Chapter 2 - Unwelcomed

The morning light streamed through the windows as if it was a cruel joke. For a moment I forgot where I was until I opened the bathroom there.

There he stood, his broad shoulders blocking the mirror view, his golden eyes locked on me like I was an insect he was deciding whether to ignore or crush.

He spoke, his voice dripping with cold authority. "Pack your stuff and leave my property when you're done."

Before I could answer, he pushed past me and left the room.

"Rude..." I muttered under my breath, as I stepped into the shower, turning it on, but it couldn't take away the sting of his words.

When I stepped back into the room, a girl was standing there smiling warmly. "Hi, I'm Maya."

"Please go out, I need privacy," I said a little too sharply, but I couldn't help it.

She blinked, nodded, and slipped out. When I finished dressing properly, she re-entered and sat on the bed, patting beside her, gesturing me to sit.

As I sat, she asked my name. "I'm Merida." I offered reluctantly.

She tilted her head, testing my name on her tongue. "Merida! Wow, that's a very nice name."

"Yeah, thanks... anyways, I'll be leaving soon..." I said, frowning slightly.

She giggled and said, "He told you to leave, didn't he?"

"Yeah. He made it pretty clear."

She giggled. "Oh, Xavier can be an ass sometimes, but don't worry, I'll talk with him."

Something about her calmness made me calm down.

"Anyways... but you could go back to your pack, right? You have family members you could go stay with, right? Where are you from?..."

The question was like pressing an open wound.

I fidgeted with my fingers, feeling uncomfortable talking about it. "Well... I come from the Moon Crystal Rose pack, but it got ambushed. They killed everyone, and I managed to escape."

"But about my family members... I don't know what happened to them."

Tears welled up as I struggled to hold it back, painful memories piercing my head. She rubbed my back comfortingly.

She whispered, "Oh Merida, I'm so sorry... but I'll talk to my brother. Maybe you can stay here for a couple of months until you find your own place, ok?"

I wiped my face, thanking her, because she was nothing like her 'evil' brother. She got up and walked out.

I threw myself on the bed, letting out a sigh as my eyes drifted to the bracelet on the table.

I picked it up, brushing my fingers on the embroidered names.

Who was it for? I put it on my wrist, and it fitted perfectly.

My mind drifted back to Xavier's cold dismissal, feeling something strange in my heart. Every clipped word, every cold word burned in my mind.

I wandered down the hall until the scent of fresh bread led me to the kitchen, a cluster of maids bustled about.

When they noticed me, conversations stilled. They fawned over my beauty, giggling and whispering.

One of them said, "No wonder the alpha hasn't taken a mate yet, maybe he has his eyes on you."

It made the others giggle, and I laughed awkwardly, excusing myself.

Halfway back to my room, I passed by a half-opened door. The sound hit me first—soft, breathless gasps. Then a low, masculine growl I instantly recognized.

Curiosity pushed me to peek through the crack.

I froze.

Xavier's body was pressed against a she-wolf, his hands gripping her hips as their mouths clashed in hungry, unrestrained kisses.

His shirt was off, and my lips went dry. His abs were toned, defined. His abs looked hard like steel, almost like he gymed with trees.

My breath caught. He looked up.

Those golden eyes found mine.

I bolted.

My heart pounding as I dashed away towards my room like air, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the walls.

What I'd seen, it wasn't meant for me—yet I couldn't shake the image from my eyes.
