Chapter 6 – The Broken Friend

The subway shook as the shadow-creatures charged. Their bodies stretched like smoke but hit with the weight of stone. Mira moved first, slashing her dagger through the nearest one. It dissolved into black mist, but two more replaced it instantly.

"Kairo, focus!" Mira yelled, blocking another strike.

Kairo's chest burned with the white flame. His hand lit up, forming a glowing blade of light. He swung, cutting through three shadows at once. The tunnel lit up like lightning.

But Aiden just stood there. Watching. Smiling.

"Still holding back, Kairo? Pathetic." His red eyes burned. "You always feared your own strength."

Kairo's teeth clenched. "Stop pretending you know me. The Aiden I knew wouldn't betray everything."

Aiden stepped forward. The air bent around him, heavy with power. He raised his hand, and a massive red circle of symbols formed on the ceiling.

Mira's eyes widened. "He's summoning something!"

The floor cracked. From the darkness below, a giant arm of shadow clawed its way up. It was like the tunnel itself had come alive.

Kairo's heart pounded. "No… he's fusing with the fracture."

Aiden's voice grew deeper, layered with something inhuman. "I accepted the truth. The world must be broken completely before it can be rebuilt. And I will be the one to do it."

The giant shadow-arm slammed down. Kairo grabbed Mira and rolled aside as the tunnel exploded into dust and rubble.

"Run!" Mira shouted.

But Kairo didn't move. He stepped forward instead, fire blazing around him. His light sword burned brighter, almost painful to hold.

"Aiden… I won't run from you."

Their eyes locked. Red flame against white flame.

Aiden's smile turned cruel. "Good. Then die here."

They clashed.

White light and red fire smashed together, shaking the entire subway. Sparks of energy ripped through the walls. Shadows screamed and vanished. Mira could barely stand from the force of their strikes.

Kairo swung again and again, but Aiden blocked every attack with his red-burning blade. Each hit sent shockwaves through the ground.

Then Aiden whispered something. Just one sentence.

"Kairo… it wasn't me who betrayed you first. It was you."

Kairo froze for a second. His blade faltered.

"What are you talking about?"

Aiden's eyes glowed brighter. "Think back. The night of the first fracture. Who left me behind?"

Memories stabbed Kairo's mind—fire, screams, collapsing streets, reaching for Aiden's hand in the chaos… but not grabbing it.

His chest tightened. "No… I tried to—"

But Aiden's strike came faster than thought. His blade cut across Kairo's shoulder, white flame scattering like broken glass.

Kairo staggered back, blood dripping.

"Liar," Aiden said coldly. "You left me to die. And the shadows saved me."

Mira shouted, "Don't listen to him! He's twisting the truth!"

But deep down, Kairo wasn't sure anymore. The memory was too sharp. Too real.

For the first time, his flame flickered.

And Aiden's grew stronger.
