The Code of Shadows
Chapter 2 – Marked
The sky was broken.
Dozens of glowing eyes stared down from the crack above. Some red. Some silver. Some black as night. Each one moved on its own, watching, searching.
Kairo froze. His heart raced. What are they?
The white-haired girl on the rooftop didn't look scared. She looked… amused.
"They've noticed you already," she said. "You're lucky. Most people get erased the moment they awaken."
"Erased?" Kairo whispered.
The hooded man growled, gripping the air. Another fire blade appeared in his hand. "Why waste time? Let me cut him now before the others arrive."
The girl shook her head. "No. His Fragment is Rewrite. You know what that means."
The man's red eye flickered. He lowered the blade, but his glare burned into Kairo.
Kairo stepped back. "Who are you people? What's happening to me?!"
The girl tilted her head. "You already know the answer. The world is breaking. And you… are one of us now."
Her body flickered—gone one second, right in front of him the next. Her golden eyes glowed as she leaned close.
"My name is Lyra. And from now on, your life isn't yours anymore."
Before Kairo could react, the ground shook.
The eyes in the sky moved. Fast. They swarmed like shadows, shooting down from the crack.
The hooded man cursed. "Too late. They're here."
From the darkness of the street, figures began to crawl out of the cracks in the air. Their bodies were wrong—shaped like humans, but stretched, broken, and flickering like static. Their eyes glowed the same colors as the ones in the sky.
Kairo stumbled back. "What are they?!"
Lyra's voice was calm, too calm. "Clones. Shadows born from the Fracture. If they touch you, you're erased."
One of the creatures lunged. Its arm bent backward, claws stretching.
Kairo shouted, "Stay away!"
The shard pulsed. The creature froze mid-air, then shattered into pieces of light.
The hooded man stared. "He can erase them already…?!"
Lyra smirked. "Interesting. Very interesting."
But more creatures poured in, crawling on the walls, dropping from the sky. Dozens. Maybe hundreds.
Kairo's body shook. His power had worked once, but he didn't even understand how.
"Fight," Lyra said. "Or die here."
The hooded man's blade ignited. "Don't waste energy talking. We cut through."
He charged forward, fire slicing through the clones. Lyra vanished and reappeared behind one, snapping its neck before fading again.
Kairo stood frozen. Fear clawed at him. But when one of the clones came close, his instincts screamed. He raised his hand again.
"Stop!"
The shard flared. The clone's body glitched, breaking into lines of code before exploding into light.
Kairo gasped for air. His vision blurred. His chest ached. Every time he used this… it felt like something inside him cracked too.
Lyra reappeared beside him, calm even in the chaos. "Good. But remember this—" She leaned close, whispering in his ear. "Every Rewrite has a price. And you'll learn yours soon."
Suddenly, the crack in the sky split wider. A new presence emerged—different from the clones. Heavy. Cold.
A tall shadow stepped out, cloaked in black. Its left eye glowed pitch black, deeper than night. The air itself grew heavy.
The hooded man stopped fighting. His fire dimmed. "No… it can't be."
Lyra's smile faded. For the first time, her voice shook. "A Prime Clone…"
The shadow's voice rumbled through the broken sky.
> "The Rewrite must be destroyed."
The air bent around it. The clones stopped moving, bowing their heads like soldiers before a king.
Kairo's knees weakened. His shard pulsed violently in fear—or maybe warning.
The Prime Clone raised its hand. The city lights around them shattered, plunging everything into darkness.
And in that moment, Kairo felt it.
A second voice inside his head. Not the shard. Not his own. Something else.
> If you want to live… use me.
