hero. We'll find a way to help you. I promise."
He opened his System interface, a new mission forming in his mind. He had to find a way to help her control her power. He needed a cure, a way to stabilize her. He began to search, but the System's glitchy, humorous misclassification of her condition made the search difficult.
[Novia System: Searching for 'Furry Menace' cure... No results. Suggesting 'Canine Calming Charm'.]
Alex sighed, a frustrated exhale. Okay, System, stop with the nicknames. And a calming charm? Really? I'm looking for a solution, not a magical trinket. I'm starting to think you were designed by a very bored, and very snarky, programmer.
He looked up, and saw a new message appear in the corner of his eye.
[Novia System: Ally Wednesday Addams currently identified as 'Suspicious Goth'.]
Alex had to stifle a laugh. The name was so on the nose, so perfectly Wednesday. He looked over at her, still pacing the hall, and it made it even harder to contain his amusement. She was a beautiful mess of a person, and the System, for all its flaws, had managed to capture her perfectly.
A new function appeared on his HUD, "Emotional Metrics," which allowed him to track the morale of his citizens. He saw Enid's morale spike as he talked to her, and Wednesday's plummet as she became more suspicious. The System was a cold, objective accountant of emotion, and the data was telling him a story.
